Used a big hefty maul for decades, but my better half has had the size M version of this for a few years as it's better sized and weighted (and I've been using it as a big hatchet) and it's obviously a good piece of kit. So, I figured the combination of great quality head and very light shaft - but in a size that suits my height - would be worth trying, for everything that doesn't require the weight of my maul. And I was right.I'm pretty tall (c.6'5"),and tend to chop on a stump that's only a few inches high, so wanted a long shafted axe. I'm not that clumsy, but it only needs to happen once...Super-light shaft, easy to grip, sharp, well shaped head with flared cheeks for splitting the grain: does the work for you. How well it fits you is up to you, but if it's the right fit - heartily recommended.

I've had a few different axes, mauls over the years. Decided to take the plu ge and look for an axe that required less effort.Read lots of reviews, visited stores to try different brands. The fiskars x27 stood out. Its so much easier to use, less vibration through the handle.I would certainly recommend this axe. I've had a few items off ffx, yet again they didn't dissapoint. Great service

Researching online the X27 and x25 came up a lot. I was looking at the Maul thinking heavier would be easier. I have a 2kg Block splitter which I thought was good. I split a couple of rounds with it then used the Friskars X27. Immediately the effort was at least 1/3 less with the same size, same tree, same age rounds. I was actually surprised that I was splitting almost as easily as I saw the guys on youtube doing comparison videos. It really does work better than any axe or splitter I've used.

Fiskars axes are ‘78 Kingswoods on open roads while all other axes are ‘87 compact hatchbacks driven in winter commuter traffic. They are David Lee Roth when all other axes are Phil Collins. Fiskars axes are tight black jeans and white basketball boots while other axes are pastel sweaters and boat shoes. Let your inner mullet blow free with Low vibration, crazy splitting power, great balance, good handle and grip. Head and shoulders above the competition. I’m talking simply awesome.

Fiskars X27 Heavy Duty Splitting Axe XXL
1 March 2019

I was recommended this product by a friend who splits a lot more firewood than I do. He also urged me to get the XXL length rather than the XL to avoid whacking my own shins at the end of one's swing arc (I am 180cm tall with average arm length). Its first task was to reduce a very mixed pile of coarsely cut wood, both greenish and well seasoned, to chunks suitable for my wood stoves. The X27 makes very light work of cured sections, but struggles to cope with wood that is the least bit green or with twisted grain, for example sections of Leyland cedar. It takes a knack to work this axe efficiently a keen aim is more productive than brute strength. All that said, it's still far better than a splitting tool propelled by a heavy mallet. Especially since it doesn't get hopelessly stuck in a log it can be fairly easily prised out if necessary. Build quality, as you would expect with a Finnish steel head and an unsnappable handle, is excellent.

Good Axe
18 September 2021

I needed to replace a handle on my old axe, looking at the cost of the handles it made more sense to buy a new axe. I noticed the 25 yr warranty on the Fiskars axe and figured that they must think it to be pretty special. I go through axe handles every couple of years, figured it might be cheaper in the longer term to spend more in the short term (plus it is a pain replacing axe handles). Very impressed with the Fiskars axe. Sharp like a knife, longer and lite handle makes it easy to swing, the handle is very tough (no dings or dents splitting hardwoods). The wood pile is full and I am happy.

Great for splitting big logs with ease
11 October 2021

Really good, lightweight axe that cuts through thick logs beautifully. The fibreglass handle makes for a nice weight that is not too heavy, and it's a nice length to allow for a good grip and and technique to split even old, gnarly logs. As long as you are using the proper technique, it is very easy to use. Nice sharp axe blade and looks great too. It also comes a great price point too. Highly recommend.

Perfect splitting axe
24 July 2019

I did a lot of research into splitting axes and mauls and Fiskars products consistently were the ones people seemed to rate the highest. However, there is no magic one tool does everything. There are similarly designed splitting axes from other brands. And the Fiskars axe comes in two sizes. This, the X27, is the larger (longer) one. I'm not tall nor built like a rugby player and would say this is the length most people would need to chop and split wood. If you buy the shorter version you will need a raised chopping block and if you miss strike be careful where the axe is heading for! Longer is safer. It feels the perfect length for me. It is light, well balanced and easy to control. I overshot my first attempt and it did not leave a mark on the shaft. This is perfect for splitting logs. Not for breaking up big rounds. For that you'll need a maul and I would highly recommend the Fiskars builders axe model 1020220.

The best axe at the price point for chopping wood.
3 December 2020

The Fiskars X27 is in my opinion the best Axe for somebody who wants to split firewood efficiently at an affordable price. It is light, powerful and, well quite simply is as good at anything I have tried at splitting wood. The best thing about this axe though is the weight, while other mauls may split an individual piece as well, after 20 minutes you will be exhausted. With this axe I can go on a lot longer, not saying it makes splitting wood easy, but certainly easier! Also what I love about the product is that I have found that because the angle between the head an the blade is quite large, it tends not to get stuck in the wood like many axes (which can take a while to clear and potentially cause injuries). There will be some who want to spend 3 to 4 times the amount on a Swedish axe, and I am definitely not saying these are not great Axes, of course they are. And if owning a finely crafted axe is important and you can afford it, then go for it. But for me my aim was to split wood and I find the X27 compares with even the most expensive of axes. There will be others that think the X27 is still a lot for an axe, and yes there are some very decent axes out there for a lower price. In my experience these axes are not as good as an X27, but guess it depends on how long your will use the axe for.

fiskars x27 . Hollow handle causes vibration in fingers after impact.
8 June 2022

I bought this in May 2022 and was looking forward to splitting my wood. The handle is hollow! I did not notice that in store. I was in a hurry. So the impact of the hit goes straight into your hands. I had tingling fingers the next day still and could not hold a pen properly. I should have thought of that before buying.A solid wooden hickory handle will soften the impact and will not cause vibration.

Fiskars Splitting Axe XXL X27

$150.00

(1,108 reviews)

With the Fiskars Splitting Axe X27, you can always keep going. It has a wedge-shaped axe head and an extra long handle for more efficiency when cleaving thick tree trunks. The axe head has a layer of Teflon, so it doesn't offer much resistance. In addition, the handle is made of plastic and glass fiber. That makes is more sturdy and durable than an axe with a wooden handle. The axe head is locked in the handle, so it offers maximum guarantee that the head won't fly off. Thanks to the weight of only 1830g, this 96.3cm long axe is easy to hold. As a result, it's easy to cleave heavy tree trunks and timber with the X27.
