I chose this over the First Order Star Destroyer set, as I thought this would be a lot easier to display, and a lot more enjoyable (due to me being a HUGE fan of BB-8), and it was a heck of a lot cheaper as well! Ever since I saw it in the Holiday catalog I was hooked.Overall, it was very enjoyable to build. (I listened to a TV show while I built it). It was somewhat challenging due to the amount of small pieces, but was very enjoyable, so enjoyable in fact, I finished it in one night! (Stayed up till 1:30 am. RIP sleep schedule!).It was amazing to see this build come to life. The rubber band and the un-secure gear system really makes it some to life. With the gear system not being locked in place, it allows for the head to wobble around, and for it to move back ... MoreI chose this over the First Order Star Destroyer set, as I thought this would be a lot easier to display, and a lot more enjoyable (due to me being a HUGE fan of BB-8), and it was a heck of a lot cheaper as well! I can’t be too nit picky about it, Haha! This set is VERY hard to play with, as it does not roll or move easily. If you want to buy a Star Wars set that is easy to play with, I would recommend some of the smaller sets, or the Star Fighter sets (Like Poe’s X-Wing Fighter, TIE Silencer, and the Microfighter sets).^(Thought that might be helpful to some buyers...)^This set was an amazing experience for me and was the most fun I have had with LEGO. (This was the first set I built with atleast 1000 pieces, as when I got my R2D2, it was a bit too difficult for me because I was pretty young, so my dad built it for me).Overall, I recommend this to anyone who is a Star Wars fan and loves this little spherical robot. This was an amazing value for what you get. 1000+ piece Star Wars LEGO set that didn’t beat up the wallet, and it’s BB-8!Sorry that I had to write an entire novel to review this, but there is so much good to say about this set, and little bad. I wanted to make an in-depth review to help buyers out! This is the perfect set for someone who wants to be challenged, but not too much.

This is an amazing set and LEGO did great designing it. The build is very accurate and looks just like the character. The build is a longer build and slightly hard at some points but looks amazing. This sets contains so many cool functions and allows some playability in a set that is great for displaying. Great set for fans!

BB-8 Clever Build But Overpriced

PROS: The set looks pretty great and features some genuinely clever build techniques we don't get a lot of chances to see is production sets. The internal mechanics for the droid tools and the head are really well designed and provide a nice touch for more ambitious builders.CONS: OVERPRICED this set should have been 25% cheaper. At MSRP it is pushing $.11 per part and many of the parts are smaller than the average brick. Just not worth the price. Wait for a sale. This set is always at retailers for $70-$75. Additionally, this is not a set where the figure adds anything. Honestly, the mini-fig scale BB-8 seems out of place on the display and feels tacked on just to get figure collectors to buy the set. This is a disappointing trend for lego on the UCS sets.

The action adds a huge amount of fun to the final, assembled product. I find myself going back to swivel his head multiple times per day.The display is an added bonus, too. I think it helps him look more "official"-- certainly, it keeps him from accidentally rolling anywhere!I would recommend this for just about anyone, as long as you like the look of the set! The plates are held in with technic pins, and the spinning discs on each side are easy to reattach if they accidentally pull off. Overall, a fun build, a fun finished product, and a sturdy model!

Brilliantly Beautiful BB-8 Build

It's hard not to love this from the moment you take a look at the box and see BB-8 staring back at you.As someone who always wished they'd bought the R2-D2 set when it came out it was a no-brainer to build this little droid. The build was enjoyable, involved, occasionally tricky and a couple of times felt a little repetitive; but the 2 and a bit hours when pretty quickly and to see him take shape bag by bag was great. The external appearance hides the level of complexity and mechanics going on inside brilliantly, and the movement the mechanics create are very nicely done. The easy option would have been to have the head rotate only, however the additional effort the design team have gone to to create the authentic BB-8 head movement is well worth it and it's ... MoreIt's hard not to love this from the moment you take a look at the box and see BB-8 staring back at you.As someone who always wished they'd bought the R2-D2 set when it came out it was a no-brainer to build this little droid. The easy option would have been to have the head rotate only, however the additional effort the design team have gone to to create the authentic BB-8 head movement is well worth it and it's the first thing people comment on when they see it in action. The scale of the model is perfect for display, and the stand, info sticker and mini BB-8 make it a great shelf display piece for any collector (dusting it in the coming weeks and months won't be so much fun).In terms of playability, this isn't one the kids will be spending hours with, but then that isn't really the point with this one. It's on a slightly higher than normal shelf keeping it out of the reach of little fingers, although mini BB-8 seems to have gone missing, perhaps to a galaxy far far away!If you buy it and build it, you'll love it ..... and I challenge you to walk past it without giving the head a little wobble!

It also feels like a very strong and solid build and you don't need to worry about carrying it around. You get a smart looking display stand and a spec sheet which is a really nice addition and doesn't take too long to build (not as long as some other stands like Slave 2 or TIE Fighter), you also get a minifig of BB-8 to go on the stand.I would definitely recommend this set to any Star Wars fan as it's an awesome build, looks fantastic and has cool play features and can work as a nice display piece, (it would also look awesome if you have the UCS R2D2!)Easily 5/5 for me!!!!

This is the set you’re looking for
13 November 2017

Saw it leaked just before force Friday and I knew from the moment I saw it that I had to get it. If you or someone you know is a BB-8 enthusiast then stop reading this now and go buy it. But if you’re skeptical read on, a lot of people say the only real con for the set is it’s size, however I feel like if it was any bigger you wouldn’t want to pick it up in fear of dropping it and possibly even weight (I’m not calling this set heavy). TheLEGO designer that designed this set out did themself. The clever color coded panel building and “hollow” interior design is a true testimont to the skill these designers have. Then they gave us a treat by packing BB-8 with action features that are a nice homage to the movie and almost make BB-8 feel alive. The genuine brick detail ... MoreSaw it leaked just before force Friday and I knew from the moment I saw it that I had to get it. The genuine brick detail that went into this set cannot go without saying as it looks even better in person. The value of the set is everything I could of asked for since it seems that LEGO has inflated over the past 10 years or so in price it’s nice to get a set that even with paying for Disney and Star Wars branding, we get a set that seems right on the mark with its price tag, this should be on the list of any LEGO and Star Wars enthusiast as a must buy. I highly recommend this set and hope the same designer considers making a BB-9E set to go alongside it.

Tons of Character

Was a bit hesitant on this purchase initially but of course ended up pulling the trigger. My initial concern was the potential smaller than expected size and a monotonous build based on the shape. While BB-8 is a bit smaller than he appears on the back of the box, the final result is still stunning. Further, the build was surprising fun and challenging due to the many small white pieces. The big takeaway on this set is that it possesses a level of character not present in most sets. When you twist the side panel and the head moves he literally seems alive. The wobbly travel created by the use of the gears and rubber band create something very unique and incredibly close to the movie experience. The extending "thumbs up" torch is also a great touch although if I'm ... MoreWas a bit hesitant on this purchase initially but of course ended up pulling the trigger. The extending "thumbs up" torch is also a great touch although if I'm being super critical it would be great if the flame was a bit more vertical when extended as it is slightly angled when built.Overall, i would recommend this purchase. I am surprised it isn't a bit larger and advertised as a UCS for $25 more but for what you pay this is a really great set that has awesome display and play value.
