I burn 5-7 cords per year and get as many full tree loads I can find. I split all my wood by sledge, wedges and splitting axe. After my Fiskars X27 Splitting Axe this Estwing axe is my #2 tool. I use it with another 4lb hand sledge to power through tougher Oaks with heavy twisted grains. After 5yrs of heavy use, the strike head has mushroomed enough to show cracking (expected this 3yrs earlier). After this kind of performance for me, I definitely wanted another one. I will still be using it for all my small chopping as the axe side is still in perfect shape and will reserve the new one for pounding through the stubborn twisted stuff.

I had one of these for years and it gave me great service. After one hour of using this tool to drive a splitting wedge the hammer side was severely deformed. Bringing it back to my local Ace in Liberty NY where I bought this tool they would not help me stating the tool was not designed for striking a splitting wedge. While these people are very nice, they are misinformed as to the function of a maul, whose sledge hammer end is meant for striking a splitting wedge. I will spend less at Ace because of this experience and I will think twice about buying Estwing since a Chinese product would have performed at least this well for a lot less money.

When buying local firewood I have been disappointed to get "seasoned" wood only to find out that it it not really seasoned. Therefore, I have to split it down to staves in order to burn it. I have used my splitting maul/axe, normal camp hatchets, and hand held wedges. All of these are viable options but are not perfectly suited for the task at hand. However, this camp axe from Estwing fit the bill perfectly. It provides me the splitting power of a wedge or splitting maul but in an easier to handle package. No hitting my fingures, like with a wedge, and lighter and easier to handle than a full size splitting maul. This small, wedge shaped, 4 lbs. camp axe combined with my 4 lbs. hammer, is the perfect combination for splitting larger firewood into smaller burning staves.

Splits dry 6-8 inch NW softwood log sections like butter. Haven't used it on anything bigger yet, or on green wood or hardwood so I can't speak for that. Comes with a blue nylon sheath. Made in USA. Mine weighs 4 pounds 7 ounces with sheath attached. Grip length is 7.5 inches which is a little tight for two hand usage but doable.If you're ordering this fireside friend splitter online I would make sure you know what a swinging a 4 pound sledge with one hand feels like first, because 4 pounds on a 12 inch handle means business. Works good for kindling after a little practice getting a feel for the weight. Great tool.
Great Axe for splitting pieces of wood that were already split but you want to reduce in size for starting fires. Will split most pieces with one blow. Larger pieces when the Axe does not go through it can be spit by hitting the Axe with a 3 lb sledge. Nice size one piece forged Head and Handle. I was using a hatchet with a wooden handle that the head would come off and the handle would split. This is not a hatchet or an a typical axe. It is a very well made small maul.
This a great little splitting axe. Its quite heavy for such a small axe, which helps to get the necessary force to split logs. Its sharp and has just the right shape of the head, so that it doesnt get stuck if the log doesnt split. i use the back side as a sledge hammer for wedges to split larger logs, works great.
I got my maul today and decided to try it right away. Hurricane Dorian uprooted a tree on a property, but as it was in bushes, I decided to leave it until leaves came off. Tree was about 8” in diameter, this 4 lb maul made a quick work of splitting it all up. At first I was a little sceptical about maul finish, I thought it all going to come off, but I finished splitting all that tree and few logs of dead pine and finish still looks just a way I got it. I have 8 lb maul too, but for anything smaller then 10” in diameter, this maul works fantastic. I knew Estwing making great tools and this maul is not an exception, this tool is going to last.
I have many Estwing hammers, hatchets, wedges... The 14" "Steel Camp Axe" / "Fireside Friend" is a great tool. It's handy to have near the campfire pit for when it comes time to split up some last minute logs, or kindling. I also use it for regular split and stack activities, it makes a super wedge, as well as a great heavy hammer to get splitting wedges started and ready for the sledge hammer. The compact but heavy mini-maul is very useful when we go RV-ing; I pack the Fireside Friend and also my Estwing camp hatchet and I have a powerful yet portable set of campfire wood splitting tools.
I wanted to wait a year to review to see how it holds up, but I love it so much I could not wait. At 65, I no longer cut wood into 15"+ sections but cut closer to only 10" so it is easier to split. I even was thinking of buying a splitter due to my age, but this AXE (it is NOT a hatchet!) is going to save me those hundreds of dollars. The tree I'm splitting is fresh oak, and for diameters of 5", I am using this instead of an axe. In fact, having strained my back, I'm sitting on one log and splitting these pieces sitting down. I only have one "problem"... I don't have much firewood right now, BUT I have a TON of KINDLING.
I am new to wood splitting and had terrible aim with a big maul. I decided it was too dangerous for me to continue using one. So, I went with the wedge and hammer combo. As you know, most of the wedges have a hard time bite into very hard wood. you need something with a sharp point to get things started. So, I bought this because it has a sharp tip and unlike a hand axe, is made to take a pounding from the back. Guess what, it has such a perfect weight to length ratio, I started developing great aim and can now split smaller logs with one swing with this. I wish Estwing makes a big maul. I am now in the market for a 8 lb splitting maul for some heavy logs. Highly recommend you pick up this handy little splitting axe.
