Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens
To experience the ultimate in wide-angle photography, the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM brings L-series construction and optics to the widest zoom lens Canon has ever made. With an expansive wide-angle range of 11-24mm, this is an ideal lens for landscapes, interior shots, and unique perspectives on subjects close and far. Its new optical design features Super UD and UD lenses that correct chromatic aberration. Four aspheric lens elements help to minimize distortion from the center of the image to the periphery and throughout the zoom range. A Subwavelength Coating (SWC) and Air Sphere Coating (ASC) significantly reduce flare and ghosting, while a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm creates beautiful, blurred backgrounds. For silent and fast AF, it features a rear focus system and ring USM, and can be manually focused even when in AF mode. It has a minimum focusing distance of 11 in. /0.28m (extreme telephoto) for admirable performance and results even when shooting in tight spaces. Constructed to L-series specifications, the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM is durable and rugged due to its highly dust and water resistant design, so it is prepared for shooting in any number of environments. It also has fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements for reducing smears and fingerprints. With a compact design that includes an integrated hood and compatibility with all EOS cameras, the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM is a must-have lens for photographers that demand excellent performance for truly expressive images anywhere.

I've been with Canon for about 10 years, using crop sensor and some kit lens. Last year I worked a small job for the county and made enough to buy two L lens. I had a drive with over 70,000 photos taken with the old stuff, so I did some research. I found that most of my photos were taken from 18mm up to 135mm. I had maybe 200 photos taken past that. So I did a lot of research and decided to start out with two L lens, one a wide one, and the other one that could do a large majority of what I do. So I bought this lens and also the Canon 24-105mm/4. I'll review the 24-105 later. I've include here a photo taken at 16mm from a parking garage. Then a 200% enlargement and then a 400% enlargement which shows a corner area. This was the first time using this lens and I was pleasantly surprised. I had a real estate shoot and the rooms were quite small. The 16mm was a great option. Images were sharp (shot f9-11) and distortion was minimal. The lens correction option in Lightroom was a minimal difference when selected. The distortion was not as drastic in most shots as I thought it would be! Enjoyed the lens - I would rent again, maybe even buy!

I have never purchased this lens and that's what makes this review one worth considering: I've used about two dozen different copies of this lens at work over the last few years, and that's given me a very balanced view of it. I hope my experience will help a working photog determine if this is what they need. The short of it is: this is a solid working lens that you can rely on in any application where you'd shoot with a lens with these characteristics, and I recommend it without reservation. It is well suited to a professional working environment (a strength of Canon gear, in general) and will produce easily acceptable results in competent hands. The long of it is: this lens is good but by no means extraordinary, if that's what you're chasing. The quality of the lens is quite variable from copy to copy, in my considerable experience. Most of the copies I used were simply good; not great, but certainly good enough. I had one copy that was an exceptional outlier, it was incredibly sharp and had very little distortion, but it seemed like a fluke as it was far better than all the others. I also had a few copies that were mediocre enough that I'd have returned them if they'd been purchased, but they still got the job done. On the average, this is a good lens, and very good for the price; but from what I've seen, there's a very small chance you can get really lucky with a great copy, and a slightly better chance you'll get a sub-par copy. Luck of the draw there, to some extent.Nevertheless I wouldn't hesitate to buy this lens to use for certain professional applications (I use it for architectural interiors and action sports). It's fairly typical of Canon glass with average contrast and good color rendition. Distortion, sharpness and vignetting are all acceptable and in any case improvable in post. IS is helpful and usable for about 2.5 extra stops, and it's really nice that it's switchable on the lens barrel along with AF/MF. Like most of Canon's upper-tier equipment (it's cheap but it's still L glass) it's transparent to use and just works w/o any special thought, and that's probably it's greatest virtue. If you're a working professional who just needs a good tool at a good price, well then, here you go. This is it.If you're a middle-aged dude with a lot of extra money and time to pour over MTF charts and 200% pixel-peep zooms of meaningless scenes, you will hate this lens. You'll be much happier taking pictures of sunsets, rusty trucks and your grandson with something that costs two or three times more and gets rave reviews from people who've never been paid to shoot anything. No offense but you guys are real and I know you'll just get angry at this lens, so pass it over.

Amateur using EF/EFs mount lenses since the EOS 350D. This is simply the best lens I've ever used. It produces crystal-clear images on ASP-C and full-frame, with the focal length on full-frame opening up a whole new world of possibilities for landscape and travel shots. I've not tried the 2.8, but at this price you could buy a prime lens to go along with it! Its light weight and IS mean you can walk around all day, for your whole trip, without your arms feeling like jelly. It's great for time-lapse. The lens is almost always on my camera when I leave the house. To anyone looking for their first "L-lens," don't look any further -- you'll likely use this 20x more than a 70-200 :)
Bought this to shoot indoor (small studio) performances in Low light (One center light and two colored lights).Video quality is fantastic in full-HD. Could see the difference between this and some of the other lenses I used. Crisp images and proper focusing throughout the image / video.Being wide angle is really helpful as it can cover a wide space with multiple performers. Focusing is spot-on and recording multiple performers in the same space was easier. None of them were out of focus.Really an outstanding investment.
Better late than never! I bought this lens from Adorama in 2017 to use with my 6D. I was very happy with it, and now even happier when using it with my R5! It feels like a brand new lens and even sharper! This is the only EF lens and the old EF 50 f1.4 that are left, I have sold all my EF L lenses and slowly building up my RF collection. This lens rocks with mirrorless, if you own one, keep it!
So far, I've only taken a couple of test shots with this lens. I have a Canon EF 10-22mm M-mount lens which doesn't work on my EOS 6D MII (I used it with my EOS 7D), and a Sigma 20mm f/1.4 wide angle lens. The Sigma lens is great for nighttime and landscape photography, but I don't like the distortion it creates when doing something like real estate photography. Also, the Sigma lens requires moving forward or backward to compose a shot just right. The new 16-35mm lens fills the gap lost by the other two lenses, short of the lowlight flexibility by the Sigma lens. In the test shots, I found the distortion (stretching of the imagine) to be better managed than the Sigma lens (which is what I am looking for), but the image quality doesn't seem to show the sharpness of ... MoreSo far, I've only taken a couple of test shots with this lens. I think this lens will meet the needs for way I intend to use it. Each of my images were taken from the same spot, handheld. This is one of 11 lenses I use on a regular basis.
I was on a trip to New York and I've been there several times before and seen the tourist sites so many times, but this time I wanted to go with a decent glass in front of my camera. I have a relatively midrange camera, Canon T3i from a few years back and have been using the kit 18-55mm, and a separately purchased 55-250mm. They were good, decent, I got my wide angles and telephoto range taken care of.But I wanted that Red Ring. So I ante'd up and got this 16-35 L from a Best Buy somewhere between my home in another state and New York City. From the moment snapped it in place and snapped the first pic in the hotel room, I could immediately tell the difference in sharpness, even on the tiny screen behind the camera. This lens is worlds beyond the EF-S lenses I was using before. The auto-focus is quick, and the image stabilization is a must have for me, with shaky hands. One of the main things I wanted was the IS, that'll add a couple hundred dollars to the price of any L lens.It is a bit on the bulky side, bit its a great amount of glass inside. The build quality is magnificent and feels solid in your hands; the focus and zoom rings are very pleasant to spin.Of course this is a wide angle lens, better suited for landscapes etc, but I've kind of made it my go to, I don't care that its a wide angle, the photos just come out so much better than any other lens.BTW, I'm no photographer, but I like getting results, I know what I get into and I wouldn't spend $1K without understanding what I'm getting. It's a superior product. There's plenty of reviews of L lenses on the internet, video and written articles, so go have yourself a look, and don't just take my word for it.
I have had the 17-40 f4 for ages. I shoot for fun now so upgrading was not a no-brainer. I am glad I did choose to buy! Clearly Canon has made some leaps in design and construction. My lens is almost silent when focusing and it is fast. My handheld test shots were nearly as sharp as my recently purchased 35 f2. The color I am getting on a 5D mkIV is beautiful. I think my EF lens inventory is complete now.
After doing a few shoots with this lens, it has proven to be everything I hoped it would be. Like most of the reviews state, I am happy with the sharpness and auto-focus capabilities. Ultimately, I decided that 99% of my shooting would not require fast shutter speeds in low light, and thus I opted instead for the image stabilization with the f/4.One thing I would like to point out is regarding vignetting. Everyone knows it's an issue to watch in wide angle lenses and I had read how good the f/4 was in comparison to the f/2.8. When I loaded my first shots into LightRoom (LR) I was a little disappointed by the strong vignetting I saw. When I loaded my first shots into LightRoom (LR) I was a little disappointed by the strong vignetting I saw. However, after applying LR's "Enable Profile Correction" it disappeared, albeit with losing just a touch of the edges as it adjusted the photo. (See attached picture for the LR before and after applying the lens profile correction). However, fret not... when I looked at the raw image in the native Windows viewer, there was no vignetting at all. Therefore, it's something LR is doing when displaying the CR2 file and NOT the lens itself. And, again, it's easily corrected by applying the profile. Therefore, from my testing, this lens performs remarkably well on all counts and is tons of fun to use (it's my first UWA lens) opening a whole new world of creativity. Solid build quality that one would expect from an L-series from Canon.
