I bought this one because it was compact and could get into small spaces. My first Makita this and my last drill was a DeWalt which had to be replaced when new! The DeWalt now smokes on startup every time!!! My first cordless, a few years ago, was a Bosch , which stood up to everything - only chucked it when the batteries became hard to get and expensive! This one worked well for a few months then the chuck began to move noticeably up and down just like the returned DeWalt. As another reviewer suggested - front bearing shot!!. I started breaking small (less than 3 mm dia drills)Fortunately for me it was swapped by Electricfix with no hassle , I hope this one lasts longer as I have bought other Makita kit which shares the same batteries!!

I bought this drill 4 years ago as an entry onto the Makita platform. The drill has never failed me in any task whilst renovating my 2 bed terraced house. Plenty of power, the batteries last forever in this drill. Could not recommend enough to anyone looking at a quality drill to do their own DIY or even a proffesional. My father is a carpenter and also has this drill along side the BL Impact Driver. He thinks they are amazing!

DIY/homeowner review:Things that are good:-very sturdy but light carry case with plenty of extra space for bits and other junk-great batteries, keep cool, charge fast with the included charger, for what I'm using the drill they last a loooong time-very light weight drill when compared to my other 3 brushed drills (no surprise)-plastic ergonomic and cleans really good. Sweat and rust dust from a garden chair stained the drill badly but a quick wipe days later with a wet wipe got the plastic shiny new-does what it's supposed to with ease, light masonry, any type of wood drilling around the house, 2 mm steel plate no problem and very good at screwing because the trigger is very responsive-best feature of the drill, being brushless the drill is ... I just purchased two weeks ago and have found using this drill driver a great piece of kit and excellent quality for the price.Battery power I was amazed how many screws I could do on a single charge and it comes with 2 batteries. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a quality DIY tool that can be used for large projects.
Brought this as a gift for my father in law. As I already have one the same I knew he would love it, it’s never let me down and as great power and great battery time. He’s had a very merry Christmas putting up elves,,, oops I mean shelves.🤣 great product thank you.
This model is advertised here as "all-metal gearbox" (DHP485Z), or "all-metal gearing" (DHP485SFE- same drill but with accessories), but this is not quite correct. This has metal gears within a plastic gearbox module.Mine has been back to Makita twice for gearbox replacement due to excessive wobble developing in the chuck, which makes drilling a hole (in precisely the direction you want it) a bit hit & miss.Having said that, I have absolutely hammered this drill during our house rebuild and it has never faltered in terms of reliability. The hammer(ish) action is better than other drills I've had and the power is very good for a drill this size, along with excellent battery life too. The wobble is more of an annoyance when needing to drill, say, a small hinge ... The wobble is more of an annoyance when needing to drill, say, a small hinge screw hole... masonry holes and general larger hole drilling is not affected too badly.Considering the high cost of batteries, charger, etc, this pack almost includes the drill for free, but do be aware of the gearbox issue. I have finally had enough and am going to try the all-metal gearbox version (DHP484) to see if that solves my issue
Perfect drill for my needs, just started my electrican course and decided to get some tools. This set is more than enough for what i need it for, if you buy everything individually it works out you near enough get the actual drill for free!
I was just glad to purchase this drill. The drill is heavier at the base than at the drill, so it wont topple over as easy. It is shorter than older drills and will give you more room in confined spaces. This one has the LED light, which I was looking for. Another factor to point out is that this has the more traditional case, which carries like a briefcase. It will carry two spare batteries, as well as the one in the drill. (I had a spare battery already) The case is robust and should last for the life of the drill.
Bought this drill to replace a couple of older ones which were showing signs of batteries needing to be replaced in the near future and it seemed a good compromise to buy a new drill rather than replace the batteries. Being supplied with two batteries was the deciding factor for me as I now can't imagine ever running out of charge.Drill seems to have plenty of power on the jobs I have used it on so far. It's lightweight and has a good ergonomic design.I haven't had the drill long enough to comment on reliability. The only negative I can think of is that it would be better if it was supplied with the bit holder described in the instructions, rather than having to purchase it separately, but this is a minor point.
great to handle, plenty of torque. A single battery lasts for ages on just drilling / driving over a period of a few days - still on 3/4 full after taking out a fence and putting up a new one (assuming the display is accurate!).Wish I'd given up with my cheap own-brand cordless ages ago, this just does what you want it to.Price with 2 x 3ah batteries seems excellent compared to the other big brands and opens the door to buying some bare tools.Negatives;fiddly to adjust from driver / drill / hammer and not move the torque setting with it (minor).Another makita I've used has a floating collar at the base of the chuck, so you don't get surface marks as you drill deeper. Not a deal breaker, but a nice feature that I'd like to have seen here
