Good, but the paddle has some design flaws

The machine is easy to use, and works fairly quickly, but the simple paddle has a notable design flaw; There's a couple mm between the edge of the paddle and the side of the container. As a result some of the liquid always freezes against the side of the container and becomes hard. As you scoop out the contents there's a notable texture difference between the ice cream that's churned in the center versus the stuff on the sides. They should add either a silicone paddle or a silicone border that scrapes the side clean while churning to make sure the texture is more uniform.

Great For First 3.5 Years Five

Why would anyone want to purchase an appliance from Breville if the company will no longer stand behind its products? And, what falls into the category of “small” appliances? If the ice creme maker is in the small category at $499, does the top of the line Breville espresso machine ($2,799) also fall in the “small appliance” category? Some of the Breville “small appliances” are quite expensive to no longer be supported by Breville when needing to be repaired! Needless to say, this experience has completely changed my perspective on the Breville company (brand), which I always viewed as high a quality manufacturer of small appliances.Extremely disappointing...

Great machine - but with some obvious areas of improvement

It's not a quiet machine, so don't expect to have it on freezing your dessert while you are enjoying your dinner. Areas for improvement: 1) the control dial is perpetually turning. This is awkward as it inspires you to turn and turn and turn and turn the dial. It's not clear whether this damages the machine in any way or has any effect. 2) Pouring prepared custard into the machine is a bit of a messy affair. Given the price point of this machine, I think it should come with a proprietary silicone cup that can accommodate 3.5 cups of hot or cold liquid and pour cleanly into the machine. Finally, the completion time for hot liquids takes close to an hour. That's not out of range, but many home meals are eaten in far less than this, so again, if you are hoping to make a fresh dessert, you are better off making the custard in advance, chilling in the fridge, and popping it into the machine to finish in 20-25 minutes right when you need it. It would be helpful if the user manual had a comparison table for this.

Great machine but noisy
8 December 2023

Makes a great selection of sorbets, gelato and ice cream using the recipe book included. I would definitely recommend another recipe book to increase your repertoire and also offer some quicker prep versions. I bought the Ben & Jerry's Ice cream book which is amazing. The main drawback about this machine is the noise. I read previous reviews so was not unaware of this, but it is definitely not a machine you can run in the background during dinner parties if you have an open-plan kitchen/diner as I have!

OK machine, Barely does the job, Let down by weak motor.
8 September 2021

Bit of a love/hate relationship with this machine. Overall this seems to be a pretty well-built machine, with a pretty slick design as most ice cream machines are pretty ugly hunks of metal. It has lasted 5 years and its abilities have not diminished.I found the automatic setting to be pretty gimmicky and misleading as the ice cream struggles to reach an appropriate level of hardness. I don't think a machine of this price should require you to store the ice cream in the freezer to harden, it should be able to achieve a decent hardness level on its own.The motor does not have adequate power to mix the ice cream too much over the level of what realistically speaking would be "frozen yoghurt" which is slightly disappointing given that the automatic function ... MoreBit of a love/hate relationship with this machine. I don't think a machine of this price should require you to store the ice cream in the freezer to harden, it should be able to achieve a decent hardness level on its own.The motor does not have adequate power to mix the ice cream too much over the level of what realistically speaking would be "frozen yoghurt" which is slightly disappointing given that the automatic function indicates that it can go beyond that. More often than not, I will hear the motor struggling to push through the mix before it has actually reached a servable level of hardness.I also found that tried and tested recipes with lower fat contents such as the ones for frozen yoghurt or gelato etc are not suitable for this machine, and that the end result is overly icy, unpleasant to eat and very runny out of the machine. It does however do a good job with egg-based/custard type recipes which I've had to tailor to the capabilities of this machine. On a side note, the lid design is quite flimsy and has been replaced after breaking. I think this is a common issue, Be careful when opening the flap on the lid.In summary, I am impressed that the machine still works after 5 years (although it hasn't been used heavily) but I am disappointed that the motor is severely underpowered and will struggle to churn to what most people would consider a decent level of hardness. I would love it if there was an option to upgrade to a stronger motor, as without it, the automatic hardness settings are a bit misleading for they cannot be acheived.I can't say I could recommend this product, as its attractive design isn't quite enough to make up for its capabilities. I think Breville is pretty close to domestic appliance perfection with this one, but the issue with the motor is a real letdown.

Perfect Ice Cream - Easy to Use
28 April 2024

I am very pleased with the Breville Scoop. 5 Stars, definitely. It really helps me perfect my ice cream and saves me lots of time. Easy to use and clean. The Pre-cool function makes this a must buy option over any other machine.(I purchased another bowl and stirrer, separately. Must admit not easy to source, and somewhat pricey. I wish these could be readily available accessories, particularly if you like to make multiple batches.)

Perfect ice cream, but a bit loud
20 January 2024

Great ice cream maker, works wonderfully. Not having to pre-freeze parts is handy, although most recipes require preparation a day before or so anyway.I tried a couple of the "traditional" ice cream recipes and they came out flawlessly. However, when it comes to frozen yogurt, the "Auto" feature does not really work as the resulting big blog of ice just keeps spinning for ages. It's also quite loud while churning; enough to be really annoying, impossible to have a conversation in the kitchen while it's on. I have to run it in a far away corner of the house, or it would drive me mental. The machine is great for freezing and churning, but in my experience it's best to put the ice cream that comes out in the freezer for 1 or 2 hours before consuming.

Test before you take it home!
27 August 2024

I just bought one today and right out of the box the hardness setting rotary knob did not work. I saw online that many others have had this problem. I returned it to the big box store and got another and tested it in the store this time before leaving and found that one to work fine. Bonus was that the store gave me a 50$ discount for the inconvenience! Yay! So far I've made 3 batches on day one and I'm AMAZED by the quality of the ice cream! I made a standard vanilla bean custard base and found that it finished in only about 35 mins! Faster than I've seen others post online. I so want to give this a 5 star but I'm annoyed with the cheap, flimsy knob that I hope won;t fail on this second machine I bought. Really enjoying this machine and hope it lasts!

Thrilled with this product, I hesitated buying at first because I already have 2 ice cream machines with bowls that need to be frozen before I can use them. It was a hassle to find room in my packed freezer and always having to plan too far ahead. With this machine I made both ice cream or gelato as soon as I got the inspiration and both were delicious and creamy. With The Smart Scoop, you can really tell the difference between the 2 textures, so glad I purchased this amazing machine! I also love The Entertainer ice cream tune that plays when the ice cream is ready, that makes it super fun when the little ones hear it! My only wish is for a larger bowl so I could make more ice cream or gelato the first time instead of splitting into two batches. It would be more convenient but honestly, it doesn’t take that long to do a 2nd batch. You just have to ensure the bowl is COMPLETELY dry before it goes back into the machine. But from a gadget girl’s perspective, it’s one of the funnest kitchen purchases I’ve ever made!

Wonderful addition to the kitchen
3 May 2024

I have used the machine two times and love it. While I was told it was quite noisy, I didn't find it to be a problem. I have only one small problem - and it may be my fault - but there seems to be no way to tell when to add ad-ons - such as nuts, chocolate chips, etc. The only time I heard a sound was when churning had finshed. The manual says the machine will. signal when ad-ons go in but I never heard it. When used in automatic mode, I haven't noticed the display showing time - that way, I would know when to add chips, etc. If used in time mode, no. problem. As I said, this is a minor problem and may be my own fault. I have tried calling Breville but I never e through. All in all, Im glad I purchased the ice cream machine,
