Unlike other pestle and mortars, this stylish design includes a reversible bamboo lid with several functions. Firstly, it helps keep the mortar clean and dust free when stored on a worktop or shelf and features a deep groove on the top to safely hold the pestle when not in use. When removed, the lid can also be turned over and used to place ingredients ready for preparation or even as a small chopping surface. I waited for this to be in the sale as it is a tad expensive but like all JJ items they are quality. It seems to grind well and I like that the bamboo lid serves as a cover. Ingenious to have pestle in the lid.

I waited for this to be in the sale as it is a tad expensive but like all JJ items they are quality. It seems to grind well and I like that the bamboo lid serves as a cover. Ingenious to have pestle in the lid.
An attractive piece that sits on our kitchen bench when not in use and highly effective when in use- very stable and easy to smash or grind our ingredients.
It was a gift, and they said, "on the counter, it looks like a Bluetooth speaker, but it's probably the oldest tech in the world. Ultra cool!"
Overall a really nice Pestle and Mortar. Heavy, all stone is granite so I know it will last well. Lid function is great to keep dust out and to store Pestle. Only dropped down from 5 as would have liked lid to fit a little more snug.
Nice looking and great idea with the lid, disappointed with all the palaver you have to do before using it with the cleaning process, not what i want to do after spending ÂŁ45 and my bowl has what looks like a few grinding blemishes, I'm presuming from the manufacturing/shaping of the bowl.

As soon as I saw this, I knew I’d found “the one.” It looks great on the counter w/o being a dust catcher because of the bamboo cover w/inset for the pestle. Such a smart and practical design! SEASONING PROCESS I seasoned it with white rice after washing it with water. The rice was clean (no granite pieces or granite dust) after the 1st try but just to be safe I repeated the process with white rice and peppercorns. Once it was ground up I ground up cooked white rice (instead of garlic) because I’ll be using it for “sweet” spices as opposed to savory. Lovely design, compact but practical. Looks amazing on the kitchen surface as well as being a useful product and certainly not design over substance. Having a lid on this product I think works well and differentiates it from other types of this product I have seen or owned before. Joseph Joseph as a brand I have always rated and find their products designed to a high standard but always functional, this product is no exception and I would therefore recommend it.
Beautifully crafted, amazingly tactile, aesthetically pleasing and the best pestle and mortar I've come across. It was just what I was looking for. The shape and feel of the pestle is really lovely and it makes a really satisfying noise when you are grinding. The bamboo lid is a game changer for keeping herbs/spices covered and a place for the pestle to go on top. It's perfect, I love it!
