Delonghi La Specialista Maestro Black Coffee Machine EC9665BM
The DeLonghi La Specialista is both semi-automatic and semi-professional. Enjoy playing barista while trusting in the machine’s consistent grinding, dosing, and tamping. The La Specialista’s grinding process relies on sensors to ensure you’re grinding the right amount of coffee each time. Once you’ve ground your coffee, push on the side lever for a precise tamp that will help you achieve a more consistent flavour profile. The unit brews with a stable temperature and, thanks to two independent heating systems, there’ll be no wait between extracting your shot and steaming your milk. The Advanced Latte System gives you the choice of a flat or fluffy foam, and there are preset options for Coffee, Espresso, and Americano. Combining smart automation with a touch of hands-on interaction, the matte black DeLonghi La Specialista will deliver quality coffee in your very own home, time and time again. Sensor Grinding Technology This machine features a built-in grinder, and it’s been engineered to deliver a consistent dosage of coffee each time. You don’t have to worry about making a mess, as the grinding is done internally. Smart Tamping Station An improper tamp of your coffee grounds can result in under- or over-extraction of your espresso. That is, water will not pass through the grounds evenly and your coffee will either be too bitter or too weak. This machine tamps automatically and precisely with the push of the side lever. Independent heating systems Having separate systems for heating water and milk means you’ll get a consistent temperature with every cup. It also means you can get straight onto steaming milk after you’ve pulled your espresso shot. Advanced Latte System The machine’s steam wand allows you to select a FLAT option for hot milk or a FOAM option for frothed milk. Whether you prefer a latte or a cappuccino, the La Specialista will deliver.

Unreliable and poor performing. This machine was great for the first 2 months, then it failed intermittently thereafter. DeLonghi have a repair process and refuse to provide a replacement/refund until they have deemed the machine completely un-repairable. Do not recommend the company for its poor warranty (they will continue to ‘fix’ the problem until warranty runs out).

The machine is good. Dialing-in takes patience and a lot of trial and error. Once you figure out the settings for your beans you're using. The steamer wand could be stronger & the grinder could be improved - hard to clean. Overall it makes a great coffee & I would recommend the machine.

The machine produces great coffees. Couple of down sides - the water tank is at the back so if you have above bench cupboards you need to pull the whole machine out to get to the tank. The other thing is on quite a few occasions we have had the coffee grounds get stuck in the machine after the hot water has passed through. Other than that its a great machine. Would be good to learn more about the various settings to see what it can really do.

Im very happy with the Delonghi La Specialista Maestro. It was very easy to learn to use and it makes a great cup of coffee very quickly. I like the automatic milk frother and can set the machine going, walk away for a few minutes then come back to a great brew.
Let's go through the process of making a coffee. Firstly, the grinding and tamping process is good. This system helps to maintain a constant grind, and volume of ground coffee in the filter. The tamping process is reasonable. I found that after tamping, you need to return the tamping lever to the beginning position, and tamp again before polishing the grind. This is because upon returning the lever after the initial tamping, it drops some residual coffee grind on top of what has been tamped. And therefore a further tamping is required. This is however, a minor issue. The brewing process is effective, leaving a nice crema on top of your shot of coffee. I normally drink black coffee and this brew is fine. This is however, a minor issue. The brewing process is effective, leaving a nice crema on top of your shot of coffee. I normally drink black coffee and this brew is fine. I normally need to dilute mine with hot water. However, if you want a milk coffee, this is where the design of the machine could do with some improvement. Firstly, when one is about to steam milk, the process is to clear the steam wand with a shot of steam. So you turn the steam knob, wait about 10 secs for steam to come out. I then need to stop the shot of steam by turning the knob fully back to the start. And then wait another 10 secs before I can commence steaming with the wand touching the milk . Let me admit that I am not a barista, but I have successfully steamed milk using other machines. But it is extremely difficult to get velvety smooth steamed milk with this machine. The steam pressure does not seem to be great, and whether that is the main factor, or whether it is the fact that the nozzle of the wand has three holes which effectively shoot steam in conflicting directions within the milk. This makes it hard to get the desired vortex in the milk during the steaming process. The end result is not perfect milk. There is a little bit of frothed milk on top of the jug, but just watery milk below, and not the aeration throughout the milk that one strives for. Once the milk is at the desired temperature, turning off the steaming wand needs to be done prior to withdrawing the wand from your milk. This then necessitates another 10 second wait before you can steam clean the wand. Hmm, a lot of time wasted here, whilst you try to keep the milk as active as possible.Of course with only one boiler, one cannot brew and steam simultaneously. So, if you have brewed your coffee prior to steaming the milk, then your shot of coffee has probably lost it's premium crema and temperature. And conversely, if you have steamed the milk prior to brewing your coffee, then you will need to work hard to keep the milk textured in the jug whilst you brew your shot into the coffee cup.All in all, the machine seems to be working against you. But wait there's more, the machine permits (and promotes) the making of double shots. Again here, whilst steaming enough milk for 2 coffees, a timer shuts down the steaming process prior to the milk reaching optimal temperature. What happens here, well you wait another 10 seconds to commence the steaming process again.I reiterate, I am not a trained barista. However, I have taken the machine to my local coffee shop, and asked their barista to show me how to use this machine. He too struggled, and said he thought the apparent lack of pressure and the three holes in the nozzle were the main factors. Furthermore, there is a professional review on the web of this machine, and she failed to obtain decent textured milk too.Changing focus, the Latte Crema system is great for my wife. She does not have the same focus on making coffee as I do. The Latte Crema system is easy to use, and makes a coffee with frothed milk on top. This suits my wife and the friends she makes coffee for. But I haven't gotten nice textured milk from the Latte Crema system. In conclusion, in my layperson opinion, this machine is good if want black coffee, or for the non serious latte drinkers from the Latte Crema. But it is disappointing if you are trying to create nice textured milk.
Completely stopped working after a couple of months. After Googling I found a number of people having the same issue with no solution. Very disappointed as it was not a cheap machine. I have the older version for years which was wonderful, but it seems things have gone backwards with their developments. I'm returning it. I would not recommended this product.
We’ve had coffee machines for 15 years. The La Specialista Maestro is by far is the best machine we have purchased. Easy to use once you get the grind and dosage set to your liking. A 250mL double shot Latte is perfection! The LatteCrema system conbines choice and simplicity. A stylish machine for the home, that’s a must for coffee lovers.
I did a lot of research before buying, so I had my head around how this machine worked beforehand. It took a couple of days to get the right brew for our tastes, but once accomplished, I’d never look back. The latte system is a fantastic feature on this machine, giving the choice of a manual steam wand or an automatic milk froth system. It’s fun to use, easy to clean, looks beautiful in our kitchen and makes superb espresso coffee.
Just like the title, I had trouble with the coffee dosage levels and tampering it too hard or softly. It took me about a week x 3 coffees a day to finally master it, and it brews delicious flat whites. I use the milk texturing method manually but when I have visitors the automatic milk texturer is so helpful it’s like working with a barista!
What I can only hope is one amazing coffee machine is yet to arrive. I have a friend that has one that is a couple levels below this one and his is awesome so I can’t wait to have mine and make some even better coffees. We can all hope that he has coffee envy once I receive mine. But I will have to wait and see as Aus Post seem to have send this item by a mule and I guess it’s a long walk from Melbourne to Brisbane. Here’s hoping it arrives soon surely 4 weeks is enough time to deliver it? I feel sorry for everyone that is putting up with my coffee withdrawals.
