This is a handy, well made water purifier. It will be indispensable for frequent campers and adventurers. It's easy to use and has the instructions printed on the bag to guide you until you have it all figured out. The wide mouth of the bag makes it easy to fill, and there's an area on the side of the bag where you can see how much water is int he bag at a glance. It filters slowly, but this makes me more confident that the water I will be drinking is safe to drink. The bag is quite large and holds a good amount of water (12 liters) so it will be great for a group of people. A little patience is required for filling your drinking container - it's a trickle, so it's not going to come through the filter as quickly as filling your cup from a kitchen faucet. Ultimately ... Ultimately though it's more convenient to me to use this than to lug water bottles around or boil water. You could also place a large container underneath the tube for collecting water while you're off doing other things. We actually brought water bottles with us as a back up, just in case we weren't happy with the performance of the filter or the flavor of the water, but we never used them. It's easy to snap the strap around a tree branch for hanging. The bag empties and rolls up quickly and easily and has a carrying bag to store it in. When empty, it's extremely lightweight, and when full you will be able to carry it around easily from your water source to your campsite with the carrying strap. As far as the flavor of the water goes, it's pretty good! I was pleasantly surprised by how flavorless it was, and it came out crystal clear. It's not as good as tap or bottled water, but it's not bad at all.

I bought the 12L for hurricane prep. Opened it today and got it all set up. Took forever to get any “clean” water to flow from the blue hose and when it did it was only a drip. Just checked the device again and after 2 hours, all of the water has leaked out of the bag. I suspect it leaked out via the red “dirty water” spout because it leaks continually, even in the shut off position. Maybe I am just unlucky and received a defective item but no matter because it’s gonna give me bupkis during the hurricanes.

I bought this for hurricane prep and had an issue with it dripping during the first use. LifeStraw reached back to me immediately with an apology, well wishes for safety, a possible solution, and a willingness to replace under their warranty if I wanted to. The solution they provided completely resolved the problem (a hose came a bit loose but it was hard to see unless you’re looking for it). After 36 hours of successful use, I’m happy to say that this was a great purchase. I get clean water on demand and peace of mind during hurricane season, Mother Earth gets less garbage, and kids get safe drinking water. Win, win, and bonus win for this social worker.

I’ve been using personal-size LifeStraw products for years. Then, due to my increasing awareness of how vulnerable we are to various disaster scenarios, I thought I should buy and keep on hand, a LifeStraw product, capable of filtering a larger volume of water, for myself as well as loved ones. I haven’t used my LifeStraw Mission yet but I know it’s going to perform beautifully for the vital, water needs of my family, just in case. Thank you LifeStraw!
I distance backpack. Also live on the coast of Florida working with Mass Care for the Red Cross. Hurricanes can knock out power for weeks on end. It gets bad when it's bad. I put gear in four categories. 1) "Trash", 2) "Really cool", 3) "Outstanding" and 4) "I would bet my life on this piece of kit." This is in the last category. Absolute pore size of 0.2 microns is as small as viruses get, as far as science has found. It is a specialist piece of kit though. Does nothing for bad taste, Chlorine, turbidity, etc. But there are no life forms in the water, which is key. If you are in to stoves... This is the Trangia of portable water purifiers. I would get the 12 liter over the 5 for the flexibility. It's only a couple buck and ounces more. Sweet piece of kit.
I used a personal water filter before and found this product really works well. This time, our family and friends 6 people went camping for three days during the vacation. This Lifestraw successfully kept around 5-gallon water coolers and drinkable water for these days. We used the water to cook and drink, and did not get diarrhea or stomach flu. It's very convenient and easy to use and with no pumping or boiling. We do not need to buy a lot of bottles of waters. Pre-filter was really good and you see all of the particles out of the filter, but some smaller ones will stick to the pre-filter, and you have to clean. I tried several times and found you have to rinse the bag several times to clean the prefilter first. You have to make sure the red tap with the highest ... I tried several times and found you have to rinse the bag several times to clean the prefilter first. You have to make sure the red tap with the highest flow and flush the red bulb and then pour the muddy water. I repeated these steps five times, and the water became clear and clear. The process only took a few minutes, and then you can drink the water. I plan to purchase more to send to my friends who like to go mountain climbing. One drawback is the bag, and sometimes I am worried if the bag will be broken.
My advice to you all when purchasing any product that is vital to you and your family's survival like clean water, food, cook/store, backup energy, shelter, lighting, communication, etc. Is to please inspect all parts as soon as you get them instead of waiting till you need it, for weak or missing components vital to longevity function, educate yourself and family to be familiar with all it's functions, why and how and if you need to use it, and plan and discuss with your team places and code words and grandpa's numbers on the fridge with aunt Mary, the neighbor and etc so everyone's on the same page and this will increase overall moral and sense of security this kind of preparation should result for you and fam, but it can also do the opposite. Fear mongering is everywhere and if you truthfully and confidently discuss this with especially younger members, they will feel some relief from their confusion, and misinterpreted info from friends and media will be better filtered by them if they feel included and respected enough to be taught these cool and really important life long skills that can ensure that what ever situation may arise, camping trip, vehicle break down, power outage, emergency drills or real deals, injury, zombie clowns from outer space, they will rest assured and even feel pride that they are ready too for anything and that alone to a little is priceless, and don't forget to make it an encouraging and empowering learning experience, not a nightmare inducing future psychiatry bill. And your pets? Don't forget they are a part of your family team too! No matter if you are ignoring or subscribing or whatever reason you're here looking at life straws, everyone needs to learn basic survival skills from as early as possible and never stop learning them and put them into practice, even if you don't ever have to use them. Knots, how to fish, hunt ,trap, pick etc, why and how much food and water you need, the basics what to eat and how to identify, collect the proper understanding of what can be in water if you don't filter it properly and how to do all these things without your tested items and the importance of a clean camp and being mindful in general of your impact anywhere you go in nature, and teachand learn from others and remember one thing, who the real enemy is. We are all human beings who have families they love and will protect at all cost and we should not fear each other like they want us to. There's no time like now to speak with your loved ones friends and neighbors and get a feel for the general mindset going on around you. There's strength in numbers and that will always be a formidable threat to those seeking to exploit any situation to their advantage. Decide within your own heart what your personal lines in the sand are and how unbreakable.
While filling the bag on a beach (where I was camping) some sand got into the spring where the hose connects. The spring jammed and made attaching the hose impossible. When I tried to press the spring it’s plastic casing broke.Could I get a replacement for this part? It looks like it can be removed and a new one inserted.
First use was 5-night trip to BWCA 7/22. 2 of us, so volume a bit of overkill, but very nice to have plenty of easily accessible potable water at a base camp.Pretty lightweight and fairly compact when empty.Very easy to fill out in lake. Scoop water into bag and carefully lift over gunwale into boat and seal top/clip shut. When full, weight makes it hard to hang if doing alone.Once up, very convenient and pretty fast flow. One bad mark: before first bag fill used up, after only about 3 L filtered, red valve developed drip/leak. Could not get drip to stop despite messing with valve and trying several positions. Ended up having to hook blue filter piece and hose with red valve up, above level of water in bag. Inconvenient and annoying as unit was brand new, ... We bought this years ago when we were first going to Nicaragua. We have used it for the last 4ish years on all our trips. (Nica, Mexico, Costa Rica, Taiwan, and Canada.) While we primarily use it for drinking water while overseas (4 to 6 months of the year) we also use it in the airports (a bottle of water can cost $8USD in some airports) We are a family of 4. We also use it while traveling, hiking and camping at home (Canada.) We have always tried to use "blue" water and the cleanest water we can find. But it's not always real clean. As far as we know we have never gotten sick from drinking the water through this thing. We also still have the same one we originally purchased. Even inside our car to make water while traveling.
