I purchased this at a big box store after my previous Dewalt 18v drill started to drill crooked holes. I am very pleased with this upgrade! The drill runs very smoothly in all three speeds and has plenty of power. It's not suitable for automotive work, but it's not intended for that either. The metal chuck is a nice touch, but the finish on the chuck is not very durable at all. Having had the drill for a few months, the finish on the chuck is already showing wear under very light use (hobbyist woodworker). I suspect it will start rusting, based on the experience of others. The LED is a nice feature as well, but hasn't been needed much. Battery life is great! I have the 2.0AH batteries and I often go 10 days without swapping. Overall, I give this drill 4 stars. I took one away for the chuck finish and bit storage. As always, I am very satisfied with my dewalt drill, and would recommend them over and over again!

I finally spent the money on some real deal tools and bought the 996 in a combo kit with the 885 impact driver. The first thing I noticed was a more than expected drill bit wobble in this drill. I tried multiple bits including Dewalt bits. Still same amount of wobble. It seemed that the head of the drill had wobble consistent with the end of the drill bit. Not being real familiar with cordless drills and this being the first one I have owned I accepted it. Fast forward about 1 month and I was drilling some 1/4" holes in some aluminum L brackets. I removed the bit when I was finished and the chuck came to a stop and would not budge. I tried everything I could without actually opening up the drill. It would not budge. I was embarrassed to tell them what happened. I do not have the time to send this to Dewalt and wait for it to be fixed and returned because I am in the middle of working on my only fixer upper home that is not yet fixed up enough to live in. So, I need a drill now, not in 3 weeks. So I went back to Lowes and I was literally at day 87 of ownership. They allowed me to return it with manager approval, but I had to return the entire kit with everything in it the way it was purchased. Since the kit was no longer $299 and now more expensive, the manager had to do some fancy register work to enable a new purchase of the same kit at that price. Yes, I stuck with Dewalt. I did it because they are supposed to be the best. I figured I would give them another chance and maybe I just got unlucky. Thanks to Lowe's really for figuring this out. I hope Dewalt reads this and customer relations gets back to me. The problem is solved for now, but it would be nice to hear from them. So far the new drill has been fine but barely tested. There is still wobble but it is less.

It seems well-built. And includes useful features. However, my last DeWalt hammer drill stopped working properly (I had to keep removing and reinstalling the battery to keep it working for more than 15 minutes). The DeWalt-authorized repair shop wanted $120 to repair it. Since I still had the batteries, I purchased a "bare-tool" replacement. Had I not had the batteries, I would have purchased a different brand.

Starting with the bad. Keep in mind i don't like this drill and I'm rating it 4 stars of 5. The missing star is because it's Achilles heel. I'll talk about that first so you don't do it. NEVER EVER EVER run the drill at high load AND run the batteries dead. You can do one or the other (it's never suggested to run lithium ion dead) but not both it'll cook your drill. There's no thermal or over-current protection. The motor takes the abuse perfectly and wasn't even hot on disassembly. But the ESC can't. How do you avoid this? If you're running high load (ie 8in SDS screws in 3rd gear), the drill handles it fine (why i rate it so highly) BUT!!! As soon as the battery goes to 1 bar, grab the battery on the charger, cool the discharged battery with a vacuum or blower (it ... MoreStarting with the bad. If you're running high load (ie 8in SDS screws in 3rd gear), the drill handles it fine (why i rate it so highly) BUT!!! As soon as the battery goes to 1 bar, grab the battery on the charger, cool the discharged battery with a vacuum or blower (it will be too hot to start charging) for about 20sec right at the terminals, place discharged battery on charger, continue working with the fully charged battery as the used one charges. I ran this drill for days driving 5-8in SDS, extreme abuse like this, and it ran perfect. Amazingly powerful and durable. But, i lent it to a coworker to do the same. He ran the first battery dead, ran the second battery dead, and the drill was dead after the second battery. To avoid killing your drill under high load, stop using the batteries as soon as they get to one bar.Now for the good. Avoid the Achilles heel and it's an amazing drill. The electronic "clutch" is AMAZING!!! the main reason this drill scored so high with me. I'm used to mechanical clutches from older drills that make the ratchet noise when they reach the torque spec of the torque setting. Driving regular screws, you can dial in the clutch to stop at the correct time. You will have to come back with the impact to touch up some of the screws but driving 8in SDS screws in 3rd gear then coming back with the 1/4in impact for a few that are between 1/8in-2in out vs burning up an impact or slowly throttling a corded drill, it's amazing and 3-4 times faster that corded or an impact.Another plus is the sheer torque this puts out. I STRONG discourage anyone from using the drill bit setting in 1st gear without the side handle. The amount of torque this drill has in 1st will snap three 1/4in shaft on a nut driver. Driving #4 Phillips screws 3-5in long, i needed length and stepped ther bit holder from 5/16in to 1/4in and snapped the 1/4in shaft. And not at the skinny part of the shaft that was on the chuck. Ther actual hex 1/4in shaft. Oops. So, learn to not run batteries below 2 bars (gets to one bar, charge it) and the drill will take as much abuse as you can throw at it. This is actually what you're supposed to do with any lithium ion/ lithium polymer batteries and Nickle Cadmium batteries. So this isn't just a Dewalt Achilles heel. But you buy such a heavy duty drill, think it can handle anything, and find this out, you'll be upset like myself. Don't make that mistake and you'll be amazed with this drill. It basically cuts the cord for drills.Picture was to find the failure point. Motor is perfect. It was the ESC (the electronics in the white caulking behind the trigger). Definitely going to rebuild this when i can get another ESC.
Bought this Brushless hammer drill January 2020 to replace two older brushed models that finally gave up the ghost ( 5 plus years old). I am a die hard Dewalt person. You open up my truck boxes and all you see is yellow and black. Well yesterday I was using the drill on a home project and the drill started making a funny grinding, popping noise while drilling in torque/speed 2 setting. Well a short time later it quit. Locked up tight. Will not go forward or reverse. Something to do the gearing/torque setting. Its stuck in torque/speed 2 setting and will not switch to 1 or 3. I am very disappointed that this drill only lasted 10 months. I bought this thinking I would have a good drill for years to come. Lowes only exchanges up to 90 days and they only can look up ... MoreBought this Brushless hammer drill January 2020 to replace two older brushed models that finally gave up the ghost ( 5 plus years old). I'm hoping they will replace and not repair. I need a working drill on the truck and don't want to wait on a repair facility- days or even weeks. A few years ago I needed to install a few concrete anchors outside my home in Atlanta. My Hammer Drill from the big box store just didn't cut the mustard. But my DeWalt made short work of the holes I needed to install the anchore in that concrete. So I was understandably skeptical of this "compact" series of hammer/drills and their ability to do the same job as my larger and older DeWalt hammer drill. Earlier this year I bought the compact drill driver for a project and I fell in love with the compact drill. I researched the specifications for torque and speed and decided to give the compact hammer drill a try. Earlier this year I bought the compact drill driver for a project and I fell in love with the compact drill. I researched the specifications for torque and speed and decided to give the compact hammer drill a try. Well, soon after I got my hammer drill, I once again had a need to drill into concrete to anchor my compressor in my shop. There were three tie points, so I tried my older hammer drill on one, and then tried this so-called compact hammer drill. The rest is history. I finished the other two anchor points in record time with this GIANT of a compact hammer drill. I am sold on DeWalt tools and the ATOMIC Series- the drill/driver as well as the hammer-drill are both outstanding products and are only small in stature- not skills or capabilities. You cannot go wrong with this product. Now- if, as some have written here, I am disappointed in the durability of this hammer drill, I will amend this review. I am not a contractor so I do not use my hammer drill 10 hours a day 6 days a week- unless, that is, I am working on a project around my place here in Florida. But three DIY projects later and I am still overwhelmingly impressed with this so-called compact hammer drill. It must have short-mans disease! Much tougher and more capable than it would appear to have!
I bought the dcd996b about a month ago from Home Depot. I had it shipped to the Home Depot store. I saw the box was banged up on all four corners when I picked it up. I went ahead and accepted the box without any complaints since I had already waited about a week to get it. I have a dcd791 and I wanted the 996 for heavy duty drilling and concrete. On the second use the forward and reverse button broke and loosely moved back and forth. I returned the drill to Home Depot for an exchange, they had one there but the box had been written all over, obviously by someone at Home Depot. I asked what all the writing was and did it signify it was a drill that had been returned. I was assured it was a brand new unopened drill. I asked what all the writing was and did it signify it was a drill that had been returned. I was assured it was a brand new unopened drill. I got home pulled the drill out of the box and immediately noticed that there was hardly any movement between reverse and lock button, since that was the first thing I inspected. It was almost stuck between reverse and lock. If you lightly press the button it locked, but there is no movement. I was afraid the button was going to break just like the drill I had returned. The bigger issue with this drill is the speed selector would not switch to number 3, I only had speeds 1 and 2. I messed with the drill a little bit and got it to switch into 3, but now it won't go back into 1, I only have speeds 2 and 3. I called Dewalt last week to get their advice on where I can buy a 996 drill that's not defective. The morning I called I held on the phone for several minutes and finally chose the call back option that the Dewalt recording kept repeating over and overThe automated voice did not like me holding for them and was pressuring me into doing this. Sad thing is I never received a call back from DeWalt, so I called again on my lunch break and held for about 30 minutes before hanging up. I then emailed DeWalt that evening when I got off work and explained the situation with both drills and that nobody had called me back after choosing the call back option. It's the following week that I'm receiving this review and I've still not heard back from DeWalt. I just now sent another email today asking if somebody could at least respond to me. I've got a third 996 drill that's being shipped to me now so hopefully there's no problems with this drill. What's funny is I have about 10 DeWalt XR tools and the new 996 drill I'm trying to get is the only one that says Made in the USA (put together in the USA) and it's the only Dewalt tool I've had to buy multiple tools before getting a good one. Hopefully I will hear something back from DeWalt. If you buy this drill make sure you check it over real good and remember you got 90 days to make sure you're satisfied with it.
I was a little jaded about buying a hammer drill/drill combo; I've bought 3-4 of them previously. They are all used solely as a drill now. They just don't seem to have what it takes to drill in cured concrete; not even 5/32" or 3/16" holes. I do have the Corded Hammer Drills and also the Dewalt SDS Shank Cordless 20V DCH273B (Incredible tool by the way). But I was looking for something that could drill a 3/16" hole without carrying two tools to do the job of drilling holes and driving concrete screws. I found it!!! I think it is the 3 speed transmission in this drill that sets it apart. Frankly, I was blown away by how fast it drilled 3/16" holes 4" deep in 15b year old 3000psi concrete floors. Not sure how it would handle 5/16", 3/8" or 1/2" holes but for bits up ... MoreI was a little jaded about buying a hammer drill/drill combo; I've bought 3-4 of them previously. It does not have the production of a SDS shanked hammer drill, but that's not why I bought it anyway. I bought it for convenience on small hole applications. This tool is a step up, three or four steps up, from the previous hammer drill-drill combo tool put on the market previously.
I have now owned 3 of these. The only reason I’m on number 3, is because the first two were stolen. This drill has not let me down, and I use it every day. The variable speed and adjustments give it range from delicate, to aggressive. 3/4” holes 8” deep in concrete, was able to do 60 without a battery swap. 2.5” holes through block, last all day and performed just as well as the corded Bosch, but easier to use thanks to being cordless and lighter. The all metal chuck is great. I have dropped it countless times from a ladder, used it on exterior jobs in the rain and snow, temps well below freezing, but every time I pick it up, it just works. Of all the major brands, this has been my favorite, and continues to impress me. The only improvement I would like to see, is ... MoreI have now owned 3 of these. The drill has not failed me, but I have snapped half a dozen handles, albeit in conditions exceeding recommendation. I have bought 3, and will continue to purchase this product.
My drill is only about 2 years old and I have used it a handful of times for simple stuff. It has only seen hard work(drilling concrete with a 3/8 bit) a couple of times. The chuck decided not to release a bit anymore. So I got a free lable and sent it back to dewalt only to have them tell me they are not going to cover it because its over 1 year old. I was unsure as I feel this is not normal wear and tear. Yet I was more or less ok with it. They sold me the chuck over the phone so I could repair it myself. Only to call the next day and say they couldnt find the part. So I got the part number and order the same exact thing. I got the drill back and it didnt look like they even opend it to inspect it before determining they wouldnt fix it.After some research turns ... MoreMy drill is only about 2 years old and I have used it a handful of times for simple stuff. If you do you manage you cant rescure it properly. At this point ill just have to buy another drill and im not sure if I can return the chuck from where I bought it so I might be out another 30 dollars. Why would you offer a part number for something that I may not be able to remove(wouldnt come off for me) and that I cannot install corecctly that would lead to future failure. I have a few thousand in dewalt tools and now I am starting to regret that. Thought this was a great company. As a contractor these things could mess up a whole job and affect my income. I cannot afford unreliable tools from an unreliable manufacturer.
