One of our four cats has struggled with urinary issues (crystals). We tried feeding mine the prescription urinary and hers their diet, but mine would eat theirs, and had symptoms recur. When we tried to just do the prescription, one of her cats stopped eating. Anyway, we switched to the Hill’s Multicare Urinary, and all four eat it and we haven’t had any problems for two years. In addition, we split a can of wet food for everyone each morning, alternating with the over the counter Hill’s Urinary and Tiki Cat to give them more variety.

I have used this food for several years for an adult cat and her daughter who had urinary issues in the past. I noticed recently that the prescription and regular Hill's foods looked old and crumbly. I thought they were expired or I had received a bad bag but all of the Hill's dry foods I use were the same no matter where I bought them. When I put the food on a paper plate there was what looked like grease or oil all over the plate where the food had been placed. After researching this, it seems fish oil was added to this food, and to the nonprescription brands. The younger cat who ate this food and another cat who ate a regular Hill's dry food brand developed acid reflux from the fish oil in the dry foods. The younger cat who ate this food and another cat who ate a regular Hill's dry food brand developed acid reflux from the fish oil in the dry foods. We have had to visit the vet multiple times because of this and both cats are now taking sucralfate. Two other cats have had hair loss and skin issues which could be linked to this food as well. I have read multiple reports of people saying their cats lost their hair while on Hill's foods and the issues resolved when the Hill's was discontinued. If you research fish oil side effects, you will see how having too much of it can cause acid reflux, high blood sugar, and itchy skin, among other things. I have spent a fortune buying this food for my cats because this was recommended to me by my vet, and I admit it did help them for the most part although the mother cat still got a UTI that had to be treated on this food, but they have now started rejecting the food due to the oil which makes the food look like it is rancid. And, like others have said, Hill's keep raising their prices with the economy like it is. I would suggest using a canned urinary food or moving to a 100% wet food diet which is what I am going to do now. I realize now that dry food is the worst thing you can give a cat who has had urinary issues or any cat really, wet food is needed to flush out their bladders, and Hill's has caused multiple issues we never had before using Hill's food: repeated blocked gland issues amongst multiple cats, dandruff in multiple cats, frequent vomiting and hairballs, and now acid reflux. I will NEVER buy Hill's products again.

Einstein was diagnosed with bladder stones in January 2023 and the vet gave us options for this brand or Royal Canin. He weighed 18lbs at the time.Within 2 weeks, getting a new X-ray - all stones were gone! We continued to keep him on the food for several months.I’d say mid year we noticed he was down to 14lbs. He’d had been throwing up here and there. He is a very long haired cat, so hairballs weren’t abnormal. But we started to notice there was more food than hairball being thrown up.We took him to the vet and we discussed his weight loss. Einstein was now in the average healthy weight range for a cat at this point. But the rate of speed he lost was quick. We monitored the weight loss for a few months later.I noticed a few times within a 7+ month span he had “flare ups” like UTI symptoms, which he had that when he first had stones. These flare ups - consisting of him crying meowing, constant licking down there, frequent use of the box, and little pee produced - would only last 1 day then he was back to normal. Didn’t think anything of it really since it only lasted 1 day and this happened maybe 3 times in that amount of time. But the throwing up started to slowly become all food, and no hairball.I weight him and he’s 13.5lbs. Him and his brother are grazers, always a full bowl down to eat. Einstein’s brother, Newton, never a single issue with this urinary care food. He loved it and never showed bad symptoms.Talked to the vet and we switched him over to the Hills sensitive stomach/skin formulae and the throwing up completely stopped. No food at all, just hair balls. A miracle. But about 2 weeks ago (in November 2023) he started with the flare up symptoms again. But this time it went on for days. I was giving him sensitive food and urinary care wet food. He could tolerate the wet food and he never had issues with the wet formula. He had constant meow crying all day, frequent box use, isolating himself in a room meowing, finding him hiding in the shower and this is very abnormal for him which was my red flag for seeing the vet. We didn’t do X-rays this time, we got Gabapentin and vet gave him a fluid shot. This didn’t do anything. He only became worse and the issues didn’t subside. So we make another vet appt in the same week. New X-rays showed small stones formed again - confirming everything he was exhibiting was because of the stones. She wanted us to switch back from sensitive stomach food to the urinary care food, weighing pros and cons, he wasn’t throwing up often with the urinary food but it helped his stones very quick! The food WORKS.We saw the vet Friday - started the urinary food that evening and by Monday, Einstein threw up 5 times. All food. Liquid, whole pellets, some mushed. Had the poops. He was going threw it let me tell you. I immediately stopped giving him the urinary food. I went back to sensitive dry food and this entire year I’ve given them Hills urinary care wet food, Einstein never had issues with the wet food oddly. My boy is just sensitive altogether.Without a doubt this food works on dissolving stones, incredible it dissolved probably 40-50+ stones in 2 weeks. I’m sad to have to change his food AGAIN. We have ordered Royal Canin’s urinary brand to see if he can tolerate it.Yes - I’d recommend this because it truly works BUT please watch your cats weight and if they are throwing up more food than hairball.

Our cat was an abandoned cat. We were able to coax her to come to our home for food. As time went by, we were able during the winter to get her to come inside instead of staying in our cold garage. When spring came, we already knew she was going to be out cat in her Forever Home. I made an appointment with the veterinarian that we use to take our pets to. She was susceptible to UT's and we know hadbeen under a very stressful situation before coming to us. Rescued late as a kitten, hyper and best mouser of all time. BUT all his crazy energy as a kitten turned to hyper anxiety. Has a hard time using litterbox, too playful to hydrate enough, ended up with a batch of crystals. The C/D food cleared him and no further episodes in over two years. I try and push the wet food C/D just for the moisture, but he loves kibble. The Tryptophan is so noticeable, he is more mellow now, still gets crazy playful but he can lie around a little more. When I have needed to feed the regular c/d (supply issues) kibble, he can't handle it, the anxiety returns and he isn't accustomed to dealing with high anymore. He will need the Stress formula probably for the rest of his life.I wish the formula didn't have corn, but he's from farm cat ... MoreRescued late as a kitten, hyper and best mouser of all time. The food science in this is what has helped him keep a clear bladder and make nice big pee spots.
This was a godsend! My cat, Truly, started experiencing health issues back in September 2023. Her playful, vocal, 4 year old self turned into hiding and barely peeping. That’s when I found urine in her blood. I assumed it was a UTI but when I took her to the vet they found stones in her kidneys. I had two options: surgery or antibiotics and this prescription food. Obviously surgery was a last resort but would do it if needed! Within the first 24 hours of giving Truly Hill’s Prescription Diet she immediately showed signs of recovery! Her urine returned to normal and so did her mood and fun, loving self. I am so thankful that the vet prescribed this because it has been a game changer! Moreover, Truly ate it right away. If this situation sounds similar to you and your cat, I’d strongly recommend talking to your vet about this food!
I never ever write reviews. But today I feel compelled to. My female cat, Vex, had a bladder stone (calcium oxalate) removed 5 years ago and was prescribed the Science Diet Urinary Care c/d (chicken) Rx to try to prevent future stones. She has been on this for the past 5 years and loved it and has not had any stones (that we know of). Our other female cat, Annie, ate the food too. She has never gotten sick or vomited over the 10 years we had her. However, when the new design bag came, the food made her sick. We did not notice the design on the bag was "new." We didn't even know the formula had changed as the "new" look on the bag was subtle and had no actual wording that something was new. We didn't even know the formula had changed as the "new" look on the bag was subtle and had no actual wording that something was new. We ended up researching about the food to see if that was causing Annie's sickness and that is how we found out about the subtle changes. But Vex seemed to be eating it and was not getting sick. So we kept putting the food out. 2 weeks later, Annie was so sick that she stopped eating and drinking. We took her to the Vet and had to put her down (kidney disease too far gone). We were skeptical of the new formula food. BUT-the next bag that came from Chewy was the old look and the old formula. So we fed it to Vex and she did fine. But 2 days ago, we opened up the next bag of food, which was back to the newer stuff. Within hours, Vex was yowling in pain and vomiting multiple times until she only had water/foam coming out. She would not eat/drink and was very weak and lethargic - the same things we saw in Annie. We were so worried we would lose another cat within 2 months. We are so lucky that this morning, Vex started doing better. But we will not feed her the new Science Diet Urinary c/d dry food. We are worried to feed her non-Rx kibble as this will likely increase her risk for forming stones again. We do feed her wet food as well. I will be contacting the vet to get a Rx for the competitor brand. I am not one to bash a brand. That is not my intention. I am trying to get our story out there to try to possibly save other cats. If you notice your cat having these symptoms, I would stop the food. Maybe there are more stories out there like mine that need to be brought to light and let the Hill's Science Diet company know about. My other issue is that the "new" formula announcement was not written plain and clear on the front of the bag. So when they talk about transitioning your cat from the old food to the new...we didn't have any old food left. We did not know there had been a change until our first cat got sick and we started looking it up online.
Oliver our orange cat, had a urinary tract blockage that required surgery, we almost lost him.. luckily my son who noticed he had swelled up almost double his size, we proceeded to emergency vet.. anyways a few days later upon returning home, the vet sent us home with this food. I thought he would never eat it, but he loves it. Two years later, unfortunately for me because it is pricey, but worth it, he loves and we have never had a replapse! He eats it without anything else on it, and we add wet food in addition in the morning. I wish the food was made available to everyone... without a prescription because it is so good and works wonders! If you have your cat on this, you know what I am saying@! Thanks Hill's. My son is so grateful to have his orange cat Oliver with him now in College (YAY). It's a great food, thanks Chewy for the monthly shipments to his college address - it is seamless, on time and they are very healthy and happy!
I can’t personally vouch for the taste—unless you count that one time I mistook it for a late-night snack (we don’t talk about that)—but my cat seems to love it. The little furball, who I suspect is plotting world domination, has some serious stress issues. If he doesn’t get this exact brand of cat food, he turns into a furry sprinkler system and blesses my house with the delightful aroma of cat pee.I’m not sure what he’s stressed about, though. The guy lives in the lap of luxury, complete with his own cat palace, while I’m out here considering ramen a delicacy in this cost of living crisis. Honestly, I think he’s eating better than I am. But hey, it’s either shell out for this gourmet cat cuisine or resign myself to living in a pee-scented wonderland.Oh, and ... MoreI can’t personally vouch for the taste—unless you count that one time I mistook it for a late-night snack (we don’t talk about that)—but my cat seems to love it. He’ll attack anything that moves—possibly including my dignity. When we first met, nobody mentioned that this cat came with more baggage than I did, but it’s too late to back out now. So, all things considered, I’d say this cat food is a solid investment. Highly recommend—especially if you value a pee-free home!
Top ingredients: "Chicken, Whole Grain Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Whole Grain Wheat, Brewers Rice." I'm too tired today to tell y'all why an obligate carnivore like a cat has their body put under stress by eating grains (especially corn). I recommend going on a bit of a google search odyssey. One big problem with this for my cat is that she would regularly puke immediately after eating it (snarf 'n barf), even if she wasn't fed a large amount. I was suspecting that all the grains were swelling with moisture in her stomach and then immediately triggering a vomit reflex? Additionally, if we left her with enough food for her to graze on through the day, she would just eat nonstop until she threw up. I was suspecting that all the grains were swelling with moisture in her stomach and then immediately triggering a vomit reflex? Additionally, if we left her with enough food for her to graze on through the day, she would just eat nonstop until she threw up. We had to move to feeding her hand-counted 20 kibbles at a time, many times throughout the day in order to get enough food into her, kind of defeating the purpose of dry food. After switching to Dr Elsey's Cleanprotein dry cat food, I can leave her with food to graze on, and it apparently is satiating enough that she will stop eating when she is full. That dry food is made with zero grains and only uses gelatin (animal protein) as a binder. I imagine eating the mostly-grain kibble was like eating cookies for every meal (since cats aren't designed to process carbs like we are). That would leave you hungrier and hungrier and you'd eat more and more. Not good for weight management, not at all helpful in preventing chronic vomiting. On top of that, if your cat has urinary issues, the MOST IMPORTANT THING is feeding them wet food. Cat's are designed to get their water/moisture needs filled from eating fresh kills. It's been shown in studies that cats that are fed wet diets get more hydration overall (I recommend fact-checking with a google search, don't just take my word for all this). Hydration is a massive component of preventing struvite crystals. Here is a website written by a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM): catinfo(.)org(/)feline-urinary-tract-diseases(/) (remove parentheses for link to work) . If your vet has prescribed this food to help your cat dissolve a current crystal problem, I will not tell you to go against vet's orders. As far as I understand about prescription foods for crystal problems, they are meant to be used short-term to help dissolve a current problem? In any case, when your cat is clear of crystals, the best way to prevent a recurrence is feeding wet food and avoiding grains. Avoiding grains also helps your cat avoid problems like obesity and diabetes, there is also some correlation to indicate that a grain-full diet can be a risk factor for developing cancer. So ANYWAY this dry food is not a cure-all and the high grain content is bad for the health of obligate carnivores like cats. It also may make your cat puke and overeat like it did for my kitty. Sorry about the long review, I'm too tired to write a short one lol. =P
