Tool works great! Only problem, it sprays wood chips ALL OVER the place. For some reason, Dewalt does not include a chip catcher. They are available for $30-$35, so why not. Great tool, but poor planning by Dewalt. I used it to level floor joists and rafters. Worked great - except all the wood chips sprayed all over the place!!

So far so good. It left a smooth surface on a piece of popular I was making for a sign. Well balance even with a 6 ah battery on it. Nice to have no cord attached to it. Dislike no dust bag for the price you should include ? one. All other brands include a dust bag. I bought this one because I have several Dewalt batteries did not want to purchase another battery and charger for another brand.

And best of all, I enjoy the light weight, which makes it easier to guide the unit, even when reaching over to trim a longer piece. It made chamfering the corner of a 4 x 4 effortless (see picture).A fence was also included, to use for making rabbet cuts. I had never used a fence on a planer for this purpose before, but after giving it a try (see picture) I can see a number of uses for this in cabinet construction, and other decorative things. The adjustment knobs, and trigger were easy to see and access (see picture), and a small plastic “kickstand” at the rear shoe (see picture) suspends the blade from surfaces when at rest. The front and main handles were comfortable to grip. The one item that was not included was a dust bag. If you’ve ever used a planer, you know that after just a short period of use, you can easily fill a small bucket with wood chips and sawdust, so I’m not sure why the manufacturer expects that you should come prepared to use a broom and dustpan. And although I wouldn’t be keen on attaching my vacuum to the chip ejection port, it didn’t fit anyway. Attachment to a vacuum defeats the very reason for using this battery powered tool – which is the flexibility of not being tethered to a cord or hose. Every power planer I’ve ever purchased came with a dust bag included. At the time I write this, I am unable to locate a dust bag to fit this planer, either for purchase domestically online or at a bricks and mortar location. Call me crazy. The 3-year tool warranty is a plus, with the standard exclusions for normal wear and tool abuse. I think this tool will hold up very well for the long term. This is a great little machine, but I would be reluctant to recommend it to a friend until/unless a dust bag is either provided with the tool or available for separate purchase.

Chip Extraction Problems
27 March 2024

The tool seems to have good power and sharp blades out of the box, but the chip extraction is pretty terrible. Running without the dust bag or vacuum attached causes the chip chute to plug almost immediately in my experience. The problem disappears when using a vacuum attachment. Would give a better rating if this problem was solved.

Dewalt folks too greedy or careless?

Dewalt produces good-quality tools for professionals or home-use projects. This planer works excellently with a slight vibration and without extensive noise. I would like great it much higher but after the purchase, I discovered that this planer comes without the dust bag. The retailer's employees have no idea why it is not included in the factory-sealed package. I checked two different sealed planers and both have the same problem. The factory box does not have any info about this issue. Even if you like the tool and would like to keep it in store sales personnel have no idea where to buy a dust bag that perfectly fits the planner. very disappointed. All competitors sell planners with dust bags!

Disappointing
13 July 2022

I wish this was better but it’s just not.The chip chute clogged up on 1 1/2” material cutting only 1/16 deep. The planer bed aren’t even leaving you with a deeper cut on one side and no way to adjust the front bed. Even a zero setting was cutting on the right side but not the left.Only one side to eject the chips from when it does work. I returned it and bought the Makita XPK02Z. It is everything the Dewalt should have been. Powerful, quiet, and cuts flat. Plus it has chip ejection on either side. I run my Dewalt batteries on it with an adapter. Couldn’t be happier and I paid an extra $50 for the planer and $18 for the adapter over the Dewalt price. I don’t hate Dewalt; I just bought the cordless barrel grip jig saw and that’s a great tool well worth the money.

This is a prime example of a tool designed by someone that will never use it or doesn't know how to use the tool. The blades for this item are awful and chip or break after limited use. The first time you try and change the blades you will quickly find out why you will never buy this tool again. The blades are $20-$30 and only last 1-2 hours if your lucky. Its awkward to get the blade into proper alignment with multiple parts needing to be attached together then screwed together twice and often times results in everything falling out of place as you screw the items back into the tool. I have the plug in version of this item and the blades are significantly easier to replace and last a lot longer. The main part to hold the blades in has already bent and wont seat the blade replacement correctly. I have only used it on pine 2x4s, cant imagine this holding up to another in terms of more dense types of wood.

Residential new build and renovation

I use this planer pretty regularly on residential new build homes and renovations. Mostly it gets used for straightening wall framing. It works brilliantly in this application, however, I do have to make sure the exhaust port doesn't face upwards. If it does face upwards the port will block about 50% of the time from the shavings. My only other gripe is that there is no face that allows the framing to be done directly up to a face, the planing stops about 2-3" of the floor or ceiling due to the drive etc that sticks out the side. But all up this is a great planer, it gets the job done no matter the material. Batteries can drain fast, but as above the tool is powerful. Blade change is easy. The safety is easy to operate one handed.

Bought and returned. This planer destroyed a piece of wood I was working on. The planer was either incorrectly calibrated or maybe I got a bad unit but it did not plane uniformly. Huge gouges that wouldn't come out even with several passes. I was highly disappointed. My whole tool set is DeWalt but this is one I'll have to seek elsewhere.
