A quick background here. I've never listened to any of the really high-end headphones. Over the years I've had a Grado SR80 and SR125, Sennheiser Momentum and HD600, Denon D2000, Audio-Technica MSR7, Beyer 770, and a half-dozen more that I don't remember. I would have given them 5 stars if they had a touch more oomph in the bass. The bass boost button on the Zen DAC works a treat. Or a gentle nudge on your EQ of choice will do the trick. For Windows I recommend FxSound.Two things to be aware of: these NEED an amp. My daughter tried them on her iPhone and literally heard nothing. And secondly, they leak a LOT of sound.To sum up, I'm very glad I bought these 'phones. They are comfortable for long listening sessions, and the sound is detailed and exciting without being harsh or fatiguing. A little lean in the bass though, but not disastrously so. I'm looking forward to trying out some of the more expensive planar-magnetics in due course.

So where exactly does the 400se place itself?Well remember, we're comfortably under $200 whilst the Sundara sits around just above $300, and these take EQ like a champ. EQing a simple low shelf and high shelf to taste and you've got yourself a pretty nice sounding set on the cheap. They do like power. They will need power. But the cost of admission is fair, I run mine using a K7 ($200) using the balanced 4.4mm connection and that provides enough juice for these to sound at their best while also being able to take pre-amp adjustments to avoid clipping on the EQ side.So for the combined price of just over $309 (400se & K7), you have yourself a fine entry piece of gear that will land you just under the price of a Sundara alone, ($329 as of this writing).So all in all, is it a baby Sundara? Well, not quite. But if you are getting these, skip out on the Sundara and look at the Ananda as your next purchase. That will have you even more impressed and them some. Ok, wrapping this up.Hifiman HE-400se is:-Bright warmish tuning, very lean bass, mids slightly recessed, with a warmer lower treble but zingy upper treble that is prone to sibilance.-Excellent soundstage providing a convincing experience-Imaging well enough to place individual instruments in the stage, but nothing special here. Until you remember these are $109.-Again, the price. $109. Seriously, this is an outstanding value.That places it firmly in the 4 stars, "good" ranking for me. These make a fine entry to the world of planars or headphones in general I should say, even more-so for those willing to EQ. The only thing I would suggest is picking up an aftermarket cable. A dual 3.5mm to whichever termination of your choosing will suffice.Thanks for reading all this.

The comfort is excellent and the build quality is adequate too for the price. The sound signature is neutral with a bit of less bass (Nothing that my Zen Dac's True bass button can't fix) but the technicalities and imaging are stellar for the price. All in all, a great ... I had this problem with my ATH headphones even in winter.The pads are huge & very comfortable.Skull size is larger than average & I dont feel like these are clamped too hard for me.Maybe smaller people will feel it to be a bit loose.If you are short on budget (like me) then you cant go wrong with these headphones esp. when coming from closed back headphones like ATH-M40x , just be sure to pair it with a good amp/dac to get the most out of it, but even without those you will hear a lot of difference (in a good way).Hope this was helpful i was quite anxious before i bought these cans but i am quite satisfied now.
I have a behringer q302usb, soundcraft mtk12, and an apollo solo at my disposal. No luck with either, you can sense the potential but the bass will be lacking over the crisp separated highs. I tried to drive them with a mini3 with my ipod video and iphone 5s and it did a fairly good job, but you can still sense the lack of bass.Baffled by the scenario, I almost thought if i made a wrong decision since quite a few reviews talk about the lack of bass (the sound stage part is true though, noticeably narrow) but then I saw my LG G6 lying around and decided to give it one more go.I did not expect this phone to be a contender in the scene but oh my god does it do a marvelous job with these headphones.
