A Great Oven

This is our second Breville Smart Oven. We repalced one after 8 years of steady, hard use when the screen finally went dark, the buttons were finicky, but it still worked. The new one is just as good and better! We love the convection feature, the ease of use and, needless to say, the reliability of the oven. We kept the grill and broiler tray from the old oven to use in the new one as a double decker for two items to cook at the same time. Tried it a few times with flat vegs on the bottom grill and meat roasting in the middle and it worked perfectly. It makes -Great toast,Perfect Pizza, andThis oven replaces our large oven 90% of the time (two person family) and does it better !Stop looking, this is the oven you want.

We purchased this item in 2012 so the review is based on nine years of use. In short this is a great product and the most frequently used appliance in the kitchen. Shortly after the one-year mark it had a major electronic failure - no lights or function from the control panel. When I contacted Breville and described the problem they offered to send out a new oven in exchange even though the warranty period was past. The replacement oven has never had any electronic problems in the eight years since. Yes, I wish it had an internal light to see what was cooking better without opening the door. The only irritation and problem with this oven concerns the door - when you open it screeches - a serious metal on metal scraping. It isn't the hinge exactly; it originates from the slotted strap on the left hand side that limits the door travel (picture) and probably a pin hidden under the cover. I have tried silicone grease and graphite on the strap and adjusting the two screws by the hinge inside the oven - none of these provide other than a temporary respite from the door opening/closing noise. The picture shows that this rubbing is actually wearing away metal on one side of the strap.

The knobs started developing minds of their own and the buttons are just all messed up and crossed with each other. Pressing one will activate another one. Which ones? All of them. The main on/off button is the virtually non-working. Started noticing these issues shortly after warranty period (big surprise). Convection fan is stuck and doesn't do anything. Oven is made so I can't easily open up the side to try and loosen the fan. Used compressed air to get it spinning, but ceases up immediately when in use again. Time to ditch this frustration and get a newer more dependable one.

This is my second oven of this model type. First unit bought in/around 2013. Second in 2018. The are temperature accurate ( I checked with a thermocouple). Quick to heat up. Do a good job at what they are supposed to do. But they are perfectly designed through planned obsolesce. They do not last very long and so far both of mine gave up the ghost after 3-5 years. I took the first one completely apart to recycle it just to see how it was designed and constructed. There is little to no insulation in these ovens this is why the exterior gets so hot. They are designed to be put together fast on an assembly line for high volume production. My first oven the display died. On the second oven the convection fan seized up. My first oven the display died. On the second oven the convection fan seized up. It made a bad noise for about 10 seconds then seized. Now it's locked up. I sent in the second one to Breville for repair at a cost of $125 which is reasonable since it includes shipping. We will see how long it takes for them to repair/replace and get it back to me. I do not have any experience with other counter top ovens from competitors so I can't compare. I was born in the 60's so I still remember when product were made better to last longer. But our economy is based on consumption so this is what we get now. I am still of the mindset that I'd rather pay 25-50% more in capital cost for a longer lasting appliance. It's better for the environment and more convenient to have something that you rely on every day work when expected.

Now that is what I call support and service. THANK YOU!!!As for the product itself, this is my second Breville toaster oven. I gave the first one to my daughter. Breville toaster ovens are by far the best toaster ovens on the market in quality, features, build and easy of use. I have used the toaster oven in lieu of the regular oven 90% of the time in the past 5 years. It heats up faster, cooks better and doesn't heat up the entire house. My goal someday (when I have enough $$) is to own the following Breville products - Microwave, coffee maker, food processor and immersion blender. ... MoreI commend Breville for standing behind their products. I am a professionally trained chef having worked as an executive chef for the last 20 years in several Michelin star restaurants. I was given this oven as a gift by a dear friend who knew I had several Breville products at home that I loved and used often. This will never be one of them.I only use this oven at home - infrequently at best. Even with this light usage, this oven began to fail within the first few months of use.First off, I would like to point out the function and settings buttons. For the cost of this machine let alone the brand name, I was immediately disappointed right off the bat at the design and usability of the knobs and buttons. The power button is so poorly illuminated that if you are not really looking for it, you can't tell if the power ... MoreI am a professionally trained chef having worked as an executive chef for the last 20 years in several Michelin star restaurants. For the cost of this machine let alone the brand name, I was immediately disappointed right off the bat at the design and usability of the knobs and buttons. The power button is so poorly illuminated that if you are not really looking for it, you can't tell if the power is on (more on this later). The turning feature offers very little feedback and feels as cheap as a knob on an off-brand boom box from the '80s.Turning on the convection feature at times will often change the temp reading from Fahrenheit to Celsius - eight times out of ten. The defrost button will only work randomly even if pressing it a half dozen times. The temperature and time setting dials are way too sensitive making it difficult to get the correct time and temp set while also offering no solid feedback. It would have been better if the turning knobs just required a quarter turn in direction to raise or lower the temp. When the convection feature is turned on, the oven fan soon begins to make a loud screeching noise, which even overpowers the tv in the living room – an entire floor below. The power button began to malfunction after only 4 months, immediately switching off a soon as it turns on and having to press it several times to power on.Then, the oven began to turn itself off in the middle of a cooking session and even power on when I was at work! I was lucky the place did not burn down to the ground as I had items on the counter in close proximity to the oven which could have easily caught fire.Since then, it has remained unplugged, and more less is now just taking up counter space. From now on I will not spend money on any of their appliances due to my experience with their current manufacturing quality and this oven. I'll just stick to the lower price-point consumer products which work far better than this expensive one and offer a no-hassle exchange for defective hazardous products.I would be willing to give Breville another chance as they used to be known for having superior products and support, but they would not even replace this item as I could not provide a receipt, due to it being a gift. They are well aware that a large percentage of their sales are purchased as gifts and without a receipt, it gives them a way out to not stand behind their products for replacement - even if it's a fire hazard. So sad.

I have had my Smart Oven, model BOV800XL for many years. I'm not certain how many years I've had it but possibly since its first appearance on the market. I've had it a long time. I performs very well and the only exception I would mention is that the buttons are sensitive and finding the temp takes some finesse and the type of operation (roast, bake, toast, etc) is also touchy but just takes some patience to find the right one. Otherwise, I've used it for baking all sorts of foods, for toasting bread, for reheating food, etc and it has always performed very well. I leave the convection feature ON all the time and I've never had any squeaking or odd noises emanating from it. I love it and hope it lasts a long long time!

I could pull it off, but I sent our old one to Breville repair. They binned our old one and sent us a new one.The new one works great. The buttons push and operate as they should, I can turn the noisy convection fan on and off as I please. To be brief, instead if getting another Beta test Toaster Oven, we got the one Breville should have been selling in 2014. Will our family be saying, "Wow! what a great old appliance, I'll keep it." as thet clean out our estate? That remains to be seen.

I specifically chose to buy my Breville from William Sonoma rather than its competitors, who were offering the product for this same price, because I thought that Wm Sonoma stood behind its products. I am even more disappointed with the quality of this product, as problems with the convection fan appear to be a common issue.

You're certainly charging enough to where this shouldn't have been an issue.
