I was originally going to write a scathing review of this lens. As it turns out, the issue I was having wasn't with the lens at all, it was the software I was using (Lightroom Classic). I was experiencing terrible vignetteing and barrel distortion that was especially noticeable when shooting wide. Lightroom was reading the meta data correctly but was not applying the correct profile in the develop module. Now that I've discovered that, I am totally thrilled with this lens. It is every bit as good as my EF 16-35L that this replaced. Excellent for landscapes and works great for architectural applications as well. I just can't believe I was ready to sell this lens and go back to the EF 16-35L. This lens will be going with me everywhere.

Sharp and nice color just like any other L lenses. Focuses very close. It is not macro but good for flowers and any other larger objects.Uncorrected, there is significant vignetting. Once correction is applied, there is no problem. I do not mind the uncorrected image as I often like to crop to 16:9. The vignetting is off the image and I get a view wider than 14mm. It is ok for some of the shots I take.One negative is there is significant lens breathing.

Have had this lens for a little better than a week now. This lens represents another step in the process to convert all my EF glass to RF. I shot the EF16-35mm f2.8 v ll for several years. It was one of the lens that I used the most. So I think that I'm probably qualified to make a comparison. One of the reasons that I wanted to replace the EF version was that I felt that it wasn't as sharp as I would like. My regular work flow almost always involved sharpening. Now that I have shot with the RF f4 version for a couple of extended shoots, I think that I can provide a useful review. The size difference is nice, so is the weight and filter size. I have used the canon 17-40 mm zoom lens for years. Last year I bought the canon R5 and have been using the 17-40 with the adapter and it's been fine. Recently I decided to purchase a dedicated RF Lens.I read the reviews on this lens and they were mixed, but I have to say this is a fabulous Lens! I have no issues with this lens and I absolutely love it. I love the extra wide view that it gives just those three extra millimeters is amazing. I have no issues processing the images in Lightroom. For whatever reason the exact correct lens doesn't pop up in the correction box one of the lenses on that list works every time. I will also say when you shoot raw that it pops up in the dialogue box every time. If you shoot JPEG's for some reason it doesn't show up exactly ... It's a great focal range and covers about 95 percent of the shots that I want to get. I had a different lens that was 14-24 and hardly ever used it, because that focal range was too specialized. Another great feature is that the lens is very light weight, so on a gimbal it's easier on the battery life than the previous lens I was using (sigma 24-105, f4). I love the image quality, and the look of the lens the wider it gets. I don't mind that it's F4. I also plan on using it on the wide shot when I do live performances, and I'm sure it will come in just as handy giving me the flexibility I need to adjust to ... And correcting for the distortion in the darkroom usually meant cropping to the center, effectively eliminating the wide view we really wanted. Those days are long gone, but the memories still guide me now.Now, for example, the RF 14-35 has little distortion on the edges at 14mm, and the need for correction in Lightroom is very minimal as well.Canon continued the somewhat weird zoom mechanism I have with their RF 15-35 2.8, where 14mm is actually to the left of "center", and neutral is at 20mm. It's more curious than annoying, but worth mentioning.One of my reasons for switching to mirrorless was to get back to the smaller-even if not really lighter-camera bodies I carried for years when shooting film. The R5 finally enticed me to make the plunge, and the RF lenses are uniformly above the EF lenses they replace. Even the non-L RFs I own are excellent lenses, and are far lighter than their L counterpart.I sold my RF 15-35 to buy the 14-35 just for the weight, size and cost savings over the 2.8. The weight of digital is hard to avoid, but I'm succeeding with the smaller L and non-L lenses, and I don't seem to be giving up any quality in the image. By these criteria, Canon seems to be doing a pretty amazing job at design and execution.

But I personally use the lens profile for the RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1, it does great job of removing the vignetting and distortion but crops out very little of the over all image. (Go into Lightroom and toggle on/off the profile correction). The corrections do trim the edges a bit, and I'm not sure if it's still a true 14mm after corrections, or maybe it was even wider before so that the adjusted image lands around 14mm. Regardless, I really have no complaints with most of the zoom range. But where this lens falls down is at 35mm. It is super soft, and features chromatic aberation at 35mm. That niche being a light, compact UWA RF mount zoom. I wanted it to work. I will probably end up with the 15-35 2.8, which I was hoping to avoid due to weight and size. But bottom line is at this price I found the flaws just not worth it. If it ever fell to about $1100, where it's predecessor was priced I might consider it in the future.
I originally rented this lens for a project and then immediately turned around and bought it. For the size, weight, aperture, and performance of this lens it is a real gem. The maximum aperture of F/4 does not bother me for a wide angle lens and I would happily trade one stop of light for the small size and weight advantage. Standard screw on filters will work however I noticed a very slight vignette. A slim screw on filter might not vignette at all. I was using NiSi TrueColor ND with a filter ring adapter.It does rely heavily on software lens correction but it was never a problem for any photo or video I used it for.
