/Curvature patterns not desirable. Had to shave-off with my own grinder deep spurs around axe and bottom of handle. Very disappointed! Overall though, a mighty fine (Hand AXE) to have around the house! :)......Value for the money? €30 no more..

Wanted another Estwing hatchet after losing mine. This one is great. Shipper could use some work as it was lost and put into a different box. Hatchet was a little beat up but needed for a trip so I didnt fool with a return.

Got this from my brother about 5 yrs ago. First off is heavier than you would want for backpacking or throwing into a hunting pack. Other than that this thing is a beast of a hatchet. It's thick, heavy, and we'll made. I have no doubt that this thing will take decades of abuse and keep going. It's weight makes it great for chopping small trees (about the size of a firearm or even a bit larger), and splitting firewood/kindling. I love using this thing on kindling because it has enough weight to split easily, but not too much to make it unweildy for the delicate stuff. When camping I always keep this guy next to the wood like for this task. My dad has the full size camp axe and it is just as well made and after over 10 years of use and abuse it looks like it'll keep ... MoreGot this from my brother about 5 yrs ago. The axe and the monogrammed sheath/belt loop are outstanding! Special gift for my brother-in-law who donated a kidney to my husband 8 years ago, he loved it! Previously bought a case for an older multi-tool and it is high quality (and you were able to recommend the specific case based on my description/specifications), so immediately thought of American Bench Craft while searching for this special gift. The turn around time was extremely fast, and good thing since my husband usually waits until the last minute to ask me to shop for something important, lol! I'd highly recommend American Bench Craft, and particularly this axe set!
Every visit I made to Home Depot for several years invariably ended with me looking at this axe when I made it to the tool section. I always thought it was a beautiful tool, but I could never justify spending 40$ on something I would have limited opportunities to use. Eventually I couldn't resist and on impulse I treated myself to this product.I've tested it in comparison to cheaper models which I use for camping and unsurprisingly it performs just as well, though it does look better doing it. It is great for creating kindling or making small diameter starter logs for a wood stove--both of which I've used this for and it performed admirably. It holds its blade, has a great weight distribution, and feels good on the swing.I don't regret purchasing it, but it ... MoreEvery visit I made to Home Depot for several years invariably ended with me looking at this axe when I made it to the tool section. The extra price is worth the showmanship to me, but functionally there's little difference from competitors at lower price points.
Wanted a new hatchet for years and when this went on sale I grabbed one. Great looking , well made. Now sharpness is missing. Could have given this to my granddaughters to play with. Not being sharp is an understatement. Blunt would be more like it. They were asleep at the wheel the day this left the shop. Still working on it weeks after receiving it trying to get it sharp. Be ready for some work if you get one.
My brother and I used this axe to make forts up in the woods when we were children 65 years ago. I collect axes and tomahawks. When I saw this on sale, I bought it as a present to myself, and a keepsake to add to my collection. I did not know they were still being made in the USA.I was thrilled to find it. They are top quality.
I received a Estwing E14A hatchet as a gift for my 8th birthday. I am now 54 and still treasure it.I have owned other hatchets, but they were junk compared to the Estwing. The tapered, hollow ground blade will slice into wood where other "steep angled" hatchets will just rebound off. The solid, one piece steel design eliminates the head flying off a handle like the cheap hatchets. As a kid, I had no idea how to take care of it. I had dropped it in the woods and lost it, then miraculously stumbled across it a year later (this happened more than once!). I have left it out in the weather, and pretty much abused it as much as anyone could.Due to my lack of care, the leather discs on the handle dried out and rotted over the 45+ years I have owned it. I removed all the leather discs and wrapped the frame with leather thong (leather string) multiple times til the handle was built back up to the same size. I took a few spray cans of marine spar varnish and repeatedly soaked the leather until I built up a thick heavy coating that will last for another generation. My Grandson turns 8 soon, and I am purchasing an E14A for his birthday present.Over the years, I have purchased several E44A Camper's axes and E45A Long handled Camper's axes both for myself and a few of each for our Boy Scout troop. There is no way you can go wrong with purchasing Estwing products!
Yes I have had mine for about five years and keep it in my camper outside storage compartment. When we go camping it's great for kindling and making a nice fire and yes the backside is just as handy pounding awning stakes or as a quick hammer for tents stakes. Great Item
Feels a good solid lump in your hand, but it is mostly steel. Wide, easy to read graticule and numbers. The locking mechanism is particularly easy to use. Good stand out length 2.18m - just tried. There is a bump stop to reduce the shock of a long rewind coming to the end which is good. I just use it for DIY around the house, hope it lasts a lot longer than my same sized Stanley that broke after a couple of years of light use.
