It's an old set, but has to be one of the best technics sets ever. Amazing gearbox design, so clever. Good play value once built. Amazing.

Hi - I'm a 49 year old attorney, wife, kids, dog, etc. - Lego is not my life. I built a supercar about 18 years ago with my dad and marveled with the gears and moving parts, and built version 2 of the same car a few years later. I recently built the 24 hours race car (green) and enjoyed it. Nothing prepared me for the Crane - it was INCREDIBLE. Tons of parts. Zillions of gears. Incredible detail and functionality - I have no idea how they design these, but the engineers are geniuses. Part 1 is the truck - that has the most pieces and took the most time - probably about a week, working on it about 2 to 3 hours/night. the steering is incredible - including wheels in the back turning opposite to those in the front. it has working "outriggers" - those upside down yellow Ts you see in the photos - they help lift and stabilize the truck. the next section was the cab or whatever you call it - that had the most gears, and also the motor and battery box. very enjoyable building that as well. last was the actual crane - and again, well engineered and a lot of fun. it actually uses gears AND string to leverage the motion of the crane - in addition to the string for the hook/claw. the motor has 2 directions - red and white - so one is direction A,and the other is the reverse - there is a gear selector on the truck for the outriggers - the gear has 2 selections (so 4 things happen based on red or green on the motor) and the cab has a 4 way selector - one enables the gear selector on the truck, the other 3 operate the crane - extend or retract, raise or lower the arm, and raise or lower the claw. i don't know why this was discontinued - if you can get this, grab it - i can't imagine a better or more enjoyable lego kit. it can be disassembled and rebuilt into a different configuration - i wouldn't - i'd just follow the instructions carefully, take my time, and enjoy. i'm not sure where i'll store this - at home or my office - i'm not likely to ever play with it again - however, it was really enjoyable to build.

Well I'm really impressed by this mobile crane. Just would of been nicer if the boom could of extended a bit longer, cause its length is quite a bit shorter fully extended compared to the rough terrain crane. Also the pivot joints that are used to operate the boom extension can break under stress when the motor clutch kicks in. Ive already had to order a new pivot joint. But I do like its length, durability, playability and love how the stabilizers extend and drop. Very cool. All the other model mobile cranes Lego has made are a complete joke compared this model. None other compares. If you're a technic collector, this a great one to add to your collection.
