When I bought my Canon 70D 18 months ago for $1000, I couldn't believe it would cost me $300 more to upgrade to this zoom for my kit lens, so I took the standard 18-55 STM, a newer version of the Canon 18-55 IS II I got with my trusty old Canon T3 starter DSLR that I still love to use because of its compactness, weight, and excellent picture quality with ease of use. And most importantly, its one lens to cover all requirements, cutting down on lugging lenses. FYI: My upgraded 18-55mm STM that came with the Canon 70D is not going to waste, as I now keep it mounted on my old Canon T3. It's better for videos and only added about 1/4 inch to the lens length in my bag. (The original Canon T3 18-55 lens is retired.) My advice is to get a Canon 18-135mm STM upfront with your camera purchase, as once you have it, you'll never take it off and the 18-55mm STM will gather dust, unless you have another Canon EOS or Rebel like me to use it on.

I got this with my 80D, and I use it almost all the time. Over several cameras, I have owned the 17-85, the 17-55/2.8, an 18-135 STM, but this lens beats them all. I compared it to the 17-55/2.8, and I think the 18-135 USM has as good or better image, plus the much longer range, makes it my go-to lens. Yes, f2.8 can be useful, but... I have traveled 2 weeks in Italy and a week in Israel, and a week in Austria and used this lens almost exclusively (about 3000 images). I still like a wider angle and a longer telephoto sometimes, but the versatility of this lens is great. I love the USM focusing so much. I wish the new RF18-150 used a USM focusing motor, and pretty much all the RF lower cost lenses. There cannot be enough savings to spoil the user experience of USM ... For me, this is the perfect travel lens. From wide angle to decent telephoto. And it is super lightweight. It was advertises being in use condition, but it certainly looked brand new when I got it.

Although I am entirely satisfied with the latter, I was always sorry that I had given away the former because of the longer reach. So, I bought the white-box version of the 18-135 mm lens from B&H. Of course, I knew that it was not a low-light lens, and since I bought and installed a Hoya polarizer on it, it was even less so. I needed a new lens to replace the one I dropped. This lens works great and is just as good as brand new. I use the lens to record weekly Sunday worship service as well as special events at the preschool and church. This lens works perfect for the distance I need to record and zooms exactly the right distance in when necessary. I highly recommend this lens. I know it may be a sort of kit lens but I love it and use it more than most lenses when recording in indoor settings.
This is truly the first cheap canon lens I would say is worth purchasing for a starter. The range is pretty fantastic, and the aperture is relatively bright. Build quality is pretty good, but I wish there was instant manual focus override. Overall, image quality is very fantastic on starter cameras, making it great value.

It's well constructed and has a metal lens mount - which can't be said for many kit lenses on the market today (from all brands).Having said all that, I actually keep this lens on my Canon SL2 and it is the perfect "take anywhere" combination that allows you to capture a good 95% of the scenes and events you may run into. I'm only assigning this lens 4 stars - actually, if I could give it 3.5 stars, that would be more accurate as it does most things nicely, but excels in very few scenarios. Look - even the Canon (totally inexpensive) EF-S 18-55 f3.5-5.6 IS lens has better overall optical clarity levels than this 18-135. As an aside, if you want 3 sharp EF-S lenses that will impress you with their ridiculously low prices, yet are capable of stellar optical clarity, look at the following lenses:EF-S 18-55 F/3.5-5.6 ISEF-S 10-18 F/4.5-5.6 ISEF-S 55-250 F/4.0-5.6 IS STMDepending on where you buy them from, you could get all 3 for less than $550. They are built fairly well - but do have plastic lens mounts - and the optical clarity of these lenses can have you scratchin' your head because they are so good. I know - I have all 3 of those lenses and I still shake my head in delight every time I see images captured by these lenses. So the bottom line is that if you don't want to change lenses and you want to keep just one lens on your camera all of the time (or most of the time), this Canon 18-135 should do the trick.

Focus is fast, silent and accurate. Bokeh is not bad - check out the Monarch photo attached. It is great for traveling when I only have room to pack the smaller body and one lens.I can also use it on my EOS C100 Mk II, as it is on the short-list of lenses that support DPAF face-detection. This is also the only lens supported by the Canon PZ-E1 power zoom adapter, so I can use the BR-E1 remote to control zoom, focus and shutter.Overall when I compare images from the 90D with this lens, versus 5D Mk IV using L-series lenses, I can hardly notice any difference. I have happily used this lens as a all-purpose lens when shooting large scale conventions where I had to capture many varied scenes, some close up, some farther away, sometimes shooting portraits, other times shooting large groups, and often shooting action indoors. As there is generally no time to change lenses to best suit the scene - one lens must do it all, and do it well, especially when some images will be selected for publication in a magazine, etc. I simply adjust for exposure and white balance, and shoot away, quickly zooming in and out to compose the shot - as focus and exposure are very accurate and reliable. AND, this is the ONE lens I would take on a trip across Europe or across the US - it covers wide to modest tele and everything in between - excellent when touring factories, breweries, distilleries (my favorite), and museums. I purchased this lens as a replacement lens for a 18mm-270mm zoom lens that has been my go to lens since I purchased my SL1 many years ago, hoping to find a lens that will provide sharper images and improved color rendition. I have only owned this lens a few weeks and have only taken test photos, but those are sharper and crisper. After using this lens on a vacation or two, I am hoping that I will be able to give it five stars.
