Great guitar. Love the pickups and the whole vibe. I marked a con as poor quality and craftsmanship, but that sounds a little harsh. The only issues I had with the guitar were mainly set up issues. They had the floyd down so tight to the body that it was scratching on the body making using the tremolo a nightmare. Easy fix. raised up the posts and all good now. Then I still couldn't get the thing to stay in tune after using the bar at all and through inspecting I found that the bots holding the nut in place wer both really loose. Tightened them up and problem fixed. Not really a quality issue in my opinion. I'm sure the wood just had movement from the time it was boxed up. The pickup selector switch is a bit finicky. It will cut out when swapping to the bridge ... MoreGreat guitar. Love the pickups and the whole vibe. I marked a con as poor quality and craftsmanship, but that sounds a little harsh. Other than those issues Its a killer player and I love the sound. Finish looked much better in person as well. Wasn't totally sure about the blue burl, but Its awesome.

I bought this shortly after purchasing the slime green one. The green 5150 played so well I just wanted another one! Lol! Actually, what I really wanted was to give an EVH 5150 with the ebony fingerboard a try since I already had the maple board, so that meant getting this satin black-finished one. I am SO glad I did! This one sounds even better than the green one and, after a good setup (including some nut work), plays almost as well as the green one - falls just shy of it, but still a fantastic playing guitar! But back to the sound, this satin black 5150 is a beast! I'm not sure if it's due to the ebony fingerboard or the lack of a gloss coat over the black body, but it just has a great tone and attack! I perceive it to have more bottom and mid-range than the green one. It has the feel of a very high quality instrument and plays so smoothly. Makes a great stable mate to the green one and I am grateful to have both. I think I am in the process of converting from Gibson to EVH. They're just extremely fun to play, they sound great, play great, feel like high quality and, each day I play one, it inspires me to play beyond how I played the day before! That's worth every penny in my book!

I know that Eddie has been through many pickups throughout the years. These are very good, and seem to work well for everything. Not too hot and just the right bit of midrange. Nitpicks are that it doesn’t come with a bag or case. And Eddie liked the pickup selector reversed, which this one does not. But that is a small fix. And something about the finish just looks cheap. Maybe that is just something to do with the purple daze finish….

Great guitar, arrived perfectly set up and the neck is perfect. I was really surprised by the quality of this guitar and has become my daily player even amongst custom shop fender and Gibsons. The volume knob and tone knobs are incredible smooth, I think the pots are better than my custom shop gibsons

Perfect 80s-ness
2 April 2023

Looks, plays and feels great. So 80s it hurts, and that's a good thing. Only one complaint - the trem is setup pulled all the way back to be against the body (the way Eddie wanted it). The problem is the D-tuna bumps against the body when you pull it out. I set up my Floyds to be floating so it's not an issue for me, but just wanted to give fair warning.

Very impressed with this guitar. The neck has a great feel and well set-up for playing fast and note bends, especially in the upper register. Sustain is impressive for a sub £1k guitar and there is probably enough grunt from the factory pickups for most players. The low friction volume and high friction tone are a nice thing to have and am considering adapting my other working guitars with this.Using the D-Tuna was a learning curve as you can't use the fine tuner once set at drop D (well, you can tweak the tuning on the D-Tuna itself once set in the standard tuning position). If you don't fancy using it you can always swap it out with the supplied kit.The kill button is fun and I'm sure I'll get good use of it in time but I do keep brushing it when hammering out ... MoreVery impressed with this guitar. Possibly due to my large hands but worth noting that if you splay you strumming hand when playing, you may end up with a scuff bruise or two.All told, I'm very happy with this new addition to my string family.

The Truth About This Guitar
28 June 2022

The good: You get specs that are fun and usable in the kill switch and D Tuna, comfortable body shape (much more comfy than the Wolfgang IMO/more strat like). Super smooth slick and slim neck with beautifully rolled fingerboard edges. Thinner feeling neck than the Wolfgang Special. You also get solid hardware, big frets and an Ebony board. The Not so Good: None of these guitars are set up. There is not even an attempt or effort to intonate before shipping. The bridge is just put on strung up and shipped with saddles in a straight line pushed forward. All of the EVH guitars at 3 GC's were like this. The bridge doesn't sit flush on the body of the guitar either, meaning the D Tuna is useless unless you block the trem for dive only. The bridge doesn't sit flush on the body of the guitar either, meaning the D Tuna is useless unless you block the trem for dive only. There isn't anyway to do this with the guitar as is, so you have figure that out after. I feel like they should include a trem stopper or piece of wood from the factory. They are literally selling you a D Tuna that will not work off the jump (setup or not), and likely lead to frustration and returns. Then unless you are familiar with how to set up the D Tuna you will never get it in tune. This isn't set up from the factory either. Watch YouTube videos for how to do it, it's not intuitive to just jump in and start working at it. Because I bought from GC store, that means it didn't have any paperwork or setup wrenches with it. I was lucky they had the trem arm... but I expected that. What did I do: I blocked the trem with a small piece of particle board for dive only, intonated the bridge (intonation tool for floyd is a life saver here), and watched 4 YouTube videos before I found one that properly and thoroughly explained how to set the D-Tuna. Now the guitar is amazing. If you get this guitar and can't play in tune, check the intonation and learn the D Tuna system... the key is the trem MUST be blocked to drop only and you tune the standard note with the set screw on the D Tuna when setting up.The guitar is great now after the proper setup to get it to play in tune and the D Tuna set up. However, I couldn't recommend this to a friend unless they were looking for these exact specs (D Tuna, and kill switch) and were comfortable with setting up guitars. Also, if you don't want a D-Tuna stock and kill switch, there are as good or better guitars for way less.

This is the best guitar I have ever played in 30+ years
12 July 2021

Came setup, I wont change anything. Needs nothing! The neck is the best neck I have ever experienced, it plays like butter. Difficult runs are easy on this guitar and it is super light but the sound of this is truly amazing! Thunderous lows and sparkling highs at the same time! This is the do it all axe! I am buying another one. It's that good. Just get one! I have a ridiculous amount of highest end guitars from Gibson, Fender, Ibanez and more. I am thinking about selling most of them because I wont play them now.

Great guitar. Plays like butter. My biggest problem is that the Floyd Rose bridge goes out of tune every time I use the tremolo ( actually comes out of the body). Even with me buying the protection plan I keep getting told that my only option is to pay more money and get the bridge replaced and re-setup. Very disappointed with this whole experience.

Hands down the best playing , sounding and feeling guitar I have ever played. Seriously everything EVH learned about guitars over his career is implemented in this guitar. All top quality parts inside and out. I literally have nothing negative to say. I have always wanted to change something on my guitars but not this one. No upgrades needed.
