Im a retired professional photographer who just shoots for fun now. But Im still pretty picky about my equipment. I own two Fuji bodies, a small, lightweight XT-20, a medium size X-T2 and an assortment of 10 Fuji lenses, both primes and zooms. This little lens is amazing considering what it sells for. The image quality is quite good; its especially sharp at wide angle focal lengths across the entire frame, with good contrast. My copy is very nearly as good as my 18-55, and has the more versatile 16mm (24mm equivalent) wide angle. This lens makes a great lightweight combo with the X-T20. The build quality is consumer grade, but that shouldnt be a problem for most people who take reasonable. The OIS is just OK and its not weather resistant. But, heck, its still an ... This is the 'economy' level (as are all XC model lenses) kit zoom lens for Fuji X-mount cameras. Remarkable performance for the money, especially used. Remarkably it is only marginally less sharp at some apertures and focal lengths than the XF version, which at 18-55 mm, also has a slightly different zoom range. This lens is also lighter weight, lacks an aperture ring, and has only a plastic mount! If anything, that is its only weakness. Examples with damaged mounts can be found on Ebay. First, let me say the five star rating is based on the value of this lens when bought in a kit. I already had a XF 18-55 when I got this lens in a kit. The physical difference is obvious. Slower, plastic construction, no aperture ring, and a relatively cheap feel. It does not have the pride of ownership of the 18-55. That said, it is optically quite good. Head to head with the 18-55, it acquits itself quite well. You have to get into the extreme enlargement category to to see that the 18-55 is a little sharper. I really liked extra wide angle and the slight loss of telephoto isn't missed at all. Overall, this is a great picture taker, and for a C note over the price of a body only it's an outstanding value. In the overall scheme of things, I would recommend getting ... MoreFirst, let me say the five star rating is based on the value of this lens when bought in a kit. Having had a decent SLR camara for many years, once things went digital I couldn't afford to replace my collection of bodies and lenses, so I had to make do with cheap digital camaras and mobile phones. When I decided to upgrade, I read that many professional photographers were leaning towards mirrorless camaras because of their relative lightness and the potential to take pictures without that 'cerlunk' sound, making it more discreet, and ideal for wildlife photography. They are also considerably cheaper. Although easy to use, to get the most out of the Fujifilm X-A10, you really have to study the instructions. Not something us men like to do. This is a basic general purpose zoom lens. I like that it is 16mm at the wide end as that is 24 mm equivalent on my XM1. The lens mount is plastic and provides a snug fit. The auto focus works fine for my use. The lens is a featherweight so great for hiking and causal photo work. Happy with this purchase
I have owned all three of the wide to standard mm zooms. The most expensive is the XF 16-55mm f2.8 ($1200) and is the largest, heaviest, best built of the three that produces wonderfully sharp images. If you absolutely must have a constant aperture, fast f2.8 this is your only option and it is a good one, but expensive. The lesser expensive XF ($500+/-) is the XF 18-55mm f2.8-4. Includes OIS and takes sharp images as well, though not as sharp wide open as the much more expensive XF 16-55mm. This XC 16-50mm (as cheap as $150 used) takes as sharp images as the XF18-55mm. You do give up a heftier build and a faster shutter, but the images are still beautifully sharp. I've been using the Fuji X-E1 with Fuji 18-55 zoom lens (a fantastic lens by itself). But I needed a wider reach and I've been eyeing this 16-50 XC zoom lens for some time now, but I wasn't reach to pay the $399 retail if you purchased it separately (and they're hard to find separately). Then I saw it for a fantastic price on eBay (somebody who separated it from their camera), so I purchased it. Considering that this lens is made out of plastic (with the exception of the optics of course), I didn't expect much - but wow, was I pleasantly surprised. This is a very sharp lens and provides a very welcomed 24 MM reach on the wide end of things. The color renditions and contrast levels are superb, in my opinion. And I could see no discernible difference between the Image Quality (IQ) of this 16-50 from the much more expensive 18-55, which has a much better build quality. So I never thought I'd say this, but I'm keeping this Fuji 16-50 XC lens permanently on my X-E1 - it's that good, and I don't say that without really meaning it. So I made out big time, spending only $168 for this lens on eBay (yes, it was new). But price aside, I highly recommend this lens. Ben Herrmann Fuquay Varina, NC
The Good: - it is light - very light. Especially when compared to the 18-55mm f/2.8-4.0 or 16-55mm f/2.8 - It is sharp, especially when the Fuji JPG engine us used (i.e. not shooting RAW but JPG) - it has a wide 24mm equiv. when zoomed in and a nice 75mm equiv for portraits when zoomed out - it has image stabilisation - it works very well - it is great value, especially when bought second hand or included as a kit lens - it is super silent when focusing - it is very accurate when focusing - this mk2 version focuses closer than the old mk1ersion The Not so Good: - no aperture ring - not really a problem as the camera dial on the back does the same thing - fairly standard speed for a kit zoom @ f/3.5 - 5.6 - a constant f/4 would have been better but that would make it ... Overall. Excellent all rounder for a good price. Not for fast action, extreme bokeh or very low light work due to the slow aperture, but you can always crank up the ISO to compensate for some of this as the latest Fuji cameras are pretty good in this respect. I have used the more expensive 18-55mm f/2.8-4 but I prefer this one as it weighs less, is wider and seems to focus faster. Pic is unedited straight out the camera, using a Fuji X-E2 and this excellent lens (@16mm).
From a journeyman's point of view, assuming you want a powered zoom lens this one seems great for the money to me. My pictures and videos so far have turned out great, the two-speed zoom could be quieter but it's not too loud. In videos you can hear the motor some but it's not bad, and it also allows for dramatic smooth zoom in and outs on like faces while people talk while easily holding the camera stable which is fun. it also has a "manual"-ish ring you can use that allows you to zoom in steps, which can be useful if you want the exact same zoom, but it's a lot lurchier and a bit slower than an actual manual zoom. My only real caveat is if you're specifically looking for a zoom lens in the 16-50mm range that can zoom in and out completely silently and also really ... This lens was also relatively cheap, and very light and small so it keeps your fuji pack small and light which makes it great for walking around a lot with and doing some street or cameo shots and videos (which is what I primarily use it for). I have a nikon d5300 as well and the size and weight difference between the two with a similar lens is quite noticeable.
