Aggressive sander stripper for painted surfaces

This is not a glorified orbital sander. It is an aggressive remover of peeling paint when used with a 40 or 60 grit disc. You can purchase and adapter that attaches to the shroud and becomes part of the Dewalt dustless vacuum system in coordination with its HEPA vacuums. No one at the big box stores are going to tell you this because they don't know about it. You can regulate the aggression and speed which sometimes you have to do in order to control it and get use to the action. It can be a bucking bronco but once you get use to it it will remove peeling paint 5 times faster than an orbital. It would probably be best to sell the adapter with sander but the output of this machine would be too much for a dust bag. You need a vacuum.

Upon just taking this out of the box I set it up per the manual but I noticed a very slight grinding noise when operated. I figured thats probably just how this sander sounds and I didn't pay too much attention to it. After about 2 minutes of use the grinding got progressively louder and I smelled burning electrical. I unplugged the sander and took a look at it and the smell definitely came from the motor section and it was unbelievably hot everywhere but the handle. This was probably right about to catch fire when I stopped using it, it was THAT hot. It took about an hour to cool down completely, and I obviously couldn't consider using it again to finish the work I started. I'm hoping Dewalt will be able to repair or replace it through warranty, although I've heard ... MoreUpon just taking this out of the box I set it up per the manual but I noticed a very slight grinding noise when operated. From reading the reviews, there is a lack of understanding of this tool.It is not an orbital or DA type sander. The motion is circular like a grinder. Very aggressive and requires practice to use. A finer grit paper (maybe finer than one might assume) will make it less agressive. The wobbly comments are either from a bent backing plate (it happens) or the grabbing of the disk. Use both hands/handles and try to use light pressure. Again, it takes practice.A dust bag would be of no use. The sander has no impeller to move air through the pad into a bag. You must use a vacuum. The dust collection is actually very effective, and this sander generates a huge amount of dust.I routinely use this sander for my initial sanding on newly built cabinet parts. It is very fast, and saves a lot of time. Go fine on your sandpaper grit, to avoid having to sand out swirl scratches later. Final sanding is done with a orbital or dual action sander.Don't try to sand corners or edges on finish work...this sander is for larger flat surfaces. The supplied sanding pad is soft as it should be. This reduces the aggressiveness. I actually like mine a lttle softer than supplied....plenty of options available.

Good depending on your need
20 May 2021

Pros: this tool is very very powerful and will remove tons of material very fast. I also like how lightweight it is also very compact for its power. Cons: I have a couple dust connectors and non fit this, and this creates a ton of saw dust. I also feel that at the lower speed the motor Boggs down so I kept it at the highest speed. Tips: just because they give you a handle do your best not to push down on this tool it will shake you and cause bad swirl marks. You really should practice on some scrap before using this. Also remember that this was designed to remove a lot of wood fast so if your looking for something more precise look at the lower amp sanders.

Not good for fine woodwork
26 June 2023

I am a beginner, hobyist woodworker. I bought this because the palm mouse sander was just too small. This sander is great at removing wood, but it is too powerful for any fine woodwork. I am making a tabletop and swirls are impossible to prevent or remove. I was hoping that attaching my shop vac to the dust port would help with the issue, but even my small adatper slides right off.

Power sanding - not for the delicate job
7 January 2021

This is a powerful sander but is difficult to control. I bought it to sand chip wood for one project and was not concerned with a perfect finish. If I were, this would not be the tool. Not sure what to use it for now unless I need to rip a lot of wood fast and don't care about imperfections. The drill style handle makes it a little awkward to apply the right amount of pressure and it tends to jump all over the place as it sands. Also a little bummed there was no dust bag and the port doesn't fit my standard shopvac hose.Pros:Will sand lots of wood fastAdjustable rpmsCons:Tends to jump around and dig the wood.Drill style handle is awkward to hold and apply the right pressureNo dust bagNon standard dust port.

Decent sander from an ergonomic perspective, but the motor does not seem rated for jobs beyond light-duty. Loading onto the pad either from material and/or applied pressure causes the motor to overheat. It did in fact begin smoking after 5-10 minutes of continuous use.Perhaps I got a faulty unit, not sure? This is the first time any power tool designed and assembled by Dewault has been a letdown. I do hope the motor in the 7" / 9" Buffer is more robust.

Serious problem with switch or motor
19 July 2022

This sander performs its function well, but there is something seriously faulty in the switch or the motor.I bought my first one of these in January '21. It worked great and lasted over a year, with probably more than a hundred hours of use. However at some point since then, DeWalt changed something in the switch. When my first unit died, it just stopped working. It had given me a reasonable amount of use, and I wasn't upset. So I bought another. That second unit lasted about two months. I thought maybe it was just an anomaly.Instead of simply not working, I started smelling an awful burning smell, I could hear an electrical crackling sound, and smoke started pouring out from around the trigger switch.I had to unplug it to get it to stop.I brought it back ... MoreThis sander performs its function well, but there is something seriously faulty in the switch or the motor.I bought my first one of these in January '21. They all do the same thing: burning smell, crackling sound, smoke from the switch.I am using the sander exactly the same way I have been for almost two years. There is something faulty in these things, and DeWalt needs to get it fixed immediately. Not only are these basically garbage, they are not safe.

So Dusty!
31 May 2023

I should have read reviews before purchasing this sander. It does a great job, but there is no dust management, so the dust is literally everywhere. I am willing to purchase a dust cover, but I have searched everywhere I can think and it doesn’t seem to even be an option. So, that’s pretty annoying and disappointing.

Takes off everything, Blows Dust Everywhere

This sander took layers of old paint off my patio railing. However, it’s too big for hard to reach angles & there’s no way to manage the impossible amount of dust this product kicks up. Everything within 6 feet of my work space was covered with a thick layer of fine dust and had to be cleaned individually. Effective sander but clean up was awful. Purchased at Home Depot. They were unable to assist or explain why no dust bag options for this product. I plan to return this item.
