Piece of cake from start to finish: few clicks on the website to order, package shows up on time, everything is nice and snug in the box, lens works perfectly and focus is spot-on with no microfocus adjustment needed, box it up when done using material provided by Lensrentals, drop off at FedEx. Plus, saved money with a coupon code. This is how it goes pretty much every time with Lensrentals, especially over the past couple of years. Excellent business!

I chose this lens as a compromise to get the maximum focal length against weight (and cost) as I tend to walk around when shooting wildlife rather than use a tripod or monopod. The 500mm f/4 is just too heavy for me to walk round with or hand-hold at eye-level for long periods. The 400mm f/4 DO can be used with a x2 Extender Mk3 maintaining full functionality with the Canon EOS 1DXMk2 and partial (but completely usable) functionality with a Canon EOS 5DSR, both having a max aperture of f/8 with the Extender in place. Any loss of resolution with the Extender seems to be unnoticeable. My first few sets of pictures have been very satisfactory, the extra reach of 800mm being a significant improvement over my previous maximum of 560mm from a 100mm-400m lens with a x1.4 ... MoreI chose this lens as a compromise to get the maximum focal length against weight (and cost) as I tend to walk around when shooting wildlife rather than use a tripod or monopod. The velcro-fastening sock provided is fiddly to get on and off.Overall, the lens construction is superb, the tripod mounting ring clicks every quarter turn so you can position it accurately. There is a ring switch that enables you to change between auto and manual focus and a button that will instantly refocus the lens to a predetermined setting, as well as the usual IS options and focal length limiter buttons. The weight of the lens is only 2.1kg, apparently achieved as a result of using the DO optics, but if it didn't say DO on the name plate, you wouldn't know there was anything unusual inside from the result of the pictures. Optically, there is very slight and easily corrected vignetting, not noticed any CA.Being a Canon white lens, it is very expensive, no getting away from that, especially if you are a hobbyist rather than a revenue earning photographer. I am pleased I got this lens, it provides a valuable addition to my armoury.

For what I am going to use it for it will be ideal for those full frame shots of wild life and landscape items like a specific tree on a land point view. These will be in sharp focus.

My primary use of LensCoat is on super telephoto lenses. It provides some cosmetic protection to the surfaces of my long glass. IMO the product pays for itself when I sell the old glass to upgrade. Folks feel better buying a used product that looks good. Consequently my used items sell quicker at a better price. The improvement over the original design, at least for the original item I had, is on the piece that stretches over the sunshade. The current design has a nice round cutout that slips over the thumb screw used to tighten the sunshade to the lens. In general the fit is good and the provided windows align reasonably well allowing me to move all the lens switches and see what I need to see. It does what it's designed to do.
I have recently become serious about wildlife photography and after reading how others have been able to get much closer to the critters when wearing camo, I decided to give it a try. I have to admit, it makes me feel like when I was a young tom-boy as I normally do not wear such masculine attire. But, if it means getting closer to my furry and feathered friends!!! Well, I decided to go full force and purchase the LensCoats for three of my super-telephoto lenses. I love them! They serve several purposes including camouflage, protection, insulation, and they are the perfect accessory to my new camo outfit! I feel that they were quite expensive for what you get, but sometimes you just have to splurge when you have an obsession. I feel that they were quite expensive for what you get, but sometimes you just have to splurge when you have an obsession. I thought of trying to make my own for a couple of other lenses, but I have a feeling it may not be as easy as it looks. I will keep you posted!
The only thing to say is IMO if you are not sure whether you want this lens vs the 300 f2.8 IS II or 500 f4 IS II, you probably would be better with the other options. Just my opinion on what I have seen. But if the 300 is not long enough and the 500 too big and/or heavy, this lens is awesome. Bokeh and sharpness are much improved over the version 1. Sharpness is really great, top notch. Bokeh is not perfect, but is quite decent in most situations. Just occasionally it can still look a little ugly. Check out sample images, no one stops this lens down for sharpness.
I use this with a 5D Mark III and IV, and image quality is awesome. It is markedly sharper than a 100-400. The auto-focus is fast. There 3 auto-focus settings based on the distance of the object, so selecting the right one can speed up the autofocus time. The lens is easily packed for the overhead bin or in a lens backpack that I use. As for weight, I can handhold for some amount of time, but recommend a tripod, of course. My only complaint is the lens hood is very long, but it inverts for packing.
I'm fairly new to the world of photography with my interest centering around macro. But this lens has totally changed everything. And since the weather is so nice I thought I'd try outdoor photography as the summers bring the animals to life and the sporting programs beginning in schools. So I thought why not expand my equipment and add one of the best lenses for those 2 types of photography.I had no idea the possibilities that the world of lenses created. I am thrilled that I opened my budget to include this lens. I can no longer see using any otherr lens for the purposes stated above. In this instance you certainly get what you pay for.
While the 400 2.8 L will always be king, it can be a pain (literally and figuratively) to lug around – making it very tough to handhold. The 400 f4 DO is fast, sharp, and very lightweight for the reach and aperture you get. I shoot a lot of water sports (wakeboarding, water skiing, etc) where I'm following athletes from another boat (or floating in the water as they ride by). I can hand hold this lens and get killer results.
Usual product you would expect from LensCoat but some BIG BUTs.- in this day of technology the manufacturing is pretty low tech. Narrow sewn joints? (that start to fray after a while) Seriously? There are tons of edge bonding materials out there for flexible materials or soft materials.- Cut-outs - if they can make cutouts for the hood screw, and extenders. They can surely make cutouts for the tripod collar. 99% of users I see in the field just leave this part uncovered due to the fine cutting work that needs to be done. There are only 2 rings for the strap that need a cutout. If we do cut out, the sticky backing will eventually start to peel. There are modern gluing materials that will prevent this from happening or harder but not impossible to peel off if ... MoreUsual product you would expect from LensCoat but some BIG BUTs.- in this day of technology the manufacturing is pretty low tech. There are only 2 rings for the strap that need a cutout. If we do cut out, the sticky backing will eventually start to peel. There are modern gluing materials that will prevent this from happening or harder but not impossible to peel off if necessary.- Hood Caps - these are usually a little loose fitting and fall off easily. A deeper depth could fix this easily, maybe double. Alternatively 2 velcro stickers inside the cap would also fix it. But the inside material of the cap and the surface of the hood cover are not good solutions for sticky back fasteners. Sewing in the velcro would work. For those who do not use hood caps the velcro on the hood cover, can be either left alone or just unstitched. The manufactures cap does not usually fit when the hood cover is used so most of us do get thehood caps too.- Lastly, Asian manufactures are innovating really hard and eventually, another NA product is gone if LensCoat does not pick up its game.Surely more modern and resilient materials and assembly methods would go a long way to keep LC in front of the fast chasing pack.
