"I love this book!" That's a phrase I rarely hear from my 9-year old son, who is a voracious reader, but that's how he reacted after he started flipping through the pages of this book. I recently introduced him to a "lite" version of D&D 5th edition, deliberately simplifying the rules to match his patience level. The official D&D 5e materials, including The Monster Manual, had too much detail to be easily appreciated by him. This book however, is right up his alley, and he enjoys flipping through the pages non-stop, excitedly telling me about the coolest aspects of each monster he encounters. Best $9 purchase ever!

I have been playing dungeons and dragons and over roleplays for around 20 years, give or take, and saw these young adventurers guides. I thought these may hold simplified rules or maybe ideas for new players to make the game easily accessible to a wider audience... The books have no stats or rules at all, but do mention specific dungeons and characters from yesteryear. From what I can tell these books are for people that don't want to play the game yet have some kind of knowledge about the history. Overall these books seem completely redundant, just buy the starter kit and rip off the plot to a film and get to playing! They do have nice pictures however

My 7yo loved his copy! These books are just what they say on the cover: a young adventurer's guide. There's no actual game info/stats, but there's a ton of flavor text about dungeons, monsters, heroes, treasure, etc. Great fun, and a great intro to the game for budding adventurers.

I got these for my son, who was a big fan of the old "Practical Guide to..." series of books by Mirrorstone Books, which was like a spin-off line of books published by Wizards of the Coast back around 2007-2008. Those were aimed at young readers and featured a similar format to these new volumes. He was very pleased with both the Monsters & Creatures and Warriors & Weapons guides. I quickly read through each of the new volumes and enjoyed what I saw. These would be a great primer for bringing new players into the world of D&D (or any fantasy RPG for that matter). I bought this for my son who has a growing interest in dungeons and dragons. He has enjoyed another book that was very similar in that it described beasts, what they do, and how to handle them. This book manages to draw upon classic D&D bestiary but has an art style that is slightly better for younger audiences. The best part is that it's just slightly adjusted but does not become a complete kiddy cartoon. The subjects are kept to two pages each. The beasts align with the game well. I do recommend this book!
I received the first two books in this series (Warriors & Weapons and Monsters & Creatures). These small, hardback primers are beautifully illustrated. The language is appropriate for you readers. There are no game mechanics in this book! The Monster & Creature guide discusses 33 iconic monsters, as well as some unique individuals, and talks about the environments in which they are likely to be found. The descriptions are fairly brief, but effective, conveying the essentials about each. The book closes with some questions to prompt the budding dungeon master (or author) in crafting their games & stories. Though there are no game mechanics or rules, this series would compliment the D&D Starter Box (or similar introductory set, such as the D&D Basic Rules PDF) very well.
This book is smaller then the standard Player Handbook, but still a decent size. Great quality! The cover, pages, and art are all top notch! About 53 physical pages, 105 pages of content. It is well organized and set up kind of like a condensed Monster Manual. However, keep in mind that there are no stat blocks, game rules, tables, or anything like that. This is really just an informational description style guide that helps new players or kids gain familiarity with the monster and environments included. I would say kids as young as 2nd-3rd grade reading level can probably get a good amount out of enjoyment out of it even if they do not know some of the higher level words (examples: trickery, unwary, ambush, malicious, straightforward, ferocious, detached, etc). This new series is not what I expected, but definitely what I didn't know I wanted. Monsters and Creatures contains several of the most well known monsters in D&D, and instead of just pumping out a copy paste of stat blocks it tells you WHO they are. What do the monsters do when they aren't being slain? Can you ride them? How big are they really? Like in comparison to me? What should I do when I face one? What shouldn't I do? It's an amazing primer on the monsters and creatures for people of any age. If you want stat blocks, go to the Monster Manual. If you want your new players to understand the creatures they're encountering without reading off their special abilities and rattling off numbers... This is perfect.
We loved this Junior reader book series for introducing our kids to the world of Cooperative Storytelling through playing Dungeons & Dragons. I got these books so they could familiarize themselves with the fantasy world of D&D and be better prepared for thier first adventure. We have three kids from 7 years old to 11, and they loved pouring over them. The books are beautifully illustrated and informative. It really got them amped up to play thier first game, which turned out to be very therapeutic for them. I highly recommend fantasy role-playing for kids & adults, and these books are a nice intro!
