After buying a couple of considerably cheaper miniature battery cameras I can see why this is more expensive. Is it worth all of its price? Maybe not but it's definitely better than messing around with cheap cameras (even ones pushing $100) which I found to be very flaky and are now in the bin. The mechanical design of this camera with its magnetics is impressive. The controllability and reconfigurability via its tiny touchscreen is quite remarkable. The user interface is pretty good except that it came defaulted to Chinese language and required a guided Youtube video to navigate to the language menu and change it. For my purposes of making short videos in a scale model environment the camera works really well but its limited onboard storage and overheating issues ... MoreAfter buying a couple of considerably cheaper miniature battery cameras I can see why this is more expensive. For my purposes of making short videos in a scale model environment the camera works really well but its limited onboard storage and overheating issues would surely be showstoppers for its intended purpose of a PoV action camera. But if willing to operate it with its base attached the storage and battery can both be extended. For my application it's too big in that configuration. The image stabilization is good in the cases for which I have needed it but can do so much more than my requirements demand and I haven't fully explored all of its capabilities. I am very unimpressed by the requirement to activate online for no discernible reason whatsoever (and I told the manufacturer so in no uncertain terms). The camera itself is not a cloud camera and does not require the internet to work. I did have some issues with the USB mass storage mode not working sometimes on Linux but it seems that restarting the camera fixes that when it happens. No regrets on buying this at all.

You bought a 4k camera, but in my experience you have to run it in 2k at the max to avoid overheating. But you'll overheat anyway, and not necessarily in excessive heat. We attach these to tractors (outside) and when we shoot on any day in the 80's, I can guarantee by the time the tractor gets back to me to check on the recording status, it will have quit due to overheating. So... basically it's pointless. Now I do use these mostly to capture audio, as well as backup footage in case the A-Cam (my drone) misses something important. And you are able connect DJI's Mic to this (those things are awesome and live up to DJI's standard of quality). Unfortunately, that either led to quicker overheating or stuttery recording. Either way, I had a failed first attempt and with the other problems of simply figuring out how to record w/o overheating, I've avoided attaching the mic since. Now a few months into using, I've just about decided to live with it. But I actually think I'll go back to using the GoPro's we have. This isn't to disparage DJI. I've loved their drones and use the Air 2s several times a week. It's resilient and tough and a great tool. I love the DJI Mic's. And I'm seriously considering the 4D. So DJI makes great products, but this isn't one of them.If you don't need to run them for any longer than 10 minutes and you'll do it indoors in temps under 70 degrees, maybe you'll be okay shooting 4K uninterrupted. And maybe you'll like them.Godspeed.

Then I left it plugged in for 6 hours to charge, the camera module and the dual screen modules were connected. But when I went to use it the first time the dual screen module was completely dead. Not sure what happened, if 6 hours was not enough time. Looks like the dual screen module didn't hold the charge.3rd After recording for 17 mins and 21 seconds, I wanted to download the recording. Since I was only using the camera module, the recording was stored on the internal storage of the camera module. To download the recording to a computer you can attach the camera module to the dual screen module, copy file to the SR card in the dual screen module, then remove the SD card, place in an adapter, insert to laptop. Or you can connect the camera module to the dual screen module, then connect to the computer using a USB-C cable. The later is the method I chose. So a 17 min video generates three files, two at approximately 4 GB and one at 2.5 GB. The first attempt at downloading failed on the third file, generated an error message. The second attempt worked. I need that to be more reliable.4th While initially I was able to connect to the Action 2 using the DJI Mimo app, I am no longer able to connect. Tried several times and even reset the camera and still no luck.Don't want to be negative but that was my experience. To reiterate, form factor is awesome. It's hard to review this product. On one hand, it's a clear example of DJI's boldness into new categories. However, the execution isn't flawless. For example, while you're technically able to record to the SD card in the module connected to the main camera, if you bump it too much (car mount for example), your video is now corrupt. Best to record to internal storage and then transfer over.Personally, I love that there isn't any app that's required. You can just operate it all on its own with all the features and functionality. It's compatible natively with the DJI Mic (their best product IMO) which is a real selling point, but you have to have a module attached to use it. Let me start straight from the get go I was hoping this camera to be a strong competitor against another action camera line, especially due to the asking price for this combo dual screen package. Let me start with the good things. The quality of the video both day and night is impressive. I tested this while flying my aircraft during the night to get city skyline video along with daytime to see how the brightness and contrast of the sun to my interior would look. The auto exposure was smooth and rapid and performed as I expected. The rocksteady feature performed quite well during turbulent flight however when using it on a day today from a vlogging perspective, I noticed it very clearly trying to compensate for bumps that didn’t exist while panning. It seem to lag behind just slightly as though it was trying to detect and over smooth footage. Regarding battery life with the add on display, while shooting 1080P I was able to get about 2 and a half ours out of the battery with both the MOD connected and the main unit . Now let me list some of the serious concerns of the design of this camera. First off you have to buy a combo unit the base Camera itself has no ports available to charge the camera or put in an external SD card. The only way to do this is to buy one of the mods. One of the biggest drawbacks and concerns is the lack of protection of the camera lens and overall body of the camera. I couldn’t help but worry while I was using the camera that I would drop it and smash the lens. Another drawback is the fact that I must have another mod connected to have the ability to charge the main unit and the mod this also applies to additional storage. Due to the fact that the main camera is waterproof because it has no ports, and the mod add-ons that are magnetic are not waterproof had me scratching my head a bit as to the design intent. Action camera design should always be durable tough and able to withstand the hardest conditions. Unfortunately I don’t believe that this meets the mark of what the purpose of an action camera truly is to be.
The DJi Action 2 is a very innovative device, but it does have a few issues. The main concept here are the 2 cubes, one acting as the main camera and the other acting as an extended battery bank, storage expansion and extra OLED screen. When you attach the 2 cubes together magnetically, they become one device. Whether you hold the camera towards you or away, each oled screen provides you with a view of what you’re shooting, while automatically locking the other screen. The cubes are made of a nice metal housing, that makes them both very sturdy in case of accidental dropping or damage. The second cube also houses a micro sd card reader (class 3 or higher only), and it also acts a power bank to give you an extended battery life. The cubes are made of a nice metal housing, that makes them both very sturdy in case of accidental dropping or damage. The second cube also houses a micro sd card reader (class 3 or higher only), and it also acts a power bank to give you an extended battery life. When the 2 cubes are attached together, you also get a multidirectional mic array, that allows you to pick up sound all around you.I love the concept of the 2 cubes, but there is a catch to it…and that being, only the main camera unit is waterproof. So, if you plan on shooting under water, you won’t be able to use extended storage. This isn’t a deal breaker, because the main unit does have a built in 32gb of storage (22gb usable), but I see this more as a design flaw. I don’t understand why they didn’t add the SD slot on the main unit instead of the secondary unit. Also, the placement of the SD slot concerns me, as it’s directly below the powerful magnet, it makes me worried that it will wipe some or all my card’s data. With the magnetic plate you hang around your neck, you can tuck it under your shirt and the cube will stick to it making it appear as if it were floating over your chest. This is handy if you want to shoot some hands-free action shots. The magnets are strong enough, that I never had a problem with the camera falling off or detaching. The camera has some solid specs on paper, like shooting 4K at 120fps, built in image stabilizer, multidirectional mics, wide and ultra-wide angles etc. You can also use the cam as a webcam when you attach it to your computer. I tried this on my MacBook pro, and it worked great. It immediately detects it and uses it, no set up required.I decided to try out the 4k 120p first, and when playing back the footage I noticed a lot of lines running down the screen, I also noticed that the image was not staying in focus at all, it also would start to freeze up during play back. I then switched to 4k 60p and that made a huge difference, I had none of those problems anymore. The biggest issue that I have with the camera is how hot it gets after only a short period of time, and it gets hot. For this reason, you are only able to shoot for a certain amount of time before the camera shuts off on you. The camera does have a built-in auto shut off for when the camera gets too hot, and that’s right around the 3 or 5 mins depending on the settings.Overall, I love the technology of the camera. I think they did an amazing job with the build quality and the materials they used. Unfortunately, it comes with a cost…The camera gets too hot too fast, the micro sd card slot should’ve been put on the main camera. I did have issues when recording in 4k 120p, but the video was crystal clear at 4k 60p. With that being said, I do think it’s a nice action cam and would recommend it.
If you understand its many limitations, you can get a lot out of this video camera. I use it as a bike dash cam and a camera for touring locations for my YouTube channel. It's small enough to go anywhere and if you're only using the main unit, it's waterproof. Recording at a reduced 1080p can get your 55 minutes without the battery attachment. That quality is perfectly fine most of the time.If you push it to 4k 120fps, it lasts only 19 minutes BUT it's weird, it almost eliminates any shaky footage from nighttime shots. I thought having a higher frame rate would reduce the lowlight capabilities to make it unusable. At $550 this was a little too much for me but it's been on sale a few times when when it's around $300, go for it. I love it
I have and have had several DJI products over the years (from drones, to gimbals, to action cams) and the Action 2 Dual-Screen set is probably some of the most fun I have had with their products. Don't get me wrong, nothing beats that first time you zoom around with your drone and get cool birds-eye footage, but that actually gets a little old after a while. The Action 2 has so many uses, that I don't think you will run out of fun things to do with it.I have to say that one of the main reasons why I'm liking the the DJI Action 2 so much is their improved DJI Mimo software. I've had Action 2 and the software on my iPhone for about 5 days now and I am still having fun with just the most basic feature of the software. I really need to put it on my iPad to give myself more real estate to really dig into everything Mimo can do. Just doing the basic AI Editor makes you seem like some video auteur by taking your clips and adding music and effects all by itself. The first clip I did was just walking around my house so I could see how the Action 2 did with a variety of light sources and levels. I put it all into a clip and the software automatically added speed ups and slowdown effects as well as music. I showed it to my buddy next door who is a realtor and he was blown away. He is actually going to get an Action 2 just for this. Right now he PAYS someone to do this kind of thing for him and his listings. Now he can do it himself. Plus he has a new baby and want to film all the 'firsts'.In photography the old adage is 'The best camera is the one you have with you.' I used to have a ton of high-end photo gear and was a semi-professional photographer (got paid to shoot photos and sold some prints to publications). Eventually, I got tired of lugging all that stuff around and breaking my back. Now I just like whipping out my iPhone and taking nice snapshots for me. That is the easiest and I always have my phone on me. I thought that the DJI phone gimbals would be great but you still have to carry that with you and you have to set up your phone. Now, I can have a dedicated camera with me virtually all the time if I want. Prior action cams required attachment to some mount (whether it was a selfie stick, head mount, chest strap, or whatever) for you to have relatively hands-free operation. Now I can attach the magnetic bracket to the camera and put the neck lanyard behind my shirt and the camera sticks through the fabric. This makes it super unobtrusive, and with the voice command ability turned on, I don't even have to touch the camera or my phone to snap a picture or clip of what I'm doing/seeing! That being said, I can't wait for some of the accessories that DJI has planned for the Action 2 to come out. I have reservations in on all of them.In addition to being a semi-pro photographer, I'm also an avid hiker and traveler. That last bit has been pretty hard to keep up with over the last few months but it has gotten better now that the vaccine is out and travel restrictions have lessened. I plan on changing my relatively static blog of landscape photos now into a much more action packed blog highlighting cool hikes and trips my wife take. Unfortunately, I had hoped for the Action 2 to arrive before I just recently went on a hiking trip in the Appalachians for Fall but it arrive a couple of days after I got back. That's OK because I have a trip to Joshua Tree set up for Thanksgiving and another one set for Cabo San Lucas (where I hope to use the waterproof case - fingers crossed that it's out by then - for snorkeling) in January! That's in addition to the hikes around the Channel Islands and Santa Monica Mountains I usually do.I have to say that if you are going to get one of the kits (and I HIGHLY recommend that you do so), that you get the dual screen version. I might have actually more use for just the battery attachment, but I like the flexibility of the dual screen version more. You get some of the battery back-up of the single-purpose battery add-on with the addition of the additional screen if you plan on doing selfies or to record yourself for blog segments.OOH! I almost forgot one of my favorite parts of the Action 2 (well, I guess I mentioned it above when talking about the lanyard), but the magnetic features of this thing are great! Attaching the secondary screen is super easy because you just put them in the vicinity of each other and they click into place. Same goes for the ball-head and adapter mount. They also have little clips to add some additional security but I have to say that the magnetic grip is pretty darn strong.Another thing I really enjoy about the Action 2 is that the screens are big enough end responsive enough to actually use on their own without having to use the phone interface. Swiping up/down and left/right bring up all the features and menus you need and the controls are easy to hit without fat-fingering them and messing up the settings.I have only two minor quibbles with the Action 2, otherwise it is the coolest little device I have had in recent years and that is including things other than cameras! The first issue is that DJI launched the Action 2 without the accessories available. I am so geeked out to use this in so many different ways that I NEED some of those and I might miss out on some great opportunities if these things don't hit the street soon. My second is that sometime when attaching the camera unit to the secondary screen unit, one of the clips fails to secure for some reason. I can't figure out why but I almost always have to push it down to lock it into place. Like I said above, the magnetic attachment is very strong, but this is also a expensive and delicate piece of equipment and I don't want to run to the risk of losing or damaging it if it comes off of the mount.I also have one request of DJI if they read this review. Please make a concealed clothing mount so that I don't have to use the one attached to the neck lanyard when I want to attach it to my clothing. The neck lanyard is cool, and the stabilization software is phenomenal at counteracting much of the motion when walking around with it on the lanyard, but having it attached to my clothing is even more stable and unobtrusive. I've attached a picture of me using this method through a semi-thick sweatshirt and you can see how cool it is. The connection is solid between the camera and the magnetic bracket, and between the bracket and the mount, but if they made a more powerful (read larger surface area) bracket or mount, it would be perfect! If you can't tell from my gushing, I am having a blast with the Action 2 and I am stoked to try it out in so many new ways. The best camera I will have with me will be my Action 2, because it will be so easy to have with me. Go out and get yourself one!
Everything about this camera is great. If you want to know all of the specs there are a lot of good videos out there. Ill just give some of my viewpoints as someone who takes pictures and videos for fun. Good solid metal camera that is pint sized and can fit almost anywhere. The size, the different shooting options, the fact that you can pair it with the bottom battery to extend shooting times and it also allows for an external sd card for continuous shooting as well. Theyinclude a bunch of different mounting options and the magnetic clips feel very secure. Now some cons. It gets extremely hot when shooting longer videos. The main camera is waterproof but the bottom battery and sd card are not so you have to remember to take it off before going in the water. Didnt ... MoreEverything about this camera is great. Didnt come with a case and i had to purchase tempured screen protection for the lenses and screens. Also you cant charge just the top part of the camera. You have to charge it trhough the bottom battery. For me the pros outweigh the cons and for the sheer size and what it can do, ill be keeping the camera.
Back in the '80s and '90s, I was a wedding videographer. I shot over 600 weddings using a full-size VHS camcorder with a 100 watt light attached to a bracket. We're talking about 10 pounds of weight on my shoulder for roughly 8 hours, not to mention the 4 lead-acid batteries strapped to my waist on a belt that weighed about 12 pounds. By the time I got home after each wedding, I couldn't move. The VHS quality was OK for the time and eventually, I used a Mini-DV camcorder that cost me around $3000 and produced a better image than VHS but still garbage by today's standard. I no longer shoot weddings but I like to shoot videos when I travel. Since then I bought many different digital cameras - still cameras, 3D cameras, 360-degree cameras, and a few action cameras. ... MoreBack in the '80s and '90s, I was a wedding videographer. Each one produced a better image and got smaller and smaller. The quality got better and better as the years went by. All the iPhones I have owned had cameras that got better and better as well. Just when I thought that the quality was as good as it could get (on a consumer action camera) I heard about this camera.I have owned a DJI drone for the last 2 years and am still amazed by the quality of the video it produces. I had just gotten an action cam when I heard of the DJI Osmo camera. I wasn't going to buy another action cam at the time so I used the one I had. Now, when I heard of this new DJI Action 2 camera and saw how much smaller it is than the previous cam, I couldn't resist getting it. I am absolutely blown away by the quality of the video. It's like they took the camera off the drone and made it into a stand-alone camera, the image is wonderful. One thing I like to do when I feel like shooting videos is to strap it onto my chest and go for a walk down a beautiful street or on a park trail. When I get home, I like to transfer the video to my iPad and place the iPad onto my treadmill for when the weather is bad so it looks like I am walking that path. The problem with doing that with my old action cam was I could see the motion of every step I took. It was shaky and jittery and I wanted something smoother. The DJI Action 2 has a mode called Rock Steady that seems to give me the kind of smooth walking video that I was looking for without having to have an elastic harness across my chest. Instead, I slip the included pendant around my neck and tuck it under my shirt and attach the camera magnetically to the front of my shirt. It's so small and light I can't even feel it and the magnet is so strong, there's no chance of it falling off the pendant. The DJI Action 2 comes in two parts as you can see in the pictures, the camera that you wear and the battery pack that you can attach magnetically to it that also gives you a second screen for recording a blog or whatever. On that unit, there is also a Micro SD card slot that you can use to expand the storage capability as the internal memory is only 32Gb. You can choose which storage area you want to record on or transfer the video you shot to the Micro SD card so you can insert it into your computer to extract the video. You have many shooting options available that you access by sliding your find across the touch screen in different directions. You can change the resolution up to 4K 120 frames per second, you can adjust the white balance and, you can switch from full screen to wide screen. There is timelapse and hyperlapse available, you can shoot still image at 12 megapixels (4000x3000 resolution) and the best thing of all is that you can control the camera with your voice while wearing the camera on your chest. When paired with the second screen/battery you get 4 microphones to get good clean audio for your production. You can even add an external microphone and add a macro lens to the front of the camera for extreme closeups (sold separately). It does come with a tripod mount that can also be attached using a washable sticky pad on its base and a standard action cam mount if you have other action cam equipment. You can download an app for your phone called DJI Mimo that lets you store and edit the videos right on your phone, chat with DJI support if you need it, watch videos on the DJI Academy and learn all kinds of tips and tricks. If I were still shooting weddings, I would have 3 or 4 of these cams strategically placed throughout the wedding and due to its size, nobody would even notice them around the church. This is one of the best cameras I own right now and can't wait to really travel the country with it.I am totally blown away by the quality of the picture and audio. I'm going to have a lot of fun shooting with a camera this small.
