As a previous Edge 1030 Plus owner, I love having a large-screen Garmin computer. The 1030 Plus, though doesn't always make it easy to see the map in broad daylight, and it can be really slow in rerouting. The Edge 1050 solves these issues and more, even with a slight expense of battery life, which doesn't matter for me since I rarely ever ride longer than 12 hours. The biggest upgrade is certainly the brighter and more vivid screen. Not even the bright Southern California sun can overpower the display. Maps are just easier to read, and the added grade % profile really helps, as well. The resolution gets a bump so everything looks crisper and easier to read.On top of that, there's no lag with any swipes, pop ups, screen changes, etc. This 1050 is smooth like ... The speaker is louder and that helps a lot with the bell, navigation, and my Garmin RCT715 radar. The menu and OS is a big change from the 1030 Plus and I actually like it, too. There's not anything confusing with the layout and it just feels more intuitive to use.The other new data that I like as well is the Stamina, which helps you gauge how much you have left in your tank based on your history, your current metrics of HR, Watts (I have the Garmin Rally RS200 power meter pedals), speed, cadence, road grade, etc. I do feel that at any given point this has been accurate.Lastly, the one knock I do have for the Edge 1050 is that they moved forward the mounting point compared to the 1030 Plus, and THIS almost made the 1050 not fit on my current Garmin outboard mount. It rubs it slightly at one area, and in order for me to use a silicone case, I have to cut off the silicone part that covers the bottom buttons. I do know this is an issue with some other mounts.

There is no doubt that this computer is an outright splurge, but you’ll forget the price after the first time you use it. It is, in fact, easily better enough to justify the price. The screen is absurdly crisp, bright and easy to read. I need readers, but can’t find a good on-bike solution, so I’ve been relying on a 1040. This is far superior to the 1040, which is already amazing. The speaker is insane. I rely heavily on food and drink reminders, but I often wouldn’t quite hear the beeps on my other Garmins, so I’d miss feeds and constantly be doing math. You don’t miss the warnings from this speaker. The battery is exceptional. I’m connected to all the sensors all of us are - radar, headlight, HRM, AXS, Di2, power meters. I had an Edge 530 for the past 5 years and while it continued to work fine and the battery was good, I wanted something new. The 1050 has been incredible. The larger screen is vibrant and super easy to read. I find myself going on more routes that i would have in the past because the navigation is superb. I also like how easy i can customize the screens even on a ride. The one feature that would be nice is if you could have a full activity screen for the bell so its easier to use. I have 4 bikes i use and only one has the option to use the sram axs wireless button to connect to it, which is great but it would be nice for other bikes without wireless options. Outside of that which is nitpicking, i am really really happy with my purchase. Lastly the battery is ... This is my 4th Garmin bike computer, having owned Edge 500, 520 and 1030 Plus. The 520 was terrible - rerouting was particularly bad but it also crashed regularly. The 1030 was an improvement but it felt like Garmin abandoned it when the 1040 was released, and I was getting IQ app crashes and losing safety tracking on every ride. The 1050 is what a bike computer should be. Bright, sharp screen, reacts quickly to touch gestures, has an improved user interface and hasn't had any crashes with IQ apps or any other crashes. Battery life is fine for my needs - I did a 200km route and still had 50% charge left.Only complaint is the curved design of the screen edges means I have so far been unable to find a tempered glass screen protector. I had issues at first; mostly with uploading routes into it from RidewithGPS. They just wouldn't upload after pinning. Never had that problem with the Garmin. They would upload instantly upon pinning in RidewithGPS. So I tried using a cable. Garmin isn't including a regular USB to USBC cable and I didn't have one that would work. I fumbled around with a "charging-only" cable for several hours before deciding it wasn't going to transfer any data.So for the first 2week to 10 days, I had a pretty computer on my handlebars with couldn't follow a course. (my club publishes a course for every ride and up here in the mountains, it's absolutely necessary.)Well, I finally gave in and called Garmin tech support. (my club publishes a course for every ride and up here in the mountains, it's absolutely necessary.)Well, I finally gave in and called Garmin tech support. In short order, the support arranged for a factory USB to USBC cable to be sent to me. Once I had that, almost everything was good.Still can't pin a RidewithGPS course and have it appear in the 1050. Tech support said that he doesn't use it since it's "hit and miss" with "too many steps that are out of Garmin's control'. So I have learned how to download the course as a .fit file and then copy it from my desktop to the Garmin. That works every time. It IS a hassle compared to simply pinning and seeing it, but I'm getting better at the copying.I'm still fiddling with the display settings that I think will be good for me. I wish that there was a "Grade" and "Cadence" combined display. Also need to learn how to add power and cadence to a map display. For me, all three are needed without having to swipe through screens.Do I like it? Absolutely! The more I learn how to use it, the better I like it.
I bought this on launch day having read online previews and I’m not disappointed. Pinpoint GPS accuracy from Garmin Maps, uses the same Garmin Connect app as other models to download GPX files, with the added advantage of the upgraded software that warns of road features (sharp bends, junctions, pot holes). The information when going up steep hills is also very useful for timing gear changesI have paired this with the new Garmin radar and the two work extremely well together, it’s great to get advance notice of vehicles approaching from behind, I find this especially useful on the single track roads I use.The outfront holder sits rock solid on my handlebars and positions the unit perfectly to keep an eye on all data without taking your eyes off the road, the ... While mostly similar to the 1040, the screen is a ton better. That’s the obvious improvement. But maybe the bigger improvement is the audio… the voice. With my 1040 it seemed to be constantly beeping at me, and 2/3rds of the time I had. O idea why it was beeping unless I took the time to slow down, look down, and r sad the screen. And sometimes the “reason” had already cycled off the screen. As a mountain biker I found it incredibly annoying. Incessant beeping. The 1050 fixes that with voice commands for most of the important things. There is still plenty of room for improvement:* As a mountain biker, intersections are often challenging to navigate. The improved screen helps, but what would be better is a to have the course a thicker and consistent color. Magenta. Always. And no other trail or road would be magenta. Otherwise it’s a stop and stare and zoom exercise at pretty much all 3 way intersections.* The interface just isn’t that intuitive to me. I spend 10 minutes prior to every ride just trying to figure out how to get what I want on the screen.* it would be nice if it there was an option to announce (voice) the gear after a gear change. Or maybe flash it BIG on the screen (like the entire screen). Sometimes I feel like the devices are tailored to roadies with mountain bikers as an afterthought…. It can be very difficult if not impossible to look at the screen on a lot of trail sections. More voice.* maybe a screen option that uses half the screen for the map and the rest be user configurable? A lot of my riding is on trails I’ve never ridden before. It would be great to just have half the screen to help me with turns but the rest of the screen for my choice of data fields.
I’ve owned many Garmin cycling computers over the years but this one, the 1050 is the best yet. I recently decided to upgrade from my 830 to this model primarily due to the fact that I’ve upgraded to a bike with electronic shifting. This 1050 syncs with it and allows me to see gearing stats and battery levels. Initially, I thought the size of this 1050 was too large but after using it for about a week of daily riding, I’ve come to appreciate it. It displays an amazing amount of data with a display that’s easy on the eyes in any type of light. The battery on the 830 was amazing. The battery on the 1050 is excellent as well. This is my 7th Garmin Edge device and I have had about as many Garmin watches too. I do really enjoy how responsive this device is compared to every other device I have use. The screen contrast and brightness is really nice outside. It's basically just the same device as the 1040 though. There's a couple of pain points here.1) The 1050 doesn't fit several of my mounts that were just fine for my 1030+. These are mostly the first generation of the K Edge Max XL mounts that I had to buy when moving from a 530. A very high end one piece cockpit with an integrated mount. My TT cockpit. If the mounting tab on the Garmin unit was moved back 2-3 mm ALL of my mounts would work. It seems like they didn't test this unit on ANY existing mount when they decided where to put ... It seems like they didn't test this unit on ANY existing mount when they decided where to put their mounting tabs.2) The screen is useless without the backlight on. And obviously the backlight burns battery quicker. Just something to be aware of.3) I might be wrong, but the screen doesn't seem as tough as the normal ones. I only have a half dozen rides, but somewhere there's two noticeable scratches on my screen.4) In two weeks, it's already needed one hard power button hold (10 second hold) because it would not turn on with the normal press.5) The screen touch vs. swipe is something I can't seem to master. Using the workout screen where you have to swipe up pulls up the bell screen about 75% of the time. I just can't seem to get it right.6) Holy bezel. There's not a lot of screen compared to how gigantic this unit is.7) I wish different alerts could have different sound volumes. The turns seem really loud while the radar alerts seem a touch more quiet. Maybe that's just me. It looks like there's roughly 10 notches on the volume screen and I find anything below about 70-80% not really useful for outdoor riding.
Device functions work well. Problem is with software. Once more Garmin released a device before fully and completely debugging software. I am experiencing issues with software related to suggested workouts and lost a ride to a faulty/corrupted save. Be aware that when using Express app with Apple laptops/computers (Macs), you can NO longer access hard drive of Edge 1050 (no mass storage access). Also be aware that size of computer is bigger but not the screen, is exactly same size as Edge 1030. This is the most expensive Edge that Garmin has released. I wanted to upgrade from my Edge 1030 as software was no longer fully compatible with my Instinct 2X Solar. I hope Garmin fixes software issues soon. I wanted to upgrade from my Edge 1030 as software was no longer fully compatible with my Instinct 2X Solar. I hope Garmin fixes software issues soon. Not sure if there are more as I have been using the computer for about 20 days so far. Computer aesthetics are very nice, touch screen works really well. Altitude (live) measurements are great now (too slow with past devices). Great screen visibility (easier to see outdoors). Many of the new features that were not available with Edge 1030 are really good to have (power guide, climbs, etc) and I like that I can set-up and see performance stats and other data similar to what I can use and see with Connect. Another good thing is that computer mount can now be replaced. In past models, if mount was damaged/broken you had to send to Garmin to get it refurbished. Overall its a good upgrade for me and trust that Garmin will fix current and new software issues, just wish they were debugged before product launch.
