If you are looking for a Star Wars set that has great playability, reasonable pricing, and many exclusive minifigures, this is the one to get. The X-Wing Fighter is personally one of my all-time favorite ships in the Original Trilogy, and LEGO did not disappoint in bringing out its true beauty. This X-Wing set has four s-foil wings that can switch from attack mode into flight mode with a set of gears cleverly hidden in the main body. The wings are a bit fragile at times, but if you're careful, there'll be nothing to worry about. The main body/nose sections are quite sturdy, and offer great playabilty. The cockpit comes with a printed brick showing the Death Star battlefield, a yellow joystick, and room for one minifigure. Right above the main cockpit is R2's own cockpit that he can slide into with ease. Some problems I found was that Luke's lightsaber storage compartment rattles whenever the saber is inside it, and that can get annoying pretty quickly. And last but not least: the minifigures. Luke and Wedge, both in pilot uniform are splendid, and easily fit in the main cockpit. The set also come with the original R2-D2, Han Solo and Princess Leia (both in Hoth uniform), and a red-brown colored Chewbacca. Luke is the only minifigure with a weapon (a chrome-finished blue lightsaber), which did disappoint me, considering Han and Chewbacca could've both used a laser pistol, if you ask me.Overall, this is most likely the best Star Wars set I own. The amount of pieces is not too little, and not too much, and the build should not be difficult for lesser experienced builders. The minifigures, size, playability, and price add up to make, in my opinion, a truly original Star Wars set that will be truly hard to beat.

Although I received this set as a holiday gift several months ago, I still enjoy playing with this set, and it is truly a wonderful buy for any Star Wars OR Lego fan! After expanding my Lego Star Wars collection with the Death Star, I could not resist requesting this beauty, the classic Star Wars fighter (it does go great with the Death Star and other classic Star Wars sets). I was immediately more than satisfied with the set after I completed building, which took me maybe an hour to an hour and a half.Starting with the design of the X-Wing itself, I can think of almost no cons! First of all, although the wings may be tedious to build and attach to the ship, they are well worth it once you have completed them and can easily turn the gear to expand and contract the wings for take-off. This is a feature that is simply a genius maneuver for Lego, part of the reason why this is definitely one of my favorite Lego sets of all time (although perhaps it is a little expensive and the build is slightly long). The other features of the X-Wing build are simply phenomenal. Once you factor in the space for R2-D2, the cargo hold, and the landing gear which works incredibly well, this is an unforgettable build, and I really love how it looks two! I think this is really a must for any Star Wars fan, and if you have been collecting Legos for a while, this is the set for you.If you have managed to progress this far in my review, I have to rave about the classic minifigures. In addition to a rare Wedge Antilles minifig and a Luke Skywalker pilot minifig, this set includes R2-D2 and Chewbacca, as well as rare, Hoth-oriented versions of both Han Solo (new torso with blue coat and gear), and Princess Leia (winter jacket and insignia), and of course I love Leia's hair. With the extra minifigures, this set is almost worth the price!Overall, I cannot get over the greatness of this set, so please ignore any reviews that state otherwise. Although there are some minor cons, I highly recommend the X-Wing. Don't forget that this memorable ship destroyed the first Death Star, partly because of its innovative design!

My friend has the original $30 x-wing which came with a small rebel vehicle and Biggs Darklighter, who died in his x-wing in episode IV. What I like about this is the general size and ease of building this set. The long nose of the ship is very sleek and sturdy, the only problem being that the landing gear near the back of the nose is not necessarily stable on my ship, and breaks off easily or does not stay on the right setting, the heaviness of the ship pushing it down. The long nose of the ship is very sleek and sturdy, the only problem being that the landing gear near the back of the nose is not necessarily stable on my ship, and breaks off easily or does not stay on the right setting, the heaviness of the ship pushing it down. The back part of the ship lacks any landing gear of the sort, instead bricks are put beneath the bulk of the ship to support its weight with a more sturdy, displacing surface. There is a small compartment on the bottom of the nose which can hold Luke's lightsaber if you wish, but I prefer not to since during use of the x-wing, it bangs around and sometimes the container opens up and the lightsaber falls out. The cockpit is very nice, although I don't like how the computer screen was used from the episode IV scene of going down the long chute, since this set is basically set during the time of the escape of the rebels from Hoth in episode V. The only complex part of building this set was the technic pieces to allow the "x-foils" to go from the flat, landing and flying position to form the X of the fighting position. This is done by turning a small tab on the back of the ship, which rotates some gears, and eventually turns small tabs between the wings near the connection to the base and make the X. Unfortunately, this process is a lot slower than some of the other mechanisms Lego has come out with. Also, there are small lights on the front part of the wings, which often fall off as they are not connected well. The guns also do not always stay on well, being knocked off if they bump into anything. This set was also very cool because it helped boost my Hoth battle, since I have the rebel base, but it lacked the characters included in this set, such as Princess Leia or Han Solo. I owned a Chewbacca already, and the one included in this set seemed to be poorly made, as the top part of the wookie body seemed to be welded to the bottom part, forming a thick line. But overall this is a cool set"PS: To the Lego Company, is it possible to make a set(s) containing jar jar binks, Qui gon jin, Padme Amidala, and the Episode 1 form of Obi-wan kenobi? I missed out on the Episode 1-3 sets that included them.

My six-year old son loves LEGOs, Star Wars, and the LEGO Star Wars video game. When he wanted to spend some of his money on his first LEGO Star Wars set, we browsed through all the options available in his price range. He loves mini-figures, so we wanted a set with multiple characters. We settled on this set due to its price and features. I knew it was going to be on the upper edge of what my son could handle building. I was right. He did get it together, but not without a lot of frustration and some help. After it was together, it frustrated him by falling apart often, especially the wings. However, after a few days of high frustration, he realized if he left one set of wings off, he could build a second space ship from the set and the original ship still looked ... After it was together, it frustrated him by falling apart often, especially the wings. However, after a few days of high frustration, he realized if he left one set of wings off, he could build a second space ship from the set and the original ship still looked cool. (He decided the modified X-wing was now a "T-wing".) Gradually, the set morphed and combined with other LEGOs into a large variety of made-up space ships resembling Star Wars ships. As a mother (and Lego fan since childhood) *this* is what I love to see. The special spaceship-like pieces from the set have helped him build some amazing ships. Considering the amount of time he has spent with this set and the ways in which his imagination has been sparked, I think my son would agree with me when I say that the set was well worth his money!
This was a Christmas present for my almost 18 year old grandson. He has been making these since he was around 7. He would make the models as soon as he got them. Every year they got bigger and bigger. They sit on specially made shelves in his bedroom. He was so excited to get the xwing fighter. All his Legos have been from the Star Wars collection. These are great gifts for kids if any age. Oh and once he starts it he doesnt stop til its finished!!
I would recommend this set for any kid who loves Lego/Star Wars, and especially younger kids who like to play with their Legos, because this is one of the funnest to play with with all of the mini figures, movable wings, landing gear, etc...It took me about 1.5 - 2 hrs. tops to build, and it is very easy to build.Overall it looks pretty cool with all of the different colored bricks mixed up, and the set as a whole is awesome.Pros.- 5 mini figures (the original R2-D2!!! Leia, Han, Luke, Chewbacca!!! and Wedge Antilles)- The Lego piece on each top wing that are the starfighter identification can be changed from Red Five (Luke) to Red Three (Wedge) depending upon who you have in the cockpit.- The locking S-Foils work very smoothly and look awesome when in the ... For avid Star Wars fans who know the X-Wing has purple-colored engines, the engines on this Lego set are a burnt out orange instead of the light purple.
Bottom engine mounts connect at only 2 places next to each other and fall off very easy. The top Engine mounts are stronger but unfortunately they are part of the X-Wing expansion system which is basically a pivot that when turned forces to Wings to open against the resistance of 3 sets of rubber bands on each wing. If the pins used as a whole for holding LEGO parts together are not made to exact specs then an engine gets forced off its mounting if opened to a typical X-Wing position. The pivots are made from pieces shaped as barrels, not round ones that would have least resistance against the parts their trying to open. Nor are the wings securely mounted as a slip of the hand during assembly tore off a top wing and use of force between wings put them back together. ... Fortunately I use my Star Wars collection for display, as the front end is securely mounted many added pieces like the Lazer Guns like to fall off and I see someone using it for play continously putting parts back on. You can obviously tell the diffence between the older style and newer ones. I would have engineered the wings as single pieces, worked in more support for the wing expanders and used a ball shape to force open the wings and better enging mounting. I can see special handling would be necessary like toward the front. But most clearly is the Star Wars and Clone Wars are being phased out and new products introduced such a demonic beasts or an old faithful LEGO CITY. I'll stick to my favorite and find them not on LEGO's site but elsewhere however why should LEGO let someone else sell discontinued items when as with this one most parts were made from existing parts, the only thing I could think of being a problem is the second Death Star from Episode 4. My next project.Larry
I'm not a big fan of this set myself, its very fun to play with, the S-foil design is very nice but the model isn't very accurate. The engines are meant to sit more or less touching when the S-foils are closed, but in this design they sit very far apart. It may just be me being pedantic, but it looks rather ridiculous as it is. Otherwise, the body is far too large at the back around the cockpit, and appears to be shaped to fit the mechanism rather than shaped like an actual x-wing.On to the positives, of which there are also plenty. The body, although mishapen does contain a nice storage space for blasters or a lightsabre, room for an astromech, and a very smooth S-foil design. But overall this is a cool set
I have had this for a while and I have been wanting to get this x-wing for a long before. I still can't believe they are selling the same set released from 2006 and have not replaced it with a newer version. However, they have updated this set to have new parts replacing older parts; I am not so pleased with them replacing the older lightsaber hilt. It's still a good set nonetheless-definitely my favourite-and I would recomment it to any Star Wars or Lego fan alike. The minifigures have been quite outdated in a newer generation where most minifigures from licensed themes have extraordinary amounts of detail. For that reason, these figures are hard to find. Wedge Antilles is still exclusive to the set and he has perhaps the best rebel details. To note upon, Han Solo ... For that reason, these figures are hard to find. Wedge Antilles is still exclusive to the set and he has perhaps the best rebel details. To note upon, Han Solo now has the newer face and Luke now has the chrome lightsaber hilt as opposed to the silver one. This is actually my first Chewbacca and Leia and I am quite glad that I finally got those two. Luke is a great figure as well. Although these figures are no longer as detailed as the figures today, they are still good to have and get the classic crew.Overall, the model is much sturdier than many other starfighters nowadays. To note upon, newer technic pieces have replaced to older kind. As for the play features, the s-foils open nicely and so does the cockpit. The storage compartment however doesn't. You may experience the engines and wings to be quite fragile when you first play with it but it becomes less of a problem as time passes. When flying it around, the nose is fastly secured to the body of the starfighter. Definitely a strong design and everything stays together, even artoo in the ship. This ship has a good blend of colours and works to scale with the minifigures. You get a few printed pieces that makes the ship as more realistic to the movies as can get. Fairly big and very eye-catchy.The pricing for this set is quite expensive but compared to the ARC-170 and T-6, it succeeds by sheer piece count. If you own the previous X-Wing with Yoda's hut, this version may be useless to you bearing many of the same resemblences. After all, it is well worth it to simply own the famous X-Wing Starfighter as opposed to random starfighters seen in The Clone Wars.
