When I bought this I thought it a bit of a luxury purchase that I might on occasion use. I already had and was extremely satisfied with corded Dewalt Orbital Sander. After working with the 20V version, it's not going to get occasion use, it's now my primary sander and my A/C powered sander will be idle a lot more.First it's smaller and lighter - depending on the battery you attach. For a quick sand a 1.5 or 2Amp XR battery is all you need. For bigger projects my 5Amp XR batteries will be my likely choice, as the 6Amp batteries would add too much bulk.Aside from the size compared to the A/C version, the variable speed I'm finding more useful than I expected. Slow seems to help prevent paint and poly sticking to the paper, and when using a course paper not digging into the work too fast. The bag attachment is completely different than the A/C powered version. Dewalt seems to be dust exhaust attachment challenged, the biggest negative overall too almost all Dewalt tools - each has a differing dust attaching point and Dewalt provides no adaptors even as an accessory add-on.Comfortable feel, solid grip, vibration about the same as the A/C powered sander. Has become my 1st pick for sanding.

Balance takes a little getting used to. Works well. Only complaint is the dust port is plastic and does not have any real protection, I fear this will be the "weak link" in the tool. It says it attaches to a shop vac, but none of the connectors or big or small shop vac's hook up?There are basic instruction on replacing the belt drive and pad. But no part numbers are provided. The "XR" Series is what the old dewalt tools brought to the table! Rough and tough, dependable tools. I have burnt the max series motors out of 2 drills, XR Still going strong. I expext this sander will be the same.Just the dust bag.

I bought this sander after having great experiences with many other Dewalt tools (table saw, circular saw, drill, impact driver, and more). What a disappointment! The sander runs at most for 15 minutes on a single charge. It pad doesn’t rotate consistently either. Even with two batteries, it takes way too much time than it should to get through a job. I might have to replace it with a corded model, but I’m hesitant to go with Dewalt if that’s the case.

I hate the sander. The weird angle of the dust bag and the battery makes it awkward to use or store. What I really hate about it is that there is no baffle or anything to keep the dust in the bag. Every time you move this thing, it leaves a pile of dust. Since this is a cordless tool, you can bet it will be moved around from job to job, leaving a mess everywhere.Makita and Bosch both put baffles on their dust bags to keep the dust in.Also, the non-standard dust port means it doesn't fit onto vacuum hoses the way that Makita, Bosch and Metabo/Hitachi do.It sands fine, but I wish I had bought a Makita.
My last sander was a corded quarter sheet sander and it was (and still is) okay but this sander is everything I thought a sander should be. The quarter sheet was good for smoothing wood eventually through the finer grits of sand paper. 60 grit was the thickest that would even fit on it and forget about using it to adjust a door that hits on top or anything where some small material removal was necessary. This sander is absolutely delicate enough to also do the light finishing sanding but also has the flexibility to use it for some small stain removal or for smoothing out paint before repainting. I especially like the variable speed even if for nothing other than giving my ears a break. I didn't find it to be especially heavy even with the 5AH battery and still ... Best part of this sander......the dust bag is actually effective and you can see and hear a vacuuming that the sander does and sucks the dust into the bag. No, do not go and refinish a dining room table with this and wonder why your fine china is still all full of dust. It's just more effective than anything I've used in the past.
I love this little sander. The functionality of a random orbital with the size of a palm. There is some heft to it, so you’re not going to forget it’s there, but it feels sturdy. The variable speed is a nice feature and adds some flexibility. I’m not a fan of the dust collection bag (I’ve never seen one of those work as intended), but I added the DWV9000 and my old (small) shop-vac for an inexpensive and remarkably effective dust collection system.
There's nothing like a cordless sander, and an orbital one at that. This sander is extremely effective and easy to use. It includes a wheel to adjust the speed of the rotating disc, which can come in handy for certain types of woods or desired sanding speed.I can't stress enough how crucial it is for a sander to be cordless. You often need to get into odd positions, and have to move the unit back and forth in long strokes. A cord only makes these scenarios annoying and/or difficult to accomplish. There's also a nice little removable dust bag, so there's virtually no dust to choke on coming from this sander. And it's very easy to click off and empty.Overall, highly-recommended, very easy-to-use sander.
Dewalt variable sander is solidly made, feels light in palm, quality item. Worth the investment. I have two other Dewalt sanders that are electric and have lasted for close to 10 years and still going strong. Only gripe is Dewalt has yet to standardize an easy dust collection system to connect up a shop-vac.Highly recommended as this tool works flawlessly.
With a new 4Ah battery, we are getting close to 30 minutes on a full charge, at wide open speed. We are primarily sanding filler material, not wood. I have used this on wood, but if I need to sand for 30+ minutes on wood, I'm going to use a belt sander first, then finish with this sander. The weight may be a little high, and you can only grip from 2 sides, but it isn't a nuisance. The 2 directions you can grip it are with a bag toward you, which works for most applications, or sometimes I spin it so the exhaust points away, and I take the bag off. I wear a mask, and do not use the bag when outside and I do not care about the debris made. Overall, I do not have an actual complaint with this sander. Any changes to the couple of things I pointed out would be a compromise to the design, and would probably give reason to have actual cons vs me nitpicking it. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this sander, and I'll buy another if we ever wear it out. After 100ish hours of sanding, it feels (and looks) like new. Last point - we used cheaper lowes sanding discs, and have forever. They kind of aren't great for long jobs. The diablo brand, in the same grit as the lowes brand, have made a huge difference in wear of the disc. We're going to try other brands, but matching a better quality sand disc with this sander only makes it better.
This unit works really well, I have just finished using for an oak table refinish. It easy to hold, with minimal vibrations through the hand. Battery life is dependant on a number of factors, including how much weight is put on the sander. It runs full speed till the near the end of battery then cuts out. I only wish it were better on the dust collection, especially fine dust. The bag attaches easily and is easy to dump. I would have really liked an attachment to allow a vacuum or dust collection system to hook onto it if one didn’t want to use the provided dust receptacle.
