The FUJINON XF70-300mmF4-5.6 R LM OIS WR is a versatile telephoto zoom lens that is ideal for a wide range of applications, from wildlife and sports photography to landscape photography. With its impressive focal length range of 70 to 300mm (equivalent to 107-457mm in 35mm format), it offers exceptional reach in a compact and lightweight design. The optical construction comprises 17 elements in 12 groups, including an aspherical lens and two ED elements, which effectively minimise chromatic aberrations and other optical errors. With a length of just 132.5 mm, a diameter of 75 mm and a weight of only 580 g, the lens is surprisingly handy and an ideal complement to standard zooms such as the XF16-80mmF4 R OIS WR. Together they cover an impressive zoom range from 24 mm to 457 mm (KB equivalent). The integrated optical image stabiliser (OIS) compensates for camera shake of up to 5.5 f-stops, enabling sharp images even at long focal lengths or in poor lighting conditions. In combination with cameras with five-axis image stabilisation, such as the Fujifilm X-T4 or X-S10, the stabilisation is improved even further to effectively compensate for even linear movements such as panning. For even greater reach, the XF70-300mm can be used with the Fujinon XF1.4X TC WR and XF2X TC WR teleconverters, extending the focal length up to 630mm and 914mm (KB equivalent) respectively. The fast and quiet autofocus is based on a linear motor and harmonises perfectly with the advanced AF systems of the Fujifilm X series, making the lens a reliable companion for demanding photographers. The FUJINON XF70-300mmF4-5.6 R LM OIS WR combines exceptional image quality, flexibility and portability in a compact telephoto zoom - ideal for photographers looking for versatility and performance.

A neat little lens

I love the light weight and smaller size of this lens, after having used the larger and heavier 100-400mm for the past couple of years. This lens, plus my new camera (X-T5) plus the 1.4 teleconverter together weigh less than the 100-400mm lens alone! I had imagined it would feel plasticky and not substantial being so light, but it doesn't. I believe it can produce a sharp image, but I'm no great photographer, and I've mostly used it with the 1.4 teleconverter in poor light so can't really confirm that as my images have a lot of noise at high ISO although the subjects (birds mainly) do look quite sharp till zoomed in. I like that the lens can be locked closed but easily opened again when required. It may be that I just need to learn to hold it differently but I keep nudging it onto a different aperture which can be annoying! It comes with a lens hood which is great for protecting the front element. Overall, very pleased with this lens.

Astonishingly high quality optical performance.

With Jpeg or the default corrections to RAW, it will resolve between individual pine needles at the edges and corners of the field at pixel level, and without obvious distortion or chromatic abberation. Image stabilization is outstanding, and auto focus performance is fast and quiet. Tracking accuracy comes down to which algorithm you use, as expected with Fuji X system. The out of focus quality is very nice. No reason not to use it wide open as its quite sharp at the center and reasonably so at the corners. Lens is also reasonably light, and build quality seems very good. I'm getting much better images than from full frame DSLRs (similar pixel count) from five or so years ago and tele zoom glass that cost much more.

To start, I’m a graphic designer and relatively new to the photography scene so this isn’t a technical review. This lens blew my expectations out of the water. I own the Fuji 23mm 1.4 LM, Sigma 30mm, and Fuji 18-55mm and I love them all for their unique abilities, however this has quickly become my new favorite lens. The sharpness across the board is amazing, great background blur on subjects and the ability to photograph wildlife without getting too close and sacrificing quality makes this a forever keeper in my book. The price point is great and it’s compact enough to travel with. Can’t wait to take it to Disney World this summer.

Excellent Telephoto Lens
28 November 2022

I purchased this lens as an upgrade to my Fuji 55-200mm. I feel that it is a better companion to my Fuji 16-80mm as it has less overlap on the short end and gives me the extra reach on the long end.In terms of size and weight it is only about a half inch longer than the 55-200mm and weighs about the same. Even so, I do not feel that this lens is of any lower build quality.Optically this lens is easily on par with my Fuji 100-400mm over the same range. About my only minor complaint would be its bokeh characteristics. It is a bit swirly and nervous unless the background is really out of focus (i.e very distant).

Excellent lens that is already getting a lot of use
16 August 2022

Really pleased with this lens. It covers a very useful range and the image quality throughout is excellent. It is fairly light and handles well with my XT2. I purchased a UV filter go with it as I felt the front of the lens is somewhat vulnerable. A just in case thing as if the lens cap fell off in the bag it could get scratched rather easily. It works well for portraits and even "macro" images. My only criticism is that the f stops are not marked on the ring which just seems a daft thing to do.

Fuji 70-300 - the right lens for me
1 June 2022

I have waited for this lens for quite sometime and have not been disappointed at the IQ. I tried using the Tamron 18-300, but the IQ for me was sometimes lacking in sharpness. Others may be satisfied ... I believe it is subjective. I also like having the aperture ring vs using the back command dial to set the aperture. It's all about what placement of that control YOU want. This goes perfectly with my XF 16-80 as a travel pair and I also have the option of purchasing the 1.4 teleconverter LATER after I perfect my technique above 100 mm focal length. The right lens for me, but do not let my review bias you against the Tamron. To each their own ....

Lightweight and very capable telephoto
18 August 2021

I purchased this lens to use with my Fuji X-T3 for general nature photography and travel as a possible replacement for my XF 55-200. Key factors were the longer maximum focal length, improved close focus and improved OIS at the same weight and similar size (with the inner barrel retracted). The lens exceeded my expectations optically, delivering noticeably sharper and more contrasty images than the 55-200 on both tripod tests and in the field. The bokeh is also very pleasant unless there are lots of fine branches or specular highlights in the background. The close focus feature is wonderful for insects and small animals, allowing you to fill the frame from almost 3 feet away (1:3 magnification). The close focus feature is wonderful for insects and small animals, allowing you to fill the frame from almost 3 feet away (1:3 magnification). Textures and fine details like scales, bristles, antennae, compound eyes, etc are very well resolved. This is definitely a very fun lens to use for walk-around critter photography! My only minor quibbles with the lens are relatively minor: inconsistency in tightness/damping of the focus and zoom rings, and the relatively noisy AF and OIS motors compared to other Fuji lenses. Regarding the rings, the focus ring is very under-damped compared to the 55-200 and most Fuji zooms, easily turning with the slightest touch. On the other hand the zoom ring is very tight, requiring a fair bit of force to turn. This is my second copy of the lens - the first was delivered in a damaged box (from another vendor) and may have been compromised, but it had an even looser focus ring and tighter zoom ring than this copy. Some online reviews report both rings are loose, so there may be inconsistencies in manufacturing. The aperture ring is similar to the 18-55 and 55-200 in friction (medium) and unmarked, due to the variable aperture. Overall the feel of the rings and plastic construction are underwhelming at this price point, but the reduction in weight is very welcome so it's a compromise I can live with.Regarding the noisy AF and OIS, the linear motors making a very clear clunking sound and vibration when engaging, which is much more noticeable than the 55-200 (or 50-140 for that matter). When operating, there are lots of high pitched chirps. You get used to the noises pretty quickly, but it's worth noting for anyone contemplating shooting video with this lens and an on-camera mic. I also miss the OIS on/off button from the 55-200. You need to use the camera menus to disable OIS when on a tripod, or trust the tripod detection to disable it.In all, I think I'll be happy to replace my trust XF 55-200 with this new lens, and enjoy the light weight, great zoom range and optical quality despite it's few quirks.

Outstanding Zoom Lens

I have been using the Fuji 55-200 lens for the past few years and it was a very good lens but lacked weather proofing for travel. When the 70-300 was released I jumped on it and it has met every expectation. I shoot a lot of cloud and landscape photos as well as animals. This lens while heavier than the previous lens...is still light compared to my earlier longer zooms from Canon or Tamron. It balances well on my XT-4 and though I have only had it a short time....appears sharp at all focal lengths with minimal distortion. It in short is just a great lens and one of the reasons why I have never looked back after switching to the Fuji system. I have reduced my travel kit to the XF 16-80mm; XF 50mm F2 and now the XF 70-300mm. I have reduced my travel kit to the XF 16-80mm; XF 50mm F2 and now the XF 70-300mm. Really do have the range I shoot at most, covered with 3 lenses. All three are capable of good portrait shots. Perhaps the only thing missing is a faster aperture...but I have not been shooting that type of photo lately.

Stellar telephoto option that's affordable!

Overall: If you want to expand your reach beyond the kit lens, this telephoto zoom lens is an great choice.Build Quality/Size: This lens is weather resistant (WR) and adds peace off mind when shooting in the dusty, rainy conditions. Considering its zoom range of 70mm-300mm it is fairly compact and weighted nicely, not too heavy nor too light. Comes with a good size plastic lens hood that will prevent any unnecessary sun flares. Zoom ring is fitted with a tactile rubber grip, and it turns smoothly without being overly tight. The manual focus on the other hand feels loose while turning, it is very smooth as your turn it, but definitely the least resistant I've felt compared to all the other Fuji lenses I own (10-24, 18-55, & 50 f/2). Not really an issue because I ... MoreOverall: If you want to expand your reach beyond the kit lens, this telephoto zoom lens is an great choice.Build Quality/Size: This lens is weather resistant (WR) and adds peace off mind when shooting in the dusty, rainy conditions. Not really an issue because I would rarely use manual focus anyways.Image Quality: The Images I get out of this lens is sharp with beautiful separation from the subject and the background. Bokeh is pleasing and smooth, it is very easy to isolate your subjects to give it that "professional" look. This lens has fast autofocus, even paired with my ancient Fuji X-T1.Features:OIS: The optical stabilization works really well, very quiet, and aids in nailing that sharp photo especially in the longer focal lengths because camera shake is even more pronounced the longer the zoom is. Since this is a newer Fuji lens there is no ON/OFF Switch in the lens body, it must be turned on/off in the camera.WR: Pair this lens with a weather sealed camera body and you can tackle pretty much any shooting conditions without much worry.Zoom Lock: The lens is equipped with a LOCK SWITCH on the lens body (prevents the barrel from extending when not in use) A common feature on most zoom lenses with barrel extending zooms, but the neat thing with their implementation of this feature is that it auto unlocks once your start moving the lens barrel. My previous 18-200 Nikon Zoom had this lock switch but it required you to manually unlock it each time - which can be costly when it comes to capturing fleeting moments in photography.Autofocus Limiter: The lens can be left on FULL (the autofocus system will go through the whole focus range as it tries to nail focus or you can leave it on 5m to infinity. Useful feature in specific scenarios. Its a nice touch considering its not a "red badged" professional XF Zoom lens.Things to consider: It is a variable aperture lens, so at 70mm it is f/4 which is nice and bright, but as you zoom to 300 the widest aperture is f/5.6Misc Thoughts:Pair this with the Fuji 16-80 and you have a 2-lens kit that has OIS, WR and covers 16mm-300mm focal length. This lens is great for portraiture, also for macro type of shots, and anything that requires you to get closer to your subjects such as wildlife, bindings, sports, etc.The last two images I included shows the zoom capability from 70mm to 30mm.

Yes, buy it now!
29 April 2023

I purchased this lens along with a new X-T5. I am stunned at what a great combination this is. In my 70's, I have a number of chronic health issues that make weight an important consideration. I was looking for a good telephoto lens that was as light as possible but still was very sharp. I am so happy with this lens. It meets all my requirements: it is reasonable to carry; it is very sharp; and it produces great images. I would highly recommend this lens.
