Before buying this monitor I had three key criteria it had to meet1. A true 1ms response time2. 1440p @144hz3. There is some IPS glow and some light backlight bleed as is the norm for IPS panels and the contrast ratio isn't the best, also as is the norm, but I don't want to spend $2500 on a FALD IPS money pit of a monitor that requires a screaming 90db 120mm internal fan spinning at 3000 rpm just to keep it cool.tldr Buy it if you want a very well balanced gaming monitor for a reasonable price, compared to everything else on the market.

It means the deep blacks within videos/movies that appear on screen look more like very dark grey and at bad angels there is shiny reflections/glowing from the corners of the screen but for games you can work around that with built in features/options as I described above. Also easy fix is to just turn on a lamp or burn some candles which will brighten up the room a little thus negating some of the IPS glow. But with that said this small downside does not have a negative impact on me with my every day enjoyment/experience with it, but it might for someone who like I said, "Really Loves" to watch scary horror flicks or prefers to work/edit in the dark. Overall: This LG UltraGear QHD LED IPS Monitor is a premium (Savage!) For the $400+ price-tag this is one of the top 5 best of the best gaming monitors you can buy hands down!!. I love this monitor, let's just get that out of the way. I miss my curved monitor but I can deal without a curve to get the experience that this monitor delivers. Right out of the box, I had no issues, no dead pixels, minimal bleed and assembly was easy. I love the stand, it's height adjustable and requires minimal force to adjust, it tilts forward and backward, it also rotates so you can turn the monitor to rest in a portrait position. It's Vesa compatible, 100 x 100 I believe. The menu is pretty easy to navigate and the menu joystick isn't irritating to use.But the meat and potatoes of this monitor are the nano IPS panel, G-sync goodness, 2k eye candy and 144 glorious frames per second. Why put together a pc to play games if it won't look good.

I am not sure who is to blame here, Nvidia, LG, Microsoft Windows 10, or Dell. I took off 2 stars for this as this is a massive disappointment.- the OSD menu gaming mode presets are set in stone and you cannot mix and match the features you may actually want (144hz, Adaptive-sync, HDF, Fast/Faster response time, DAS mode, etc) A lot of these features are mutually exclusive depending on the preset you choose- overly bright, even at 0% brightness it feels like it is blasting out 10 times as many photons as it needs to which is not ideal for night time low-light use (though the silver lining is that it forces me to go to bed at a reasonable hour)- Windows 10 HDR mode did not work for me. I had to turn off the stock Windows HDR mode, as it was preventing games from running at high frame rates / 144hz and in fact was causing weird FPS drop issues. Once again, I am not sure if it's Nvidia's or LG's or Microsoft's fault there, but something about these drivers is very glitchy. Once turned off, games run fine, but obviously I can't use the standard desktop HDR mode. I don't really like it, but this may be important to you.Overall I am disappointed that all these fancy features are not "plug-and-play" and are in fact super glitchy, difficult to configure, and don't play nice with other monitors.Conclusion:Nice monitor for gaming if you are using a single monitor setup.Avoid if you want to run multiple monitors or use the HDR mode in Windows 10.
I bought two of these 27-GN850’s and got them installed about a week ago. These replace 2 22” Dell monitors, so the larger size is definitely a change - and a welcome one at that. The screens are sharp and bright. There’s a very small amount of back-light bleed when blacks are present in the corner, but not anywhere near enough to bother me at all.I like that the monitors support Display Port and 2 HDMI’s. I use my Surface Laptop 3 for both work and pleasure, through a Surface Dock 2 and to each monitor via USB-C to Display Port cables. The monitor ... MoreI bought two of these 27-GN850’s and got them installed about a week ago. These replace 2 22” Dell monitors, so the larger size is definitely a change - and a welcome one at that. The screens are sharp and bright. There’s a very small amount of back-light bleed when blacks are present in the corner, but not anywhere near enough to bother me at all.I like that the monitors support Display Port and 2 HDMI’s. I use my Surface Laptop 3 for both work and pleasure, through a Surface Dock 2 and to each monitor via USB-C to Display Port cables. I also run my Xbox Series S through a sound bar, then to the left monitor via HDMI - all is mostly good. The monitor does accept 4K signal, though, so I have my Xbox running at 4K-60hz in the settings. I would chalk this up as an Xbox issue, not a monitor issue.My biggest issue is that the included monitor stands are so ridiculously huge and awkward that they really don’t work well for a standard PC desk. You can see in the second picture that the majority of the back of the stand is actually hanging off my desk. Good thing there’s a wall there to keep it from falling. It was either that or have the monitors leaning off the front of the the desk and risk them tipping over off the front. Again, HUGE stands. I highly recommend either having a large desk with a good surface area or figure out another way to mount the monitors on maybe a VESA stand or some other solution. I may look into doing this myself in the near future. The stands aren’t wobbly, they’re heavy and sturdy, so I don’t worry about stability, they just take up A LOT more room than you’d expect. Oh, and don’t be fooled by the “adjustable height”, these stands don’t go down near as far as you’d hope - my Dell monitor stands put these stands to shame in that regard.Anyway, good monitors, crisp, clear, bright, great quality, heavy duty but awkward stands and good selection of inputs. Very satisfied. I recommend the monitors for the monitor aspect if you can deal with the stands being what they are or find a different mounting solution!

You'll get beautiful and accurate colors this way.It took a fair bit of fiddling to get the high refresh rate to work, but that's Windows' fault, not the monitor's.The high refresh rate is buttery smooth in games that can take advantage of it, as expected. Unlike some other LG monitors with similar prices and capabilities, this one is G-Sync compatible, which will be important to you if you use an Nvidia GPU.The stand is extremely sturdy, and best of all, can pivot, so you can rotate the monitor to portrait mode at any time, a great feature for digital comics, or anything that involves large amounts of text (e.g. message boards, PDFs, social media, etc.).There are cheaper QHD high refresh rate monitors that don't look as good, and better-looking monitors that cost an arm and a leg. This is arguably the best bang for the buck in this price range.

I say this because out of the 8 preset "game mode" settings, not a single one allows you to fully adjust all the picture quality settings. Out of the following, Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, Gamma, Color Temp, R/G/B, Black Level, and DFC, you will always find one or more are greyed out, and you simply cannot adjust the image to your full liking, without utilizing 3rd party software. I find this unacceptable, on any image device, be it televisions projectors, and most definitely PC monitors.The power cable features a cord that connects to the PC and a separate box you plug into the wall and the other end from the PC's cord. I haver an issue with the cord that connects to the PC simply because it's extremely thin and feels cheap. Previous PC monitors I've owned features a thicker cable, and generally felt more quality. I'm also fearful that if a cat or dog got anywhere near the power cable, it would take no time at all to instantly cause damage. It's just so flimsy.My ultimate issue and biggest reason for giving the monitor I received a 2 star rating and poor score for quality. The monitor I received arrived in a damaged box, which alone would be no problem. However, once I opened the box I found that the foam bag placed around the monitor screen itself, was torn down the back. I thought this was odd as everything inside was tightly packed, and there's no way the bag tore in shipping. As I gently lifted the monitor out of the insert I turned it over, I looked over the screen itself and to my surprise, there were not 1, not 2, but 3 scratches on the screen itself. I grabbed electronics monitor safe cleaner and a microfiber cloth and tried to see if these scratches were superficial or just smudges, but no, they are legitimate scratches... I even swore one was a hair of some kind, but no... This is infuriating for something you bought brand new... I believe this happened in packaging on LG's side, as the contents inside the box and very snug in their places, there is no way this happened in shipping. This forces me to feel LG threw this monitor very carelessly into the box and sent it out with no regard for quality control. I've included pictures of the scratches.Overall:The monitor has a decent quality stand, great response time, pretty picture (with 3rd party software), a less than ideal UI, and cheaper components than other monitor's I've owned. If this monitor had arrived in good condition, as expected when buying a brand new product, I'd be very happy. But receiving a scratched up product is unacceptable...

It boasts a 240HZ TN panel with <5 MS response times and an exclusive blur reduction feature called DyAc, which makes for a buttery smooth FPS experience. However, the biggest drawback of this king of kings is also its biggest advantage, it’s TN panel.There are 3 types of panels a monitor can have. TN, VA, and IPS.TNs have excellent response times, but really bad colors and poor viewing angles (response time is how fast a pixel changes colors. so if you’re in a game looking at some trees and move, a faster response time means the trees go from one position to the next with barely any blur as they move across your screen)VAs have really great blacks and whites because of high contrast ratio and average viewing angles however they have abysmal response times and ghosting which is why for gaming they are largely avoided. Personally I’ve experienced a few VA panels and they’ve all been a blurry mess, this might change with Samsung’s Odyssey line but only time will tell. (contrast ratio is the difference between the brightest white a pixel can display and darkest black)IPSs have accurate colors, fantastic viewing angles, and low response times (not as fast as TN), however they generally suffer from really poor contrast ratios and something called backlight bleed which is a bright glow usually in the corners of the screen. It completely varies on how bad backlight bleed is, on some panels it’s non existent and others it’s really bad. Most of the time it’s the former so generally it’s not a concern.Now that you know about what sets each panel apart, we can get into what makes this monitor so great. Unlike other IPS monitors, this one uses a Nano-IPS display, which at first may seem like a marketing gimmick but in reality is actually what ends up making this thing so special.First, you get all the benefits of regular IPS as listed above. So great viewing angles, accurate consistent colors and good response times. Nano-IPS on the other hand allows this display to have more saturated, vibrant colors due to it utilizing 98% of the DCI-P3 color space (the cinema standard) compared to regular IPS which only utilizes sRGB color space. Now, some people argue this is bad because a lot of content utilizes the sRGB color space, so most of the content you use on here will end up being over-saturated giving you slightly inaccurate colors compared to a regular IPS. However, LG foresaw this being an issue so they added an extra preset in the monitor that disables the DCI-P3 color gamut and gives you the default sRGB color gamut if you want it. In my opinion, the DCI-P3 color gamut is what makes this monitor shine as colors look so much more vivid and pretty compared to regular sRGB, but if you truly need those accurate colors for photo editing LG gives you the option to disable it. Nano-IPS makes for a colorful, rich gaming experience that you’d be missing without.Now, for gaming the most important benefit of Nano-IPS is the TN like response times LG was able to achieve with an IPS display. This monitor is able to achieve <5MS response times that are nearly just as fast as the most popular TN panels, throughout all refresh rates. The reason I say “all refresh rates” is because the only real competition to this monitor is the ASUS VG27AQ which has similar specs but with the added benefit of Blur Reduction technology. Blur Reduction or ELMB further reduces blur and makes motion even more fluid on the ASUS compared to the LG, sort of the like DyAc on my 240hz BenQ, however it only works properly at high refresh rates which most people won’t be able to achieve on a 1440p display. Which is why the LG having such fast response times on all refresh rates is so important, and why I think it’s the better choice.So, what does this all mean? For 500$ you get a competitive ready high refresh rate, high resolution monitor with vibrant rich colors and TN like response times, without TNs weaknesses. Taking all of this into consideration, LG has a clear winner on their hands and it’ll be a while before we see anything better. The only real flaw with this monitor is the lack of blur reduction tech and poor contrast ratios, but the latter is intrinsic to all IPS displays which makes it a non-issue especially considering the vibrancy of the colors on this panel.For now, my 500$ BenQ will have to suffice as a secondary monitor as I can’t bare to look at a 1080p TN panel again after experiencing this monitor for the short time I’ve had it. I’ve attached some pictures comparing this monitor and the BenQ, mostly for color comparison. I also had an Aw3418DW ultrawide before this monitor but ended up returning it because paying a 500$ premium for 3 extra inches on the sides wasn’t worth it to me.Buy it.

Of course it makes up for it with wider viewing angles and more accurate out of the box colors. The other cons is I wish it had more ports. It has two HDMI ports and one display port, this would have been better served with two HDMI ports and two Display ports. Or even a Mini Displayport. Performance overall for Display port is better than HDMI, the cables aren't as common but Display Port is on almost all Laptops and Desktops now.In conclusion, buy the monitor if you're looking to get the best WQHD bang for your buck out there.
