I also ordered the Venus Laowa front element UV protector filter as Venus promised it would not vignette. Construction seems fine.

Amazing Lens

This lens is amazing, the autofocus is fast and works well with Sony, the f2.8 is amazing for dark scenes, and the sun-flare is reduced and is not distorted. You can also put filters on the lens which is very useful. I just wish we had color options, imagine how amazing this lens will look in white.

To have found a sharp, lightweight, 10mm ultra wide which also takes a drop in filter system is exactly what I've needed for such a long time. Plenty of wonderful 10s, 12s, 14s out there but not that take a drop in filter system in front. Finally I can use an ultra wide down by the ocean without worrying about the front element being covered in salt spray every few seconds.

After briefly studying this lens at The Photography Show, I knew I would buy one but they were in very short supply. Carmarthen were the first to have stock without pre-order. I am not disapppointed, and it's much better than the 10mm Cosina-made Voigtlander I have used since 2016 - AF, and much faster, and absolutely no optical penalty in fact better CA control (or maybe better built-in/Adobe lens profile). Tiny bit less wide, maybe it's 10.2mm and the V is 10.1mm... all these things are allowed a degree of tolerance in description, Leica 50mms were actually 51.6mm for decades. Why 10mm? Well, in professional work it may not be ideal for interiors without some cropping, but square crops (40MP on Sony 61MP sensor) look great without visible exaggeration of space. ... MoreAfter briefly studying this lens at The Photography Show, I knew I would buy one but they were in very short supply. Well, in professional work it may not be ideal for interiors without some cropping, but square crops (40MP on Sony 61MP sensor) look great without visible exaggeration of space. And there's one thing 10mm does which 12mm or 14mm or 17mm does not. It gets in big sky. You can't 'zoom with your feet' to get more sky in! But 10mm gets you 130° of sky and it's the only way apart from multishot stitching to get there. Even with filters on this lens, 77mm thread and can use a 100mm W/A filter system holder - just. But I prefer to work without using filter systems as Adobe's latest software, and the recovery potential of ISO 100 shots exposed for the bright sky, make them redundant.

No Distortion - Not Really True
4 August 2024

First of all, I had to wait nearly five months to finally receive this lens two days ago. The lens is well constructed with quality materials. I was impressed that it appeared to be the equal of Nikkor in build quality and sharpness. The auto focus works well and frankly I was a bit surprised that the lens is so sharp. On the downside, there is noticeable vignetting with this lens. I already had a Nikkor 10mm super wide angle lens for mirrored cameras that I liked but did have noticeable distortion. So when this Laowa lens hit the market being advertised as a rectilinear lens with no distortion, I jumped at the chance to get this lens for my Z8. I haven’t been able to really put this lens through its paces but from the few images I have taken, there clearly is distortion that appears in most unusual ways, similar to my Nikkor 10mm. I was also amazed at how close the lens is able to get to the subject and produce sharp images (3-4 inches). Overall I heartily recommend this lens as a worthy compliment to super wide angle Nikon photography but don’t be fooled into thinking that this lens is distortion free, nothing could be further from the truth. I have included one image to illustrate the incredible sharpness and color fidelity.

One of the Best!

This lens quickly became one of my favorites after using it on a shoot for Royal Caribbean. In fact it was so good I had to make a video on it. https://youtu.be/2feaBlYWSSw?si=G3_xBxG0KVKZ0qRnThis lens is perfect for vlog style shots, tracking shots in tight spaces and with minimal distortion it is usable in a variety of situations.

Professional grade ultra-wide
26 June 2024

I bought an early copy of this lens at a slightly inflated price directly from China for a specific need on a job that will occur before this lens is released in the US. I have done some real world, non-scientific testing at various apertures on a tripod. I also tested other available “ultra-wide” lenses (all are MF, not AF like this one), and this lens is in a class all its own. It is much sharper than anything else I tested with little to no distortion. Solid build quality. Threaded front. I get no corner cut-off from a 77mm Nikon Polarizer II filter mounted on it. The lens shade is removable unlike some reviews claim. Yes, its exterior is slightly blue, not that there’s anything wrong with that. The lens cap is not easy to grasp with fingertips when the lens shade is mounted, but works well without the lens shade. That small detail needs to be re-designed. This is the only non-Nikkor Z lens that I own, and it goes where my 14-24mm can’t tread. There is some loss of sharpness at the extreme edges at any aperture, but it is acceptably sharp and the vignetting is not bad. It’s a professional grade ultra-wide AF lens. That’s my opinion. Hope this is helpful.

WIDE and SHARP!
19 May 2024

I bought the 5 blade version and it is awesome! WIDE and CLOSE focusing. I can rest the VERY small lens shade on a surface and photograph everything from 1/4 inch away to infinity. I HAVE to get close to anything smaller than a building to get it any reasonable size in the frame.ONLY drawback is NO electronics. If/when Canon releases interface specs, I will buy THAT version too!Fun lens and still learning!

Way More Than I Expected

I have had this lens for literally six hours and am totally taken by its build and photo quality. I have taken a couple dozen photos with my Z8 so far and if there was ever an ultra-wide best suited for the Z8 its this one. The build quality in my opinion rivals some high-end lenses I own. The focus ring is so smooth it feels like it's floating. The auto/manual switch is very solid with a decisive click. This is an all-metal lens and the machining is outstanding. I have been a quality engineer for many years, and I recognize a solid well-built quality product when I see it. If this is a true representation of Laowa's quality, I'm hooked. Regarding picture quality, I have to say the overall picture is amazingly crisp and clear. There will be some who talk about slight blurring on the edges. What would you expect from a lens with 135-degree field of view. You're going to have some rough edges every now and then. Luckily, we have photo software that can help us to adjust those conditions. In my opinion I don't feel that issue is a showstopper for this lens what-so-ever. The other great photo feature is its autofocus capability. This lens focuses in a snap. Literally. I'm sure you can tell I'm in love with this lens and a new fan of the folks at Laowa. That said, this will not be my last Laowa lens purchase.

unique lens, great fun
3 September 2024

This lens is unique in that it combines ultra-wide angle of view with bright aperture and very short close focusing distance. Consequently it can produce rather unusual super-wide almost-macro images. Autofocus in general is not very important for a 10mm lens, but for these extreme close-ups it actually comes out handy and it works well. Strange that the back cover does not fit other lenses, it was annoying when first changing lenses, but since I discovered that the standard cover fits Laowa without a problem, I just put the supplied Laowa cover aside and use other covers.
