If you look at the reviews on this, you'll see that Marmite is extremely polarizing. Its tag line is that you love it or hate it, and that is 100% accurate. If you check out their website, they've actually done research into why that's the case. They found out that certain genetic markers actually dictate whether you like or dislike Marmite, which is pretty cool because it means that it actually tastes different to people depending on their genetics, much like (disgusting, soapy) cilantro.I feel so bad for people who dislike it. It's similar to soy sauce in saltiness, but it also has a very rich umami as well. Almost like concenrrated bouillon. It is so good when used right. For other Americans who may not be familiar, it's usually served on toast. So toast up ... MoreIf you look at the reviews on this, you'll see that Marmite is extremely polarizing. It tastes very strong and a little bit goes a long way, and that's good because this stuff is pricey in America. My favorite way to use it is as listed above with a little bit of peanut butter on top of it.

Awful chemical taste

This was provided as a substitute for marmite, and as I had run out, thought I would give this a try. Consistency and appearance looked good, hence 2 stars, but the taste was awful. An unpleasant chemical taste, which both my daughter and I could taste. Not for me, and would have preferred Asda's own, which is actually very nice.

This really is better than Marmite! As a lifelong fan of the leading brand I skeptically tried this. Marmite is so offensively expensive. Everyone in my house loves this, we call it fake marmite. It's easier to spread and it seems less harsh.Perfect on toast or in a cheese sandwich. Well done Asda, this is a triumph.

Doesn't quite hit the spot
23 March 2024

Well. I've had this before and it was ok. So I thought I'd have some again. I got halfway down the jar, using it numerous times, and each time I was thinking its missing something. Not the taste of Marmite and in fact I prefer Asda,s yeast spread. So I threw if and will go back to Asda's yeast spread. This is like a lot of Australian's overrated.

It Enhances Food with Extra Umami

I would never spread this on toast. I think you have to be raised eating it to do that. However, a discrete teaspoon added to a soup, a pot of chili, in a stew, or even added to a vinaigrette, turns it a umami bomb. It's kinda does the same thing as minced anchovies, a shot of fish sauce or Maggi Seasoning adds to a meal. It's a meat flavor enhancer.

It is Marmite-love it or hate it

I can’t for the life of me think why a review is necessary. It’s Marmite, it never deviates from the recipe.Consistently tastes the same, over many decades. The price of it is ridiculous. However another supermarket beginning with A sells and own brand one for significantly cheaper and it just as good, if not better

Marmite with a fancy sticker
22 June 2024

I was pleased to get this as a little additional gift for Father’s Day. It was only marmite with a different sticker, but dad seemed chuffed as a marmite lover. It was also the same price as other supermarkets whilst on offer. Other than that, it’s marmite, and as they advertise, you either love it or you hate it.

Not like it used to be
7 September 2024

Haven't bought Marmite for many years as I started buying a reduced salt supermarket own make one. Much cheaper, less salt and better taste and much easier to spread. I like a lot on my toast.Marmite is now quite like liquid plastic in its texture imo. Not easy to spread evenly, definitely less taste than it used to have, and the colour not as deep. Shame Waitrose don't have their own brand of yeast extract, because to be honest, Marmite is now, I feel, a pretty average if not sub-standard product. Especially in terms of value for money.

Tasteless goo
27 March 2023

What on earth happened to this productOn the love it hate it debate I was always more of a Vegemite fan.But as I get older (and older) my taste buds lean to more and more savoury food.So after forty years of dismissal I decided that rather than getting another jar of Vegemite I’d try the old ‘stronger’ Marmite just for a change. It no longer bares any resemblance to the product I loved to hate. The consistency is gooey and rubbery and it no longer has any ‘bite’. Though it’s been a while I can still remember the taste but this, It’s just shockingly bland.Back to Vegemite for me, much nicer.

Used to buy marmite XO because in my opinion it was closer to the marmite I grew up with but it got too expensive then disappeared. Marmite is a bit too burnt and bitter tasting to me whereas this Asda yeast extract is better flavoured and has a little hint of sweetness and definitely no burnt or bitterness. My son agrees. It’s a little thinner and runnier than marmite but that makes it easier to spread. Sorry marmite, you’ve been usurped, this stuff is the bees knees. Won’t be going back
