Awesome little tool

The DeWalt 20v SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer is a wickedly handy too to have on hand. I have a 21lb SDS-Max jackhammer and a DW 20v hammer drill and have long wished I had something between the two. This rotary hammer fits the bill almost perfectly. It is an easy layout and offers drilling, percussive drilling, and chipping hammer. It's easy to hold horizontally or above one's shoulders, and - probably most importantly - it's cordless. There are two major points I'd draw your attention to. The first is a negative: since the tool is a drill it is, necessarily, variable speed; the downside to this is that you end up with a variable speed chipping hammer, which takes a lot of getting used to. If you aren't used to jackhammers this may not be an issue but for me at least it's ... MoreThe DeWalt 20v SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer is a wickedly handy too to have on hand. I could force a battery into place, but a few times of doing that will surely split the rails off either the battery or the tool. Also, when I opened the box the entire tool was covered in a layer of oil. I'm used to having to wipe down some of the metal bits which are often covered in a protective layer of oil or grease as a moisture barrier, but in this case the whole tool... plastic bits and rubber grip alike, were covered in a heavy layer of oil. Being unable to insert a batter pretty much guarantees it would last forever!Poor QA checks, Dewalt. :-(

I feel for my few home projects it will do fine. quality built and easy to handle. I would definitely recommend for DIY projects and probably would do well on light construction.

Extremely satisfied with this purchase!
26 September 2019

I needed to install six "No Dig 4-in x 4-in Powder-Coated Wood To Steel Bases" (Lowe's Item # 53421 Model # 832685O) onto concrete slabs, which required drilling 24 holes 3/8" x 3-1/2" into the slabs. I bought a good masonry bit (Tapcon 3/8-in x 8-in Carbide Masonry Drill Bit for SDS-Plus Drill; Lowe's Item # 773193 Model # 11494) and attached it to my trusty, 19-year-old Craftsman 1/2" hammer drill. Well, I worked on the holes for the first base for about an hour, and only got 3 of the holes completely drilled, and the 4th hole halfway, before I quit.So I did some research on the web and learned about rotary hammer drills. I already own four DeWalt 20V tools -- very satisfied with them all -- so I purchased this drill, despite some reservations based on the 1-star review posted on 6/11/2019). I also picked up a 2nd bit, just in case I had already worn out the first one.I loaded the first bit into the DeWalt drill, took a deep breath, and started work on the holes for the 2nd base. To my amazement, I had drilled the first hole in about 30 seconds! It took me less time to drill the remaining 20 holes than it did to drill the first 4 with my old drill. All using the same bit, all on less than a single battery charge (20V Max XR 4 amp). Whenever I encountered a hard spot, I just switched the drill to hammer mode, worked the spot for a few seconds, then returned to hammer drill mode, and finished the hole. (The drill has 3 modes: rotary drill, rotary hammer drill and non-rotary hammer).I'm extremely satisfied with this purchase, and wish I had bought it sooner!

Good small SDS drill
24 December 2021

I have two larger corded SDS plus hammers and a corded SDS Max, so I was hesitant to purchase a 20v version because of the sheer power needed for the things you do with these. However, I had a situation come up where I needed cordless (generator in the shop and no power at site), so I purchased this unit, and man was I surprised. While I wouldn’t use for something suited to a much larger tool, it is powerful, and the hammer action is very aggressive. It has become my go-to tool for drilling small holes in concrete, which I must do surprisingly often, because of the convenience and because it does every bit as good a job as my small corded one. If you are still using a hammer drill, get one of these. Be ready with batteries, though, as it drains batteries like it chews through concrete… fast. Flexvolt are best. The pictures are of a 3/8 threaded rod through a 12” thick block and brick wall and the slab bolts on my new Toughsystem racks.

Great tool for it's size

I have a 60v version. The largest one this site was selling. But the SDS Max Is just too big or heavy for certain jobs. Like peeling plaster off lath above your head. So I went ahead and ordered this.. Obviously I can peel a whole wall in a few minutes like I was with his big brother. Although I still feel like it does a decent job for being so small and light. With a little patience it gets the job done. I also use it for drilling any masonry that requires less than a 1/2 hole. I'm sure it will handle larger holes but I have not tried. I really think for most people's needs this will get the job done. That being said I just removed 900 sq feet of tile. I would say you need a much larger rotary and I recommend the 60v for serious contactors. I did however use this ... MoreI have a 60v version. The largest one this site was selling. As stated in other reviews. I'll try it out soon and update this if I remember.

Great tool for the price!

Really enjoyed the tool, it was smaller than I expected but still very powerful and easy to use. I mostly used the hammer setting to remove tile from a small bathroom. Very easy to use and very little fatigue which I’m sure it has to do with the size. If you’re looking to do big areas with tiles than I highly recommend upgrading to a hammer drill that accepts SDS Max bits. It’ll make it so much easier!

Powerful but power hungry (eats through batteries)
7 May 2023

I used this tool to break up underground rocks for installing t-posts (paired with a 30 inch bit). It worked great for that purpose for the most part. Plenty of power. I also appreciate that it has three modes (drill only, hammer and drill, and hammer only). The downside is that this tool is power hungry and eats through batteries. For example, I was able to drill only one hole per battery amp hour (i.e., a 6 amp hour battery lasted me six holes). That was a bit of a headache since I ate through many batteries very quickly

SDS-Plus Mini Jack Hammer
12 April 2023

I just got this email asking for another review, so here goes.First of all know, be advised that this is SDS-Plus, not SDS-Max as the description says.Second - If you are doing demolition on Lath and Plaster, this is a great option. I have a 1 inch dowel I use to pry the lath and plaster away from the Studs, and I use this as the persuaider to get the things that give me trouble. The Chip fetting on this seesntually makes it a mini jack hammer, and it's feirce.Good luck.

Worth Every Penny

I bought this as I needed to drill 15 5/8 inch x 8 inch hole into concrete to set anchors for my shed. This drill did an amazing job and quick job. It probably only took 30-60 seconds to drill each hole and almost made the job enjoyable!!! I was using 6AH XR battery and I was able to do about 12 holes before the battery gave out and needed to be recharged. I think if you are doing a decent sized job and are drilling more than a few small holes, I wouldn't want to use anything less than a 4AH battery with this tool.I was also looking at the Dewalt DCH273 but couldn't figure out why that tool is $130 more and is less powerful then this DCH133. This tool will get the job done with ease and if you are already in the Dewalt tool battery family it's almost a no brainer!!
