Bought this for my second Cape to Cape hike as the first time I used a very small one man light weight hiking tent during spring. This time I wanted more space inside to keep my gear, a separate fly to help prevent condensation, and something that would hold up to an Autumn hike with likely rain. Whilst a little heavy and bulky to carry for camp-n-hike, I have the luxury of pick up and drop off this time so my Companion Pro will be my base camp! Tested it a few weeks ago on an overnight camp-n-hike with my dog! Happy to say it lived up to all the reviews... very spacious for 1 + fur companion with extra room in the vestibules that I didn’t need. Could fit two slim/small peeps, but if you like to have headroom to sit and get changed in your tent - it’s perfect for 1 ... It was only in the morning when I was packing gear away I realised it was wet under the sleeping mat. All my other gear was dry. In comparison some friends camping an hour away had their tent flood.Cons: Heavy for a single person hiker.I now own a 1 person lightweight hiking tent as well and think I prefer that. Albeit in heavy rain the companion pro is my preference as its more rugged.

This tent is what I expected, a good size for travelling on my own with plenty of space for gear. On the negative side the way the tent opens means water on the outside of the tent can drip inside when getting in and out. It’s very breezy with a cross draught due to the two vestibules so better for warmer climates or summer in Tassie. I won’t be able to use it in late autumn or early spring. I had been tossing up between this and the Explore Planet Earth Spartan 2 tent and think it would have suited me better. Still will be a good grab and go tent for summer.

This “Companion Pro Hiker 2 Tent” is the 3rd 2 person hiking tent I have used in the last 12 months for multi-night hiking so I think I can give it a reasonable evaluation/comparison. The other 2 tents were by Marmot and Oztrail and were 3 and 2 times (respectively) more expensive than the Companion, but there are tradeoffs. The most positive features of the Companion are its cheap price and its roominess, the negatives include its weight and quality of materials and finish. As mentioned the price of around $150 for the Companion is extremely attractive. The internal space of the erect tent is by far the most of the tents I’ve used recently. The gear pockets at each end of the tent encourage you to sleep in a head to tail arrangement that may not be to everyone’s liking. Erection of the tent is quick but the quite long lengths of the poles means that it can be difficult in a confined area. Downsides to this tent include its relatively heavy weight. It depends on how long you are trekking for and what other gear you are carrying but I found that for a 3 night trek it was fine, if going for longer I might have opted for one of the lighter weight tents and used the bonus for carrying extra food. I felt that the zips on the Companions inner flyscreen were not as smooth in operation as the more expensive tents and that they were on the ‘light’ side and may be more prone to breakage however only time will tell me that. There were also some minor stitching issues with many spare threads and some stitching coming very close to the edges of the seams. I haven’t yet used this Companion tent in the rain so cannot comment on its performance under that circumstance. Condensation inside was noticeable but not really more significant in the other brand tents being used by others in my trekking group. The fly sheets doors can be chosen to be fixed open in different configurations to help manage this issue. My recommendation is that this tent is generally fine for a 2-3 night hike, but if going on a longer duration hike where all up weight could be an issue then it would be worthwhile investigating a lighter tent even if it means spending a few hundred $ more.

In the early part of that time, we were in drought, so not much rain on it, but a lot of cool to cold weather, and it was quite comfortabel. Have been using it more in the last 18 months, with some mighty heavy storms, and absolutely no water inside. I do use a footprint, but that is to protect the floor, from rough ground. The Oxford Denier floor does not leak at all. I got to experience the wettest, night 4 nights ago, getting 2. and a half inches over 5 hours. Not wet inside at all. I use this tent for car camping as well as bicycle touring, so the weight does not affect me. When it is raining I cook in the quite large vestibules, which helps a lot.. I am shocked by the quality of this tent! Material, zips, fly, rope... all impeccable. I have owned this tent for about 1.5yrs and used it approx. 30-40 nights. A few nights below 0c and a few nights in heavy rain with no issues. Fits 2 adults pretty comfortably. So breathable on warm nights. Cons - Bit heavy for hiking - Fly could be 10cm longer to cover base and better protect in rain.

The little vestibules each side are handy, entry on either side and the top mesh basket is a great bonus addition. Its light and small when packed. Bang for buck, you will not find a tent of this quality and weight at this price. Its plainly proven its worth and durability over time and is popular, on a recent bike trip there was more than one of these being used, including to my surprise a guy I was travelling with! He loves it and his is nearly 10 years old. Thats my brand new one at the front, his exactly the same at the back. I love a tent that 'just works' For biker types tossing up between a swag or tent, this one, with a good bag and mattress (I use an Exped synmat and a Roman -5, both avaiable here at Snowys ) will give you more room for you and gear on a rainy night and the whole lot will pack up smaller than any swag, and in smaller seperate bundles for packing.
Super easy to setup, affordable and durable. Very keen to see how it holds up in wet weather, but so far we're loving it. Bought as an addition to our kit as my partner doesn't really like the swag. It's much smaller so it means we have more room when we pack . I did manage to bend a peg already but I think I hit a root. Already used the repair kit on a tent pole for someone else that snapped last trip too lol

I bought that one on a whim and it immediately became my main tent! This is the exact tent though. I've contacted the manufacturer, given how good it has been. I've slept in mine over 100 nights when sailing and travelling and several times in atrocious rain. The only time it has leaked was when the vents were propped open during a downpour and a drip came from the area of the base of one prop. It's a bit heavy for one person to carry but there is genuine room for two people so you can split the weight. It's stable and strong - it didn't bend all night in 30 knots in Tasmania in 2017! When I finally kill mine, I am simply buying another one.
I have used the Pro hiker 2 hiking tent 4-5 times so far. Although I'm not very sure how long the mesh flaps are going to last, I am really happy with the overall performance of the tent. It was surprisingly good during the 3-4 days of continuous heavy rain last summer in Wilsons Prom (the gazebo overhead helped; but one side of the tent was completely exposed to the rain).Definitely not for very cold weather unless you have really good sleeping bags.I would highly recommend it, especially for a beginner.
