This Garmin GPS was purchased for use in connection with a new cycle. I have several other Garmin GPS models but none would fit the new bike and none would assist with my low key fitness program. The package arrived with dead batteries in each of the 3 sensors and I had to wait for replacements to arrive before I could begin setting everything up. Overall setup has proved problematic; connections between phone, sensors and GPS has sometimes taken 30 minutes or more to complete, often requiring forgetting devices and re-instating them. But.....once set up and happy, the 1030 plus has been a joy to use. Battery life is very good for the riding I do and it is clear that an 8 hour ride would be no problem on a single charge. I’m pleased that I have the 1030 plus but at this price point it should not be so difficult and finnicky. Once set up it should stay set up and the fact that it doesn’t, really detracts from the overall pleasure. No issues with Sigmasports, they delivered next day and I would happily purchase from them again. The issue is with Garmin, the cost of the unit and the fact that it cannot seem to connect reliably to my phone at the start of each ride.

I’m a road cyclist, participate in sportives and longish training rides. I have a Stages power meter and Di2 gears/sensor as well as the usual heart rate cadence and speed sensors, so like largish screens that can display several items of information live, and a device that also enables me to analyse the sensor data.I bought the 1030 a month ago after my Edge 1000 stopped working - specifically, the rubber waterproof cover for the on/off button had split a while ago and the switch eventually gave up such that I couldn’t turn the device on or off. I enquired about repairs but decided that probably wouldn’t be a good use of my cash so researched the options and decided to go for the 1030 rather than 830 for the extra features, great screen and familiarity.I’ve ... Garmin seem to have improved connectivity - it picked-up (and continues to pick-up) my bike sensors much quicker than the 1030 did, it works perfectly with my iPhone and updates to Strava without delay or the need to access WiFi. And the little design and functionality niggles with the 1000 have been fixed. For instance, the on/off button and cover for charging point on the 1030 are much better, the touch screen is more responsive, the battery lasts twice as long so is fine for the longest of rides (I had the “20% battery life left” on the 1000 towards the end of L’Étape and the Dragon) and while I’ve yet to make real use of the course and mapping features the reviews suggested these were also improved vs the 1000. In sum, worth the cost

This is my third or fourth Garmin which I use for cycling. I wanted a device that would provide a good map, download routes and rides easily, give me turn by turn directions, and provide adequate battery for 4-5 hour rides. My previous Garmin was the Edge 1000 which under-performed from the very beginning (low battery life, hit and miss on syncing with Garmin Connect, failed auto start most times). The Edge 1030 so far has performed impeccably. Figuring out the data screens took some time and I am still working on that. This device has multiple functions that I do not use so figuring out how to disable or ignore them requires manual reading. Battery life running a course or route has been good so far. Quite pleased with this device so far.

Garmin make great GPS products for a variety of sports, but they come at an inflated price and they are not without issues. From a week of intense mtb riding the Edge 1030 Plus is certainly a step above my previous software problematic Edge 1030, but not sure if it's as good as the Hammerhead Karoo 2 or not. From all the reports I've read, the Karoo wins by a margin. My problem was that I didn't have enough time to wait for the Karoo to be delivered and stockists in Australia are nil, except direct. As I needed a new Garmin in a hurry, this is the way I went. Still this is an exceptional product through if the software glitches from my previous 1030 don't resurface.
Cycle Computer is a great addition for tracking your metrics.Packed with many features like Live tracking, which is great for someone else to monitor your ride, which I enjoy for safety. The Garmin Edge 1030plus is L 4 1/2" x W 2 1/4", which is about the same size as the older Garmin Edge 1000. The screen is bigger on the 1030 plus: 3" x 1 3/4", The edge 1000 screen is 2 1/2" x 1 1/2".On my Bike the 1030 plus sits nice inside my handlebar. The 1030 plus setup was easy, because I already had a profile, all my activities just crossed over. Good touch screen with gloves equipped with sensitivity, good battery life. The Garmin Edge 1030 Plus is a replacement for a four year old Edge 1000 that became unreliable - lost its Edge so to speak. The 1030 Plus is a huge step up.Physically it’s much more robust. The battery life is phenomenal and the processor is lightening fast compared to the 1000.It’s loaded with features. I recommend downloading and reading the manual to see how many and what they do. YouTube provides good insight as well.I miss the micro SD feature but with effort data (maps etc.) can be swapped out as needed using a computer and Garmin apps.
The Garmin Edge really begins to feel like it's matured to a point of having little more to develop. Used it most days since purchase and the features all feel better sorted and more intuitive than earlier device incarnations. It mainly just does what you want it to and doesn't require masses of effort to set it up.Battery life is excellent, the screen is very readable in all conditions with the auto brightness feature, turn by turn navigation works well on courses you've uploaded with no significant lag and it links extremely well to power meter and HR accessories. Sweeping between screens works well even with winter gloves.Whether the big screen and extra battery life are worth it over the 830 depends on your eye sight and how far you want to see maps ahead of ... Sweeping between screens works well even with winter gloves.Whether the big screen and extra battery life are worth it over the 830 depends on your eye sight and how far you want to see maps ahead of your current position. My only criticisms would be the loss of detail on the map as you zoom out and that I'm unable to work out whether you can pan across the map to plan a route while in the middle of navigating. It's also a bit clumsy drawing a course on the actual device, far easier on a laptop.
Why use a cycling computer over a phone? Primary, they are way more accurate at tracking for GPS. Zoom into any recorded ride done on a cell phone and look how it jumps around. Cell phone GPS are designed to get you were you are to where you need to go. Bike GPS do that, but also make sure to record where you've been much more accurately, giving much more accurate distance, speed, ect. Better battery life, more durable in crashes. The Garmin computers can sometime be finicky with software, but overall this is an amazing computer that will last years. Often times they go on sale at places, so wait for those. Definitely get a heart rate monitor and cadence sensor with it. A power meter will also help you get the most out of it.
What a disappointing lousy “upgrade” from my Edge 1000.Gradient change reaction times are ridiculously SLOW. Like 10-15 seconds slow to react to change in slopes! That’s crazy – for a flagship device.Bought the Edge 1030 ‘plus’ to replace a 1000, which was pretty decent at gradient reactivity, but its flimsy USB port broke eventually and the power on / off switch also. Planned obsolescence at its best here. Also sprang for the Varia radar 515.Who cares about all the bells and whistles if a key parameter of an expensive flagship cycling device is essentially hamstringed/hobbled??Btw – Girlfriend bought the Edge 830 and it is just as molasses crappy slow to react to any grade changes. If knowing your riding slope % in a timely manner is important for you – ... I cannot actually believe how good this device is. I have had a very faithful Garmin Edge 500 for the last ten years, never having missed a beat and still going strong. But to compare that to the Edge 1030 Plus is like comparing a Fiat Bambino to a Ferrari 812 Superfast. The advance in technology is stunning. I didn't really look at the manual too much ( but it was handy to know which button to press to start the ride ( ! ) - although I later selected the auto-start option when 10 km/h is reached ) and there seem to be things missing in the manual anyway, but I just patiently played around with the device a few times, over an hour or so, till I worked it out and from then on it became easy to find the way around. Being average only in computer stuff, it cannot be that hard if I can work it out.A few notable stand-outs ( there's so much to say I don't have time ) are the totally custom configurable ride screens, the on-screen warnings of sharp bends ahead, the ease with which sensors, like heart rate monitor and radar, are paired, the brilliant touchscreen, the way you can select the type of flash from your rear light ( if you have a Garmin light equipped radar ) on the touchscreen and, if you have the radar, the superb warnings of approaching rear traffic - the threats are made clear both by loud enough tones ( I'm half deaf ) and visually on screen. The larger screen ( which is quite a bit smaller than a typical modern mobile phone by the way ) really helps the long-sighted or those with otherwise less than perfect vision ( like me ).I have set my main ride screen to show exactly what I want and in the order I want : Distance, Speed, Calories, Heart Rate and Elapsed Time. I have another screen with more heart rate metrics shown. And other screens with other data. All user configurable and easily selected on the move by swiping the screens across.I have never looked at any other brands of cycle computer and I don't think I ever will. I expect Garmin has to be the best there is as this device is perfect.
