A super sharp zoom lens with amazing image stablization

Very sharp lens. Auto focus is very fast, too. Very very minor vignetting at very wide side, but very easy to fix in photoshop. Most importantly, the image stabilization works amazingly, you could even hand hold the camera to picture a waterfall by standing very closely. I also tried to shoot a landscape picture with milky way in the sky, the lens delivered very amazing results. In all, a stunning landscape lens to me, and superior quality under dark environment.

I really don't like writing reviews because most of the time its a personal perspective. But this lens is utterly out of this world. I had the EF version and there is no comparison. I don't know why some say you don't need f 2.8. But while taking photos with this lens I was surprised at how many of my photos were shot a f 2.8. Sharpness is out of this world. Bokeh is incredible for such a wide angle. I was on the fence about purchasing the 14-35 f 4 L. Look if you can afford it buy it. If you like the best buy it. If you want absolutely the best photos to remember, buy it. This is one of my best purchases and I am so glad I bought it. This is why I only write reviews when I have something to say. And this time Canon did a wonderful job.

For being reasonably exotic and specialized, this is a very forgiving lens to work with. It's one of the least obtrusive and lightest lenses in the RF/L range, which isn't saying much, but it does feel like air when you switch to it. It allows you to be quick, and almost off-handed with shots and composition with an extremely wide field of view. It is missing the precision of the tighter and brighter L lenses, but I imagine cropping is rare in this FOV range with so much perspective distortion, so it's unlikely that you'll ever see the loss of detail in most final images (I usually end up targeting ~8% of the sensor's resolution and using the full area). It doesn't have a particularly flattering bokeh character, which again isn't normally a concern at wide angles, ... MoreFor being reasonably exotic and specialized, this is a very forgiving lens to work with. Over longer distances, larger-scale street scenes in particular, I think it has a fantastic character. It's an easy lens to recommend since, well, Canon isn't Sony and has this lens and not a dozen or more compelling wide angle options.

Good lens with manufacturing issues
18 September 2021

I hate to write a poor review of this lens because it is obviously a first-rate design with benchmark performance. However, I must say that of the four samples I have purchased, none were keepers because of what appears to be misaligned lens elements. Parts of the image are significantly blurry at certain focal lengths while most of the image is sharp. I saw this on all of the samples I've tried. Two were ordered direct from Canon, one from Amazon and one from B&H. All were returned. These are the only Canon lenses I have ever returned. I am not alone. Others have experienced the same issues with this lens. I suspect it is a very difficult design to manufacture perfectly. Where it is sharp it is very sharp and contrasty. Slightly better than my old EF 16-35mm f/4L. ... MoreI hate to write a poor review of this lens because it is obviously a first-rate design with benchmark performance. Slightly better than my old EF 16-35mm f/4L. But the older lens has none of the problems I'm seeing with the new lens. Other than the alignment issue the main concern with the RF lens is the extreme vignetting at the widest aperture, which may be a concern in certain applications such as astrophotography. Here the lens also exhibits some coma in the corners and along the edges but it's not too bad. My Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 is better in this regard at half the price but is a beast compared to the Canon. The Canon is better in the daylight. I do mostly landscapes and nightscapes professionally with the Canon R5 and Ra cameras so maybe I'm more demanding of the equipment but I have never had these issues with any other Canon lenses. Hopefully this is useful information.

Great, but expensive… some arguments for f/4
17 September 2022

Amazing lens. RF glass is hard to beat. Perhaps fujifilm is the only one, especially at a much better price point if you want to be on a different camera system. But with canon you don’t have many options.I use the lens more for cinematography and less for photography which is why the f/2.8 version of the lens was better than the f/4 version. If you’re doing landscapes and interior you probably don’t need f/2.8 since you likely aren’t shooting wide open often.

One warning.
23 October 2022

Just received the lens. I like it, but a word to the wise. On my first outing and the local state park. I had the lens hood fall off twice. The first time I heard it hit the ground and figured I didn't seat it properly. The second time I had backtrack to find it. I'm left handed and tend to sling the camera over my right side. I found that this located the release button next to my body and if the release button somehow get pushed it does not have to be held to allow the hood to turn, which is not true of my other lenses. I mount the lens with the canon name facing downward to avoid. Probably not a common problem, but a replacement is $60 and knowing how it happen might be important.

Outstanding lens optics and range
19 July 2022

The RF 15-35 from Canon was amazing! It was exactly what I needed for this project. I was shooting video for a ‘virtual tour’ in a school with very old, epic looking buildings. The flexibility of the wide angle allowed me to capture the majesty and scope of each space. Having 35mm allowed me to frame the talent more closely for cut-ins. Finally, image stabilization is essential for video and this system works amazingly!

If you are doing any landscape or wide field this lens does the job. It is well built and feels like a quality product. You need be close to your point of interest as in your model face to ge the most out of the AF functions. The AF works like a champ in this scenario. However the AF does struggle wide open in lower light at distance when trying to catch eyes. In bright light is generally finds the subject. Over all the cost is stupid high for the focal range and the aperture of F2.8. I expected more from the AF but that could just be me? I usually shoot in manual mode anyway. I plan on using this lens for astro in manual mode so this lens fits the bill. However for anything else I will need another lens. My recommendation is to skip this lens in favor of a sigma EF ... MoreIf you are doing any landscape or wide field this lens does the job. It is well built and feels like a quality product. My recommendation is to skip this lens in favor of a sigma EF prime or canon EF prime lens unless you really need a flexible 15-35mm zoom for wide use. If your goal is general photography then buy the 24-70mm RF as it will be a more useful focal range. This will be my next lens purchase.

Ring of blur - no good for landscape
15 December 2022

Unfortunately I didn't buy this lens at BH, else I would have simply returned it. The lens is well made and has nice features - control ring, etc. It is also very sharp where it is sharp. I used it for landscapes and it always produced a ring of blur, about 20% into the frame from either side when shot at 15mm. The ring of blur would move toward the edge as I zoomed in. It was so bad that it wasn't usable for landscape.I got a loaner from the shop with the same issue. I returned my lens for repair, but the local Canon service center wasn't even able to detect the problem, let alone fix it.The problem is this: At close distance (6 feet / 2m or so) the lens is absolutely sharp edge to edge! I also tried the same lens on a different R5 body - still the same. IBIS on or off didn't make a difference.Eventually I sold all my Canon gear as I didn't find any good wide angle solution.

Sold me a used lens instead of new
18 January 2023

I purchased this lens during Best Buy’s sale for it. When I picked it up from the store, it was clear that the box was opened but the associate assured me that it was just a problem with the box. When I opened the item, it was clear that this lens had been taken out of the box. The lens bag was upside down and dirty, the lens was missing its plastic protetive sleeve, the lens itself was covered in some dust and glitter, the lens cap wasn’t even on the bottom of the lens, and the element had dust on it. I brought it back to the store, but I was told that I’d have to come back in tomorrow to have it exchanged. I’ll update this review once something happens. Stay safe out there, guys. I hope this doesn’t happen to one of y’all.
