I was torn between this Makita and trying the new DeWalt 999 equivalent. Having already a good selection of 18volt Makita tools in the end this seemed the better choice. I also thought its smaller size was a great advantage. It’s a little heavier overall than the 16 year old Makita it replaced, but wow what a difference. The torque is incredible….no trouble screwing 100mm screws into old roof joists..the old machine would have struggled. I bought an expensive 6ah battery too…but it works with older 3 and 5ah just as happily.

A really good professional quality drill. Excellent trigger control, loads of torque. Makes my other cordless Makita drills feel a bit lacking. A nice addition is the clamp on grip which nicely locates nicely against your chest to provide a more secure hold under high torque drilling/screwing. It's a good inch shorter than all my other drills but a little wider. The only tiny minus is the drill is quite heavy but that's probably because of the gearbox housing which is metal. Nice job, FFX!

Much stronger than previous makita drill for not a lot more money. Metal chuck is far better then the plastic makita chucks. Short body is much more convenient. It is a heavy drill but doesn’t bother me at all.

I call this drill the beast cos its a monster !Only thing I hate is the handle Scrapes the paint off first time you use it so what it will be like if u use it loads only time will tell , bad design tho !Other then that its a great product and will brake your wrist if u arnt careful !
The DHP486z is the top of the Makita range and I have yet to need all its power/torque. It perhaps has more torque than needed 130Nm is what I torque wheel bolts up to with a long wrench! Whilst it is supposedly the best of the best I would be a bit unhappy had I paid MRP - 1 - I think it is too noisy, may be that is how brushless motors sound - unpleasantly screechy!2 - The trigger is sensitive and loose accessories in the case can make the LED come on and the battery pack will then discharge and get warm. The torque settings seem to match my old unit which wen to 12 but this one goes on to 21.3 - It is heavy, OK, but I wouldn't want any heavier.I bought bare and then striped off the belt clip and bit holder. I will use a BL1820B for light duty and overhead and a BL1850B and the handle for tough jobs. It will just fit in a DHP487 combi case, but again it is snug what with 2 batteries the DC18RC, the handle, an ML180 and bit packs.I would be over the moon if it were only quieter than my old unit. Oh well.
This order was supplied as separate items, not a complete kit as expected. Case is for a different Makita product and has no inlay for this drill. I didn’t expect that.
This is the latest version of this drill the last one was the 481z, which I had. This is the improved version. So far so good. I use it everyday and it’s working well.
Excellent drill. Makita has got a very good product with this drill. It has the power and torque for all the jobs that I used it on.
Convenient and handy with the tools being in one place all together and transportable. Sturdy cabinet containing the tools and spare batteries making it both easy to store and pick up when required.
