The filter system is amazing except for two things which make it frustrating to use:1) the filter only accepts water from the end, not the sides, so there will always be 3-4” of water that you can’t filter.2) the reservoir bag is difficult to fill in shallow streams which are common in Washington. There are no handles that allow you to “scoop” or skim water like you can with a hydroflask. This results in me not being able to get more than 2L of water in shallow streams, then final 500mL I can’t even filter due to problem 1 above.Other than this, the system works great! I have previously used the Katadyn BeFree, but was annoyed that I couldn’t backflush so I switched to this system, which I am hoping will last longer.

I bought this for a backpacking trip and tried to use it once after. There are quite a few design issues with this.1. It's slow at filtering. Other brands filter down smaller but this one dribbles out at a frustratingly slow rate.2. There's no good spot to hold the cap so if you've already used the carbiner to hang the bag, you have to clip it in there if you want to not worry about losing it. It's just a stupid hassel.3. When you want to cap it with the filter engaged and the bag full of water, the cap will leak water.Overall, I know there are better products for a little bit more money, so I had no qualms returning this for something else. This is geared more towards the budget concious who may not be as tuned to these inconveniences.

I received this product for free as part of a promotion. There are a ton of things I love about this filter and very few I don't. The biggest pro in my book is the modularity of each piece. The filter itself is very small and can fit into your pocket if you want to go fast and light. On longer trail runs, I'll just bring the filter and a foot long section of tubing to drink from. The filter screws onto plastic bottles (Smartwater, etc.) but beware it doesn't let air back in (more on this later). For longer backpacking trips, the bag, tube, cleaning syringe, and stopping mechanism that come with the product are excellent. The plastic stopper likely won't hold up to durable use but seems like a neat product (stops, locks, and adjusts flow as you please).I ... The plastic stopper likely won't hold up to durable use but seems like a neat product (stops, locks, and adjusts flow as you please).I unfortunately received the product later than expected and could not take it into the backcountry but tested it on some of the most difficult water possible: the Southern New Jersey coast. For the uninitiated, it tastes like it's approximately 11% seawater. After several rounds of double blind tastes tests, every single person picked the water filtered by the lifestraw over conventional filters (I think we used a Brita?). High marks in the front country. I tested it a few times while running trail and I didn't get any waterborne illnesses (so far) so it seems to work well in that regard as well. The only constructive feedback I have is threefold:1. It's not the lightest option. This is really, *really* nitpicky because it works so dang well but it could be a few ounces lighter. That being said, I still plan to bring this along for any trip that I expect to filter water because the whole system is so intuitive.2. It's very difficult to draw air back through the filter. That means that if it's used on a plastic water bottle, it'll create suction that can only be relieved by opening the lid slightly to let air in. Not really a big deal but sort of annoying to keep it easy to drink.3. There's not a great way to store everything together. The top strap is great but gets in the way when I wrap the filter, cleaning syringe, and tube like a burrito in the bag. Again, very nit-picky but it would be nice to have that as an option.Overall, it's an excellent product from an ethical company at a decent price point.

After several years of hard use, I ruptured the seam on my GravityWorks dirty bladder, and decided to replace the whole system. After reading a bunch of reviews, I decided the LifeStraw Gravity was worth a shot. It seemed to offer comparable performance at a lower cost. I was impressed the first couple trips I took it on, but that was the end of the hiking season and it went into my gear storage for the winter. I pulled it out again a couple days ago for my first trip of the year, but when I went to filter water for dinner, the filtration rate was almost zero. Unless I squeezed the dirty bladder to an extreme degree, there was virtually no flow. It took me a few minutes to figure out what I was looking at and how to set it up once out of the box. After watching a quick video by the manufacturer though this thing is easy! I am now wondering why this is my first gravity filter after having used other types for years. I really like that I can fill this up and rather quickly and effortlessly fill all mine and my wifes' bottles but then also fill up to 3 additional liters to carry with if we are worried about the next water source. When testing in the sink I made the mistake of putting the plug cap directly onto the filter which leaks like crazy. Be sure you plug the 'neck cap' OR if you have the hose attached to the filter then the pinch clip worked well for me.The bag material feels like a good quality to ... The adjustable strap and carabiner work. I do wish that the little strap loop that you hook the carabiner into had some structure to it so that you could slide the carabiner in it a little easier but I feel that is getting a little nitpicky. Overall I'm happy and excited to see how this performs over the life of all it's adventures.
I've always wanted a gravity filter bag for when I'm hiking and camping. One of the great things about gravity filter systems is that you can keep setting up camp while your water filters itself--you don't need to stand by a river or lake pumping water. The LifeStraw bag pulls this off well with this 3L system. The bag material is thick and well crafted with hefty welds that give me confidence it won't tear or blow out during use, and the included adjustable strap and carabiner make hanging this a lot easier. I also really like that LifeStraw engineered this bag so that you can use it as a squeeze filter: literally just remove the small cap and squeeze the water bladder. I also really like that LifeStraw engineered this bag so that you can use it as a squeeze filter: literally just remove the small cap and squeeze the water bladder. This is really helpful if you are trying to get cooking going but don't want to deal with the tube to fill your pot or drinking cup, or if there are no great spots to hang the bag. Another awesome feature is that the filter threading is the same as most water bottles, meaning that you can, in a pinch, screw it onto a standard throw-away water bottle (check out the picture of the threading). Back-flushing is a breeze, too. Included in the gear is a syringe that screws on the filter, and is easy enough to use (just make sure you always back-flush wish clean drinking water!).Filling the bag is pretty easy, but I wish that the opening was bigger. It's still big enough to fill pretty easily, but a bigger opening would be better and would make drying it out after use easier. Also, the flow isn't bad, but it's still a bit slow--that's pretty common for gravity filtration systems so the gripe is minor. One thing you should know: because the filter is on the outside of the bag for gravity use, there's no way to allow sediment in the water to settle out and not go through the filter, which means that the filter will clog faster. Another gripe: I wish that the filter element was larger. Smaller filters get clogged quicker and require more back-flushing to maintain and this would last longer with a larger filter.Overall, I really like this filter system, and it performs well and the versatility make this system definitely a buy. The 0.2 micron filter removes all bacteria and parasites as well as microplastics. It's relatively compact, the hose has a connector to clip into most modern water bladders, and it's easy to use.
I used the LifeStraw 3L system multiple times on my backpacking trip. First off I have tried a few other water filtration devices, MSR Guardian system, and also Platypus gravity fed system. I will stick my comparison to the Platpus and Lifestraw as they are design comparable. However, that is where the comparison really ends. The Lifestraw is very simple. Limited components to lose or fail. Very easy backwash system and it actually works in a somewhat fast fashion for a gravity-fed system. The Bag itself seems sturdy and it will not puncture easily. I didn't baby it and it rolled on the ground without any issues. I also enjoyed the attached strap for hanging it and how you can alter that so it is a sling. Other than that this is a great option to filter the larger amount of water for cooking or replenishing your water reserves.
Overall, this is a solid piece of gear. In particular, I can attest to its functionality and build quality.First and foremost, does it do what it says it does? Yes. It filters water very well. I got this system just before a cross-country move, and put it to use largely to transform less than tasty regional tap water into significantly improved tasting filtered water. Now, perhaps taste improvement might be psychosomatic, but for some of our refills we had to rely on gas stations, hotels, and other less-than-ideal faucets/hoses. Some water was noticeably brown or cloudy coming out the tap, but filtered out clear after a few minutes moving through the life straw. I didn't have a microscope handy, but it passes the taste and eyeball test.I've seen in promotional ... MoreOverall, this is a solid piece of gear. I didn't have a microscope handy, but it passes the taste and eyeball test.I've seen in promotional materials for the lifestraw that this bladder is their "toughest ever", and perhaps the sturdiest in the market. I have not attempted to directly compare it through abuse testing, but I will say my previous setup was a Sawyer Squeeze in conjunction with an MSR dromedary. While the LIfeStraw bladder isn't as obviously rugged (the dromedary is literally rough and textured to the touch; outdoor store employees and enthusiasts all told me they are comfortable setting their dromedaries near flame; some even tell me they've boiled water in them), it tolerated being tossed into the back of our car (for at least a few hundred miles, atop some jagged/splintery firewood) and withstood being dragged along rough campground rock and sand. For our purposes, this was plenty sturdy.I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking to backpack or overland.
This is a solid filter setup worth considering if you are looking at options for group water purification, but also want to have a light personal filter for faster trips.Typically, I have always just used an individual filter for my backpacking and bikepacking trips. They tend to be smaller, lighter and allow for redundancy. However, I recently used this filter on a group trip when we were base camping, and our water source was...questionable. It's great that this package gives you everything you would need to have both. Just add a small soft bottle and use only the filter and your set. This gravity filter worked great for me. I took it on a desert backpacking trip and was happy with its performance. It filtered water quickly (though I have so far tested it in pretty clean-looking water) and seems durable so far.In my opinion, the biggest benefit is its versatility.- The carabiner and adjustable strap made it easy to hang up while it was filtering.- You can fill the bag and put the cap on to allow you to carry water and filter it later.- The flow control clip was nice for pausing filtration, switching water bottles to filter into, etc.- Best of all, you can use the filter with a water bottle (or as a straw) instead of on the gravity filter. I got the dark gray color, on which the water storage back is black and the hard plastic pieces are dark gray. I don’t care about the aesthetics of my water filters, but the dark color makes it hard to see the contents of the bag. I could see water levels well enough, but I’d prefer a transparent reservoir so that I can see what color the water is and if it has any large particles, etc. But I don’t know if you could make this lightweight material clear or if there is a tradeoff that needs to be considered.
