This bottle took a little getting used to at first since the twisting cap is unlike any water bottle that I've ever used. Overall, this is something that I learned to love though. You don't have to go through the hassle of completely removing a cap and it provides quick access to water! The water flow is great, yet the opening is small enough to prevent spillage when drinking. I love the more narrow shape of the bottle, allowing it to fit within my cup holder and the mesh side pocket in my backpack. The design is really sleek and the functionality has been great. I greatly appreciate how lightweight it is. My only issue has been with forgetting to turn the lid back into the closed position, which allows water to leak out. The RECON HydraPak water bottle is a very simple and easy to use bottle. Like most bottles, it is clear, made of plastic, and holds a standard amount of water. However, according to HydraPak, this specific line of bottles are "Made from 50% post-consumer recycled plastic", which I thoroughly enjoy due to its environmental-friendly effects. Additionally, the area that shows the volume of water is indented inwards to aid with grip when holding the bottle. As for the top, the rubber handle is useful when carrying the bottle and seems durable. The way to open the cap in order to drink is very unique -- its mechanism is the same as any other screw cap bottle however the cap never actually comes off. When you twist the cap 180 degrees, it unlocks and allows you to drink. To close, just twist 180 degrees back. It's easy to use and less of a hassle than traditional bottles where you have to completely screw the cap off and put it back on afterwards. There are also little hash marks that signify where the 180 degree mark is so you are aware whether it is open or not. Cleaning is easy as well. The cap has a silicone filter/lining that easily comes off in one part. Cleaning the body of the bottle is pretty self-explanatory.The only con that I have noticed while using this item is potential leaking while drinking. On the opposite side of the drinking hole, there is a tiny hole that I assume is there to avoid condensation inside the bottle. If you tilt the bottle far enough, little droplets stuck to the silicone lining can drip out of that hole, however, water will not actively spill out of it (just accumulated water droplets on the silicone). Although this bottle was probably not designed to maintain the liquids inside to a specific temperature (such as a flask or thermos), just keep that in mind if you are looking for that characteristic because this bottle does not have any special properties like that.Other than that, the HydraPak bottle is pretty durable and simple, not to mention environmentally friendly and a good option if you are in need of an easy to use, standard water bottle.

I like the simplicity, capacity, and weight of the Recon. For a 1L bottle, it weighs next to nothing, and the design is super simple. So I was really bummed when it broke on my first hike. I dropped the bottle and the cap cracked.I went to the Hydrapak website to look for a replacement and they don't offer them. I wrote to Hydrapak customer service and they never responded. That was a month ago.Bummer. I liked the design. Now it's held together with tape but it leaks when I try drinking.

I bought one of these (750 mL, purple cap) six months ago for car/air trips. While I love my insulated stainless bottle at work, I wanted something for travel that was lightweight, easy to clean, would not leak on planes (hello cabin pressure) and that the family could *somewhat* hygienically share because apparently I’m the only person who consistently remembers their water bottle. This bottle has performed admirably on all fronts. It really is as easy to clean as the videos demonstrate, and it has held up great. After the most recent trip, my husband finally relented from his “I already have a water bottle” stance and upgraded to one of these. We also purchased a 500 mL for the kids to use under supervision. After the most recent trip, my husband finally relented from his “I already have a water bottle” stance and upgraded to one of these. We also purchased a 500 mL for the kids to use under supervision. And that’s the only negative to be aware of - The twist mechanism for drinking is very easy to use and quick to get the hand of, but for kids under 10ish they won’t always remember to twist it close. For adults, no problem. I also would prefer a slightly different handle mechanism as this one is a bit stiff and wider than the bottle, but on the other hand, we’ve been very rough with ours and it hasn’t broken or caused any problems. This is a real winner of a bottle and I’m so happy to have found it.
I waffled a bit between three and four stars here. What got the extra star is the actual drinking experience. Between the shape of the lid and the design of the hole, there is unrestricted flow but no extra slosh or spill. It basically combines the drinking feel of a cup with the ease of use of a straw bottle.Unfortunately, the rest of the lid experience needs a bit of a rethink. To open to the drinking position, you unscrew the lid from full closed one-half rotation. There's a small marking on the lid and handle which assist in this, but if you have the white-on-white coloring or if something had happened to your handle there is no other feedback. A click or some form of stop would be really useful here for alignment. Also, since aside from the marking it's not ... MoreI waffled a bit between three and four stars here. A click or some form of stop would be really useful here for alignment. Also, since aside from the marking it's not readily apparent if the lid is open or closed I had more than one spill from picking up or knocking over a bottle which wasn't actually closed. Self discipline is vital. The handle is adequate for throwing in a bag side pocket for hiking or pulling out of a bottle holder on a bike, but not super comfortable for running with (I preferred just holding the bottle for that activity). Still, a lot of bottles don't have one and it seems reasonably durable. I do question long term use since, as noted above, you need the handle to know if the bottle is closed.Materials seem pretty durable and when new the clear plastic is very clear, could be mistaken for glass. I'm sure with use that will eventually change but it's looking good after a month. I was hoping for a bit better than 50% recycled materials but it's a start. I've gotten used to a double-walled metal bottle so my water got warm quicker than I was used to - not really an issue if you're expecting it though. Comes apart easily for cleaning.Overall, well made, and a good drinking experience. I hope they consider improving the lid closure system to make this perfect. I'd probably jump on a double-walled version if one became available.
Besides the unique cap design, this bottle also has a somewhat unique form factor. It is primarily the form factor that I was after.I needed a bottle that was the correct diameter to fit securely in the bottle pocket of my pack. I also needed it to be the correct height so that it sticks up high enough to be easy to grab but not so high as to fall out or catch on rocks or branches and be pulled out. This is the first plastic bottle that exactly fits. Others that hold a similar volume are either too skinny and fall out easily or they are short and squat and too hard to pull out.The handle also helps with pulling the bottle out of a pocket, and it doesn’t get in the way when drinking.Initially I was wary of the cap design, but it works well and, if desired, can be ... MoreBesides the unique cap design, this bottle also has a somewhat unique form factor. The RECON HydraPak bottle is a perfect diameter (2 7/8 inches) for fitting into the side pockets of backpacks and car cup holders. Because it is composed of a clear, virtually indestructible plastic with markings indicating the amount of liquid within, the user can easily ascertain the amount of fluid in the bottle, and the bottle can withstand substantialabuse. It's flexible handle is comfortable for carrying and facilitates removal of the bottle from the side pocket of a pack by reaching back for the bottle, without removing the pack. The capacity is 750 ml (25 fl oz), which I find useful. To drink from the bottle, the cap is twisted 180 degrees, which means the cap stays attached -- helpful for not losing the cap and useful for not delivering too much fluid when moving/driving. Furthermore, the lip of the cap is very comfortable for drinking. In order to gulp from the bottle, the entire cap needs to be removed -- a bit inconvenient for gulpers. Added pluses are that the bottle and its parts are easy to clean and dishwasher-safe, and that the bottle is made of 50% recycled plastic.Lastly, it should be mentioned (as several hiking friends have spontaneously stated), the bottle is good-looking. (I have used this bottle on four 10-12-mile day hikes and multiple times in my car.)
I bought one of these when they launched. Loved it. So easy to chug waterfalls of water. Ordered 4 more, now I have 5. 5 super chugable water bottles that leak water all the time if not left upright. Set it on the seat of a car, wet seat. Take it on a plane in your backpack, soak everyones bags in the overhead. Leave it in the trunk of the car, soaked trunk. Customer service says they don't leak and there is nothing they can do. Some kind of scam I'm pulling, buy 5 water bottles and request an exchange for a product that doesn't leak every time I let the bottle sit for a while. AVOID THIS PRODUCT! If you do want this product, I've got 5 used one's that "don't leak" I'll give you.
This bottle feels light, and looks pretty sleek. I like the lid design, and wish I could order an extra lid to put on a Clip & Carry Recon bottle as I'd now rather have two twist-tops for daily use at home or work. If I were expecting a rainy or dusty hike I would prefer the Clip & Carry. I think I drink more water when this bottle is within reach - it's an appealing design.
This is supposed to be the smartwater bottle killer and I would agree. It is well made and is light-ish. It has an easy to use twist cap that is wide mouth, so it won’t fit a standard filter size cap. There is a plastic gasket that is removable so it can be cleaned and provides a leak proof seal. This gasket does feel a little flimsy so we’ll see how long it lasts. I like that there is no weird plastic taste. The downside is that it weighs more than a smartwater bottle but then again, I can put up with a few more grams for mother earth. The 1L weighs 189g, an extra 150g which won’t feel like much in the grand scheme of things unless you’re gram obsessed.
