I honestly struggled with what value my work would gain if I purchased this very expensive lens. See I have been using the RF 100-500 with a 1.4x extender if I needed extra range. The images with set-up are sharp but I would find myself pushing the ISO due to the aperture constraints. Do, I popped and I am glad I did. This lens focuses fast, is the sharpest lens I have ever used and the low aperture provides higher shutter speeds with lower ISO. I highly recommend this lens.

The difference in weight between this one and the mkII is instantly noticable, and may give you the impression that you can just hand carry it all day. You can, but you will be sore, especially if your subject requires patience (like the green heron I was watching, trying to get a fish). Optically I couldn't tell the difference between this and the mkII, and performance with the 1.4 teleconverter was still excellent. Even with the 2x there was no slowdown in af or eye lock (with my R5) and only minor loss of fidelity. At the end of the rental the hard part was sending it back, vs making it a keeper.

My all-around favorite wildlife lens for the R5 is the RF100-500. I shoot lots of birds, and larger wildlife is often 40-50+ yards away which is a good range for the 600f4 to fill up a frame. I often shoot into the evening and this f4 prime provides the extra light/sharpness that the f4.5-7.1 100-500 could not do at full zoom in low light. The image quality of the 600 is obviously an improvement over the 100-500 lens, which was very good. The 600f4 is surprisingly sharp and focus is quick. I'm 60+, 5' 11 180lbs and can manage handholding this big lens for up to 30 seconds with effort. The 100-500 was easy. I've now bought/use a monopod which makes the weight a non-issue. I have owned the lens for less than two weeks. Have used it outside Salt Lake City at some discharge ponds and will soon do some dawn and dusk swan photography in Arkansas. I make bird food so my back yard was a perfect starting venue for the RF600mm f/4. I am an amateur but felt like I needed to move up after five years of shooting Canon's best super-telephoto and telephoto RF lenses. I am glad that I did.To begin with the lens is relatively light in weight. Hand held is definitely doable and accurate if one braces the elbow against one's ribs. Obviously a high quality tripod/gimbal combination is ideal and this lens balances beautifully on mine. Obviously a high quality tripod/gimbal combination is ideal and this lens balances beautifully on mine. Just know that one can do hand held with relative ease because of the lens balance.Things I like: Images are indeed gorgeous paired with both my R5 and R6. Cropping to a high degrees, although not ideal but sometimes necessary, does not lead to unacceptable IQ loss. The many customizations are all very easily learned and I like the focus preset options (two) and the ability to set differing focal distances. The lens is incredibly well-made.Things I'd like to see: Canon needs to put Arca-type feet on the rotatable collar of these lenses as other manufacturers are beginning to do. Why should owners pay a very hefty sum for the lens then add on another $100 or more for a replacement foot? The Arca-type foot replacement simply removes an additional step and potentially danger element from tripod use but we shouldn't have to pay for it. I purchased the Wemberley AP-600 after consulting B & H. It is perfect and lower profile than the factory foot. I'd also liked to have seen both a clear drop-in filter and, additionally, a polarizing drop-in filter in the box. The clear filter only is included.Summarizing, this is one hell of a piece of glass. I am truly amazed at the quality of the images, after less than two weeks use. Low light difficult wildlife shots are still low light and difficult but made much easier with this lens. If you are a professional you already own this lens or one of its EF predecessors; if you are an enthusiastic advancing amateur like me and are thinking of buying this lens, do it.
I bought a "new" RF 600 mm from Canon's website. On my third use the lens broke - I could hear something rattling around inside and it wouldn't focus (I never dropped it, had hardly even used it). When I sent it in for repair they told me the warranty is void because it's already had a poorly-done repair on one of the inner pieces. Essentially then, I paid for a new lens, got a used one, and they're blaming me for this. I've had to get a lawyer and file a credit card dispute over the matter. And this after being a loyal customer for years (I have two R5s, 8 lenses, and numerous other accessories). Be careful buying from Canon...
Outstanding image quality. I use an R5 to shoot wildlife. Frequently crop to achieve desired composition. IQ holds up very well, even with a substantial crop. Also frequently pair with the RF 1.4x tele-extender to achieve 840mm. Hand holding, while possible, is not for the timid. A strong tripod with gimbal head, or a monopod should be considered to achieve best results. Excellent build quality and stunning carry case. Highly recommend this lens.
I've been photographing birds and wildlife for about 15 years. Several years ago, I owned the EF 600 f/4L IS. Since it was much too heavy for me to hand-hold when I preferred, it lived on a hefty tripod. I switched from it to Olympus five years ago for equal reach in a much lighter form. I recently decided to get back to Canon for birds and wildlife, so I ordered this lens to use on my R5, both with and without the RF 1.4x. I absolutely love it! It's light enough for me to hand-hold on short hikes, I can mount it on a lighter tripod, the images are sharp, and, of course, it's well built. Beautiful change from my old EF version. I cannot find anything to dislike about it. Well done, Canon!
Does it seem crazy to spend $13,000 on a lens? Yes. But when you take it to the field, you quickly realize that this lens does what lesser lenses are not capable of doing. It is sharp. It captures a lot of light. It doesn't take bird pictures. It takes portraits. Truly amazing results in low light. f/4 lets you drop your ISO or increase your shutter speed, or both. Any way you slice it, the result is amazing photographs.
The quality of pics I've gotten is great, but after taking it out only a few times an inner component broke. I'm coming from an EF 800 mm that stood up to everything I put it through (wildlife photography). I bought this RF 600 mm looking forward to the decreased weight (~3lbs less than the EF 800 mm) but hoping there wouldn't be a sacrifice in quality; perhaps I have that answer now.
If you're serious about your work and want the very best glass available, the RF600 is for you. To take advantage of the reduced weight that comes with mirrorless gear, I added the RF600 to my kit to compliment my EF600, which has served me well for many years. Excellence in every way!
