Overall I'm happy with the Instinct 2. I really like the looks and ruggedness of the watch as well as all the info that I can constantly have displayed including up-to-the-moment heart rate. My main frustration is that it won't track walking on a treadmill. From doing a search on the internet it seems that many people have this issue with Garmin's watches. Walking on a treadmill is my main type of exercise and I really wish it would work. I've tried using the "Walk" activity but that won't count distance because it is basing it on GPS apparently. So I made an activity by duplicating the Walking activity with GPS off but this counts only about a tenth of the distance that I walk on the treadmill (the same when I test it by walking outside with GPS off, though it ... So I made an activity by duplicating the Walking activity with GPS off but this counts only about a tenth of the distance that I walk on the treadmill (the same when I test it by walking outside with GPS off, though it counts my steps correctly) and the other 9/10's as stopped. So I tried the 'Treadmill Running' activity but it count's 90 percent of the time that I'm walking (with hands swinging naturally at my sides of course and not holding the handholds) as "Idle" even though I'm walking at 3 miles an hour. Thankfully walking outside with the normal "Walking" activity with GPS on is very accurate but in the winter I'm not able to walk outside everyday. I've even manually entered my walking stride into the app in case that made a difference but it didn't. Again, overall it's a good watch, however, being that I mainly walk on a treadmill it's not as ideal as I'd hoped.

I transitioned from my 3 year old Vivoactive 3 to the Garmin Instinct 2 and I'm in love.I hated the touchscreen on the vivoactive because many times when I went to look at my watch it was opened to settings and I was halfway through customizing a new background without even wanting to. Instinct isn't touchscreen so that problem is gone. The battery life was one of the biggest selling points for me, I go on 6 hour bike rides sometimes and 9 hour hikes often. The Vivoactive 3 could no longer keep up but the Instinct 2 has been GREAT. I went for a 3 hour walk and still had 26 days of battery left, which would have left my Vivoactive 3 50% through the battery. The user interface is different, but I somehow picked it up quickly. There's only 5 buttons and for the one of those buttons - for the most part - is solely for the backlight. I actually like the user interface a lot and haven't found it to be much of an issue. I was usually more confused on my Vivoactive 3 somehow. To each their own.The watch is just as customizable as the Vivoactive 3... but there are more features which makes it feel MORE customizable. I've been much happier with the set up I've been able to create on the Instinct 2 compared to Vivoactive 3. I will also say that I feel their preset screens for activities are better than Vivoactive 3, I haven't customized any of those. They were already displaying everything I was looking for.I'm also pleased with the heart rate monitor. It seems much more accurate than my old watch. For once my heart rate is NOT 90 while I'm lifting weights and squatting, which is very exciting It's still not perfect, of course, but it's better than the old one and noticeably so.Now there are a couple negatives. If you look at full stats screen on an activity, the circle on the screen will block your view of some stats. Mostly you can see all stats if you scroll through but this is very annoying and I really really hope they fix that...There are also only 1-2 analog display screens available and they are not good. I checked ConnectIQ and haven't found anything better on there. Perhaps I didn't look hard enough, perhaps they add it later.

I’ve had a Garmin instinct Solar first generation for quite awhile. I had been having some battery issues and had problems with sleep monitoring.Several months ago I had ordered a Garmin Instinct 2 Solar watch in mist gray from Best Buy. At that time I was thinking of alternating between the ok’d first generation watch and the new Instinct 2 Solar, using the older watch for yard work, etc., because of the very light almost white new watch. I thought it might start looking nasty. At that time I really didn’t know all the differences in the first and second generation watches. I ended up settling the new watch to factory settings and returning it to Best Buy.Recently, I saw the new Garmin Venu 3 at Best Buy. I got one because it really looked good. However, during ... I ended up settling the new watch to factory settings and returning it to Best Buy.Recently, I saw the new Garmin Venu 3 at Best Buy. I got one because it really looked good. However, during the setup process, I found out that it wasn’t for me. The Venu 3 appeared to be Garmin’s response to an Apple Watch. It did not have the traditional five buttons on the Instinct and most other series Garmin watches. It also had a lot of touchscreen actions, provisions for receiving and making telephone calls, etc. if I wanted all that stuff I would have gotten an Apple Watch. I reset to factory settings and returned the same day. I provided a review on that purchase and return.Next, I was watching YouTube videos and reviews of the Instinct 2 Solar and the Forerunner 265. I was checking on availability of both in my local area. I struck out at Best Buy so I checked at REI.I ended up getting a graphite color Instinct 2 Solar, which looks virtually the same as my old first generation Instinct Solar, which looks a lot like a Cassio GShock. Looks can be deceiving. It is what’s inside that counts. The sensors, improved solar charging, and much better analytics via Garmin Connect definitely makes this a very improved product.I’ve reset my first generation Instinct Solar and I’m going to turn it in at Best Buy for a $40 gift card.I like the sleep reports and more detailed analysis in Garmin Connect. I set up a battery percentage icon on the face. It appears to be holding the charge with solar exposure.I haven’t had enough days for HRV average.I also like the placement of the barometer/altimeter away from my wrist surface. It is very accurate so far. The first generation watch was crediting me with extremely large floor counts including adding floors virtually every time I went outside from the air conditioned car or house.

Always-on display is easy to read outdoors or inside if there's at least a little ambient light, otherwise the backlight can be used. This makes the watch far more useful for sports/exercise tracking where you don't want to have to flick your wrist and wait for the display to wake up before you can see anything. Default display contains all the info I want instant access to, but it is highly customizable if you want to see other info by default. Large bezel size, relatively light weight, and micro-adjustable wrist band (lots of holes) combine to enable the watch to get a reliable heart rate even while running without having to cinch down on the strap and make the watch uncomfortable. It doesn't flop around on your wrist like heavier metal-framed watches. The lack of a touchscreen prevents accidental inputs messing up your workout data if you happen to brush against the screen. The raised bezel should protect the watch from damage in most drops/impacts. In summary, this is a good watch for someone who primarily wants to track workouts and considers the smart-watch features to be secondary. If your priorities are the reverse, you'll probably be happier with one of the prettier AMOLED watches.
I never got in on the smart watches craze. I enjoy *real* watches that seem to have value 5-10-20 years down the road. Example, will the lithium batteries last forever/be replaceable on these "smart" devices? No telling. What I can say though is that for a digital watch, especially if you are a hiker or new to running, this is FUN to use!Two things:1) This watch "smartly" allows us to add equipment to a handful of activities. Let's say I have two pairs of running shoes that I alternate. The only thing we can't easily do is "clone" an activity or add a specific additional activity so that when we run the shoes will be tied to the variant of the activity. Let's say I have two pairs of running shoes that I alternate. The only thing we can't easily do is "clone" an activity or add a specific additional activity so that when we run the shoes will be tied to the variant of the activity. In other words, if you alternate shoes and use the amazing "equipment" feature, you will have to manually adjust your shoes each time on your phone before beginning your next activity. Better yet would be the option to clone activities and tie a shoe to a specific clone of an activity. Since "run" and "walk" are different categories, I am at least able to use different shoes for those individual categories. I would still enjoy seeing a "run 1" "run 2" where "1" and "2" could be tied to each pair of shoes. This may seem like a complaint, but it is not. It is just a note I wanted to mention somewhere in case someone is reading these and able to offer product suggestions up the design line.2) I enjoy my watch so much that we got another for my partner and both watches register different distances even though we track our neighborhood walk (to walk the pup) using the watch's GPS. Today my walk was something like 1 mile and my partner's Instinct 2 Solar S (the smaller one) registered something like .89 miles. Using GPS on both watches, how can they vary so much?3) I am so excited to see the data on my mobile device and also on the computer screen! How cool to hike a local state park and then see the terrain I crossed over and through, my corresponding pace, heart rate during elevation gains and on and on! I am so happy to have gotten into running recently during this time in history where a "basic digital watch" (by appearance and usability) can help me record and decipher so much information! I look forward to trekking out into the desert in Big Bend (Texas : ) and knowing confidently how much time 'till sunset, how to get back, etc. I tend to enjoy off trail hikes in the middle of nowhere more than anyone else I know and every so often I have guestimated my route back only to find that I had to retrace my steps a few times so I could pick the correct safe way back. Thanks Garmin! I hope someone checks out the points we made here and follows up somehow!Happy New Year!

The long-lasting power of the Instinct 2 is a game-changer and sets it apart from other smartwatches on the market. The heart rate tracker on the Garmin Instinct 2 is impressively accurate. Whether I'm working out at the gym or hiking in the great outdoors, it consistently provides reliable heart rate data. This feature has been invaluable in helping me monitor my fitness levels and make informed decisions about my training intensity. The precision and reliability of the heart rate tracker give me the confidence to push myself further and achieve my fitness goals. In addition to these standout features, the Garmin Instinct 2 offers a range of other useful functionalities. The built-in GPS is incredibly accurate and enables precise tracking of my outdoor activities, ensuring I never lose my way. The watch's durability is also worth mentioning—it can withstand the rigors of an active lifestyle, including harsh weather conditions and accidental bumps.Furthermore, the Instinct 2's intuitive user interface makes navigation a breeze. The menus are easy to navigate, and the watch face customization options allow me to personalize it to my liking. The clear display ensures that information is easily readable in various lighting conditions.Overall, the Garmin Instinct 2 base model has won me over with its exceptional battery life and reliable heart rate tracking. It's the perfect companion for those who value long-lasting performance and accurate fitness monitoring. The Instinct 2's robust features, durability, and user-friendly interface make it a top choice for anyone seeking a reliable and versatile smartwatch. I wholeheartedly recommend it to fellow fitness enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers.
I had ordered the Garmin Instinct 2 Solar from Best Buy as I had been experiencing some rapid battery rundown on my Garmin Instinct Solar first generation.By the time I got the new watch, I had done some settlings tweaks, including eliminating the pulse ox monitoring at night.I was hoping I could set up the new device as primarily and the first generation one as a backup or for use when doing dirty tasks such as yard work. By that time there may be more of the newer version in stock at the stores, especially if there is a third generation version by then. I saw that Best Buy had the first generation at good markdown sale.Overall, I like the Garmin experience in terms of what all the device tracks. It is far better than any Fitbit I have used. Also, although I like iPhone and iPad, I don’t think I would like the Apple Watch. I’m not into using watch as an extension of the phone. I do not use any phone messages, and would not want to answer the phone via my watchI do wish your settings could be revised for lap swimmers to allow a pool lap size compatible with a backyard pool. I can’t track lap swimming in our 28’ pool. My old Fitbit Charge 4 can do that.

And despite being silicone, it very expensive to buy a replacement due to brand.UK is not that good for solar powered watch (but yes, it does work if exposed to sunlight and such). When you reive notification (like phone text or app), due to vibration and light turned on, the battery drains very fast. Let's say someone constantly text you as you do a workout, next moment a whole day was drained (and yes, bigness, gps and more off/lowest stetting)On this topic, using different "watch faces" or some sleep setting, will drain the battery even faster.
Despite what it says on the watch, it works perfectly well with sports other than surfing. It's just a regular Instinct 2, but with more colorful design, and slightly customised settings (that you can change). It's great as a fitness/health tracker, sleep tracking works very well, tracking sports also. Calculates useful training effect data, recovery time, can predict your training performance, etc.Extremely customizable. Supports an overwhelming amount of sports & activities. And you can add more on top of that!GPS works well for tracking, but navigation is bad. It is possible to load a course into the watch, so you can follow "breadcrumbs", but the compass is rather bad, and GPS is not always accurate enough (in default GPS+Glonass settings - there are more ... It is possible to load a course into the watch, so you can follow "breadcrumbs", but the compass is rather bad, and GPS is not always accurate enough (in default GPS+Glonass settings - there are more power-consuming & more accurate GPS modes).Supports who-know-how-many extra sport devices, though Bluetooth or AMP+.The battery life is underwhelming - the watch calculates its battery life for 20+ days, but each training drains a few days out of it. Have to charge it at least once per week.Solar panel is underwhelming. You'd have to spend really long time outdoors to really benefit from it. For most people, it's rather a gimmick. For more hardcore users, there are better watches.Garmin Connect app is good. Shows you extra stats, lets you configure your watch, connect with friends, plan exercise & courses.
This is a great smart watch. I like that it doesn't have to be tight to the wrist to measure all the health data. I haven't worn any jewelry in decades so this is a change for me. The only complaint that I can make about it is that the documentation for the features and how to access them is not accurate. Reaching some of the relevant menu items does not work as easily in real time use as it does in the manual description. When looking for a specific feature in the manual you must make sure you are using the manual for the exact smart watch that you bought since the menus may be different for solar/non-solar watches in the same family. The watch is light. The band is adjustable in 1/4" increments so it should fit anyone in the size range. The display is excellent ... MoreThis is a great smart watch. The band is adjustable in 1/4" increments so it should fit anyone in the size range. The display is excellent and all information can be customized so you can make it display those things that are important to you to know.I have had this for more than a month and have used it for various activities in the activity list and so far it has been useful tracking metrics for me. I use the Connect app from the Apple store and everything syncs perfectly and is easy to reference. The only issues I have found are related to coming up to speed with usage of the watch so it is all on me if I hit the wrong button while I learned how not to set up an activity.Battery life is great. I use it to track health metrics and get more than three days out of it before I pop it onto the charger. The cable could be longer and that would be great but it works so it is good enough. GPS use while doing an activity will decrease battery life quite a bit. there are multiple power management settings though so you can find one that works for your situation.Great watch! I would buy this for a friend or family member or I would consider other Garmin watches as gifts. Within their product line there should be a watch for just about anyone.
