Corroded in less than 10 months

I bought two BG MG 18000 for a two week surf fishing trip in Mexico May 2022. Used them everyday with fresh water rinse nightly. Final cleaning after the trip and found both had corroded to the point where you can’t crank the reels. The chamber doesn’t have a strong seal and the results are I now have two paper weights. I brought my Shimano Saragosa on the same trip and that reel is just fine as if new. The BGs are less costly but require much more comprehensive maintenance than the Shimano reels.

Defective Daiwa BG4500 Spinning Reels

I have many Daiwa spinning reels and I've always been more than satisfied with the quality and reliability but I was very disappointed with their BG4500 ones. My first order came with a defective bail. It wouldn't automatically close and it was hard to turn the handle to close it but once it was closed then the handle worked fine. I contacted customer service and I had another new one shipped and it had the exact same problem.

Fantastic Reel for the many large sized species of saltwater fish I go after.

I live on the coast of Georgia and fish for everything from speckled seatrout to 250 lb blacktip sharks. This reel handled our East Coast Snapper season very well easily bringing up large red snapper off the bottom some 90 feet down and a couple of cobia. I loaded the reel with 80lb braid and attached to a heavy duty Daiwa rod. I bought this reel to replace a Daiwa of similar size for casting to sharks and tarpon. I'm confident I'll be able to use this reel for years to come. Handle will switch from left to right.

Great Reel with True Grit
14 April 2022

Caught my first bluefin, a 55 pounder, on a BG 4500 last August off Catalilna Island, and the reel barely broke a sweat. Even after a long soak, I had plenty of line -- and smooth, powerful drag -- to land the truly beautiful fish in about 15 minutes. Impressive. But then I should not have been surprised. I'd caught yellowfin to 35lbs on this reel with no problem whatsoever before the bluefin trip. Liked the 4500 so much I bought a 6500. Can't beat the price and the quality. A BG will be a regular part of my arsenal this season for throwing bait or lures on kelp patties for yellowtail and school-sized tuna. Highly recommend the BG line.

Incredible Reel, Nice Price Point
11 June 2022

Amazing spool for an incredible price! The body is well made, it is not overly heavy, and it reels so smooth. Handle is ambidextrous. Wonderful value at its price point. I got the BG5000 for my 10’ surf rod and I would definitely recommend this product in any of its sizes. Note: you must flip the bail down after casting as turning the handle will not flip it down for you. This wasn’t that big of a deal to me as it’s supposed to be better to manually flip the bail anyways!

Not Happy after 3 days.
8 May 2022

First day of owning this reel, It felt a little rough but figured it would smooth itself out. after another two days of light fishing and 2 Saugeye under 20 inches, it feels slightly worse than the reel I was trying to replace. Is not smooth on retrieval and the roughness has itself worsened. I am planning to return this real. I had high hopes for it being priced the way it was and I am honestly extremely disappointed. The gears itself feel like they are beginning to fall apart internally.

Thought I would save some $ and get a cheap reel with great specs. I got the BG5000 and within a year the line roller bearing seized. I ordered replacements and it turns out the entire line roller and bearings have corroded together. Soaked them in penetrating oil and couldn't get them apart. I have 10 year old shimanos that I never serviced and work like new. Save your money. Oh, and its made of flimsy plastic.

Still s solid reel in 2022
26 December 2022

This model BG has been around since 2016, so it’s no spring chicken and Daiwa hasn’t discontinued it yet for good reason. It’s an excellent value for money heavy duty reel a this price point. You get a smooth and solid heavy duty reel with an all aluminium body. My only caution to buyers is to be aware that this model still uses Daiwa’s old sizing system, if you’re unsure you’ll need to look up the equivalent sizes. For example this 5000 size is equivalent to a 10000 in the new size.

Very solid reel!

I opted for the Daiwa BG reel to replace an older Quantum Energy PT30. i got the BG 2500 size. It is just a tad bit smaller than the Quantum but a heck of a lot lighter. I saw some reviews about the bail not being thick enough or doesn’t click loud. I’m not finding that at all. I kind of like the lighter size bail, however I am only throwing in freshwater river lakes and streams. The reel is super smooth with no wobble reeling. I am able to retrieve a lot faster than the old Quantum as well. Overall, I feel the the Daiwa is a slight step above the Quantum Energy. They are mostly the same with the exception on weight, retrieve, and body material. The reel hold the same type of line. 6,8,and 10 lb mono BUT you can put more line on the Daiwa reel than the Quantum. Dicks will throw out out a $20 off coupon for orders of $100 so I jumped on their deal along with their free shipping and I got the reel super fast fast in 2 days!! This is better than amazon if you don’t have Prime!!Dicks made it easy for me me to make up my mind on the Daiwa since I was going to get the Pflueger President in the same size, and low and behold that same day I get the $20 off coupon in the mail!! Thank you Dicks for your great timing and the great shipping service for free. I will definitely look into getting a new rod with them soon

Wont buy any different reel

I bought a 3000 over 3 years ago and shortly after that bought a 2500. I’ve caught everything under the sun on them from dinky croakers in the surf to 25” stripers with plenty of 20+ inch trout and upper slot redfish in between. The biggest thing I like about this reel is the durability. I’ve owned several shimanos in the same price range and none of them have lasted me as long as these bgs. The drag adjustment is up there with reels 200$ above its class. I’ve dunked it in saltwater on a few occasions and just made sure to take the spool off when rinsing it off and had no issues. All around great reel. 2500 pairs well with my fenwick hmg medium light and 3000 does great on my fenwick hmg medium. I’ve swapped with a friends Penn battle which fits in the same class ... MoreI bought a 3000 over 3 years ago and shortly after that bought a 2500.
