Martin DX Johnny Cash Acoustic-Electric Guitar Black

$819.03

(170 reviews)

In the early 1970s, Martin Guitar was commissioned to design an all-black lacquered D-35 for country star Johnny Cash. Though Martin had never considered such a request before, an all-black D-35 for the “Man in Black” was custom-made. Cash went on to play his custom D-35 on stage for the next 20 years. In 2006, Martin released a commemorative D-35 Johnny Cash edition. New for 2019, the DX Johnny Cash is a nod to the history between Cash and Martin Guitar. Designed in collaboration with John Carter Cash and the Cash Foundation management team, the guitar features a classic Dreadnought body shape constructed with Jett black high-pressure laminate (HPL) top, back and sides. Like the earlier commemorative edition, this instrument includes a custom fingerboard inlaid with stars and the “CASH” logo. Johnny Cash’s signature appears on the rosette and label. This model comes with Fishman MX electronics and a soft gig bag embroidered with the “CASH” logo and is strung with Martin’s Authentic Acoustic Lifespan 2.0 strings. The DX Johnny Cash was designed to be an accessible and playable guitar for anyone looking to honor the legacy of the legendary musician.

I have already owned 2 X-Series Martin since I went back to playing last summer after being away for 3 years due to a injury. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the both of them but in the long run, they just were not my cup of tea. I had heard about the Martin Johhny Cash model and had seen some videos with great reviews of it, so I ordered one a couple of days ago from another retailer and it came in this morning. To say that I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box and gave my first strum, was a understatement. This is IMO, the best sounding out of the X-Series and you don't even notice that it's all HPL once you start playing it. That's how great it is. This is a great Martin that doesn’t break the bank! The finish and Cash details make this guitar standout anywhere from a living room session to a gig. The Fishman pickup makes this guitar sound great plugged in and it has that Martin warmth that fills a room playing acoustic only. The laminate makeup holds up great in moisture and the added Cash gig bag is a plus for sure. If your like me and are looking for a Martin that stands up to it’s name and keeps you within your budget this is the guitar for you. I’ve gotten nothing but compliments while playing for both the sound and look! Truly is a great guitar for warmth, resonance, and tone and the strings that come standard are pretty great too!

For my 40th birthday, I asked my wife if I could buy this Martin guitar. The price was right, and as a Johnny Cash aficionado, this one fit the bill. If you're skeptical about HPL guitar construction, try this one out and your fears will disappear. (I had a friend of mine compare this to his all-wood Martin, and he was mildly shocked at the build quality and sound of this one, and in some areas, preferred this to his.) This guitar feels great, plays great, looks great, and sounds great. It has a very comfortable neck, the fretwork is very good, and the tuners are adequate. It sounds quite fine acoustically, but plugging it in really opens up the sonic possibilities. The Fishman pickup gives you some great tonal options, from flat EQ to more pronounced highs. ... MoreFor my 40th birthday, I asked my wife if I could buy this Martin guitar. Great Guitar For The Price !
5 February 2022

Overall:I bought this just over a week ago. I was previously playing a Martin OMCX1E which I bought in August of 2021 and down the line, was not happy with it. I needed a more fuller, deeper , tone and this one delivers in spades. This is IMO, the best of Martin's X-Series and I can see why it's been a great seller for them. the sound from tis, is what a HPL acoustic should sound like. It stays in tune like forever, and is just one beautiful looking instrument . I'm not a fan of the included gi bag and may be changing it for a HS case . Other than that , I am very happy with this one.

I like the guitar but they're fragile
22 February 2022

I have seen several of these Johnny Cash guitars get broken from everyday use. I had three so far only one didn't break. One the volume control came apart, another one got a crack in the body and I have seen several of these for sale with similar cracks on the body or sides. Seems to be a very poor quality build. I like the guitar but it's just not very durable. I decided to leave this review because I saw a lot of good reviews from people who just got theirs.. so I decided to leave a review from someone who has owned three over several years. I still own one.. it also developed a small crack recently. I'm not really that hard on my instruments these are just made with a flimsy material I notice.

So OK I had to get over it not being 'real' wood. But it's so cool looking, and it's a Martin sez me. Then I played it. OMG. Usually takes me a while to become close with a guitar... but this one. Great tone, very playable. Unboxed, tuned it up. This is one precision stable beautiful unique instrument. OK, it's not a D35 (yes they make D35 Johnny Cash models as well, which is what the Man in Black played) BUT... it's 1/10 the cost and to my ear about 80/90 percent of the sound.... so for a retired guy like me.. perfect. Ah, not only that but it's on the light side due to the HPL materials, so, I can wear this thing for hours. Pretty tough finish too (which is important when wearing a guitar around the house lol). Did I mention it come pre-PLEK'd since it's a Martin... If it fits your needs, buy it now is my reccomendation.

Would definitely buy this again
28 December 2022

I bought this guitar to use at outdoor events and venues where I wouldn't want to take one of my more expensive guitars. It actually sounds very good and stays in tune with changes in temperature and humidity much better than my all wood Martins and Taylor's. HPL is not the cheap plastic I had imagined. The action and intonation was good out of the box and only 1/4 turn on the truss rod made it perfect for me. The neck is very smooth and the frets are dressed very well. The bass and mids are well balanced with only a little drop off in treble notes. Really nice as a strummer and for vocal accompaniment. I have played it enough to know it's a keeper. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a Martin that won't break the bank.

Wow !!!!
29 January 2022

I bought this a couple of days ago online. It came in yesterday and this is IMO, the best of Martin's X-Series line. The action is perfect and it stays in tune forever ! The sound of this one , is what a HPL guitar should sound like which is, rich and full, and not overly bright like some of the other X-Series come across as. I'm 63 and have been playing now for 50 years and this is, the best acoustic that I have ever come across. I know some of the purists will say that it's HPL and therefore doesn't matter. Well not everyone can afford to shell out the big bucks for a USA , all wood, made Martin , so this one IMO, is the next best thing. The gig bag that came with it, isn't all that, so I'm going to get a HS case for it. I love this guitar and can't put it down, ... MoreI bought this a couple of days ago online. a great gift set not only for Johnny Cash fans
23 May 2022

got this one as a gift so I can't rate value for money ratio :)it does sound fantastic, very rich in all tone ranges. The preamp is very good too, transfers all the frequencies very well. But, you'd probably expect no less from Martin. What's a little odd, is the material used for construction, to what I reckon its all compressed wood / laminate combination, which appears strange at first, but does the job very, very well. You get a piece of gear you can take outside not taking care this much about dryness, humidity, or weather conditions. The "CASH" theme is allover the instrument and gigbag, which is a very nice feature. All is top quality, and looks solid.Would I buy it with my own money? YES :)
