For me this is a great advantage because in the past whenever I needed my pen it was always low on battery life. Also the storage area becomes hidden when the keyboard is raised into the typing position. I am still getting used to the flat pen but one advantage is that it has a magnet so you can set it down on the palm rest and it sticks. The Slim Pen 2 has two buttons that allow you to perform various task in some applications. There is also an led that lets you know when the pen is low on battery.

The inking experience is excellent with no issues that I noted. It’s an excellent tool for navigation, writing or sketching. While the Slim Pen 2 feels better on the screen while writing (better than the Apple Pencil 2 on the iPad’s screen), it still isn’t like writing on paper. It is, after all, a solid nib on a hard glass screen so it’s still slick with not much friction even though the haptic feedback through the pen provides some feeling of texture on the screen. Nevertheless, it doesn’t provide real friction between the nib and screen so expect a similar writing experience to other pens or stylus’s being used on a glass screen.Lastly, there is a special use key on the keyboard called the CoPilot key. Originally, it’s use was to open up a kind of AI assistant that could be directed to not only do what the downloadable version of CoPilot can do on any Windows machine, but for use as a more integrated AI experience with the Surface system enabling you to have CoPilot change settings and similar activities. However, that attribute was stripped away and now the key’s only role is to open CoPilot more as a PWA (like you would get if you opened CoPilot from a web browser). Once open in a window taking up the screen, you chat with it through text input as you would on any computer having CoPilot downloaded on it. It is a disappointing use of a special key taking up space on your keyboard.Overall, the Surface Pro Keyboard and Slim Pen 2 combo are a useful and necessary addition to your Surface Pro. Any intention of AI integration with your Surface Pro is missing and a disappointment lessening its combined capabilities with your Surface Pro.

I'm glad MS has surpassed the 3rd party vendors' drivers options.My biggest issue is that when the part that folds up to secure the table to the display engages, it partially covers the app icons. You can't see the lines to see if an app is open or not if you have pinned apps. This is because too many people like form over function and think "eww, bezels." They were there for a reason.I'll probably end up replacing this with a third party keyboard with a heavier base like I did with my other Surfaces. It's not a bad KB, I just like having one that doesn't require the use of the kickstand.

After a few days of using the keyboard and pen, I've found the experience refreshingly positive in general day-to-day computer usage. I have also edited several videos just using the keyboard/pen vs. a mouse and have found that some functions are quicker using the pen, but trimming/editing clips is more difficult to me, maybe I’m doing something wrong or just need more practice. In my case I think a mouse is still necessary, at least at this point, while I continue to learn using the pen.The track pad is very responsive as are the keys on the keyboard, they have a nice feel and click to both. The Slim Pen stays securely in place within the magnetic storage tray and charges while it's stored. However, I've noticed that it can be challenging to remove from the tray at times. While the magnetic hold is strong and secure, it can be tricky to extract the pen. Adding a finger-sized indentation or something like that to aid in removing it would be beneficial. Currently, I find myself kind of prying it up by the front tip to release it from the tray, hope this doesn’t hurt it in the long run. Overall, I really like this keyboard/pen, just think it could be a little easier to remove it from the storage tray.

The keyboard is pretty light, and the fabric on the exterior side is nice. It makes the device seem less cold/icy and blends in or even complements furnishings, but the interior not so much. I believe it has a different texture than the outside (inside was less soft, a little more plastic-y, perhaps as a deterrent to sweat staining or something). The keyboard is advertised as ‘Covered with luxurious Alcantara material’, but for some reason the interior reminded me of a cardboard egg carton, particularly around the raised edges surrounding the keys.The key colors look a little plain.The magnets/connection points are secure and they won't detach unless you want them to (ask me how I know - the tablet’s kickstand slid off a small side table but I caught the keyboard and the magnet connection prevented it from falling.)PEN:Being able to have the Slim Pen 2 stored on the keyboard and charged is one of the best things about this keyboard. This is my first time using a pen to edit photos so I can’t make too much of a comment about it, but overall it felt much better than using a mouse or touchpad. The eraser on the end is a nice touch in addition to the clickable button. Handwriting recognition is also pretty good, when the words are written clearly. One thing to note - the pen’s pinned apps are limited to 4 programs of your choice at a time which felt like that could be a little frustrating. The pen is also light, almost like a plastic toy, but once the haptics start, it feels more like a real tool.I appreciated the staff paper in the journal app which would be perfect for musicians who can use it to compose or jot down musical ideas.OTHER THOUGHTS:One disadvantage for me was the folding upper section of the keyboard where the Slim Pen 2 is stored - trying to move the tablet+keyboard combo one handed around felt a little scary and messy since the folding section where the Slim Pen is stored can pop open and cause the keyboard to flap around in the air.In the end, without a keyboard, the Surface Pro’s full potential is limited for sure, but I did find myself checking to see what the other keyboard alternatives were.

I've only personally tested them with the new Surface Pro 11th edition.The Pro keyboard still uses the suede/microfiber-feeling material known as Alcantara. If you've used one of these keyboards before you should be familiar with the pros and cons. It feels premium and comfortable to touch but the material will wear over time. I don't expect any different from this keyboard.The Pro keyboard is powered by the Surface Pro itself, which it magnetically connects to, so you never have to worry about charging it as you would with Bluetooth keyboards. It will always be ready to use. The keyboard is also backlit despite its very thin profile, and you have the option to turn it off. I found typing decent with the Surface Pro keyboard but it will bother users who expect more key travel. There's just no way around it with a device as thin as this is.There is now a CoPilot key located on the right side of the keyboard where the Context menu key used to be on older keyboards. Unfortunately I haven't used it much because CoPilot hasn't been practically useful to me since it makes a lot of errors for my particular use case. But your mileage may vary. Microsoft is betting on AI and that's where the computing market is general is heading, so if they don't abandon it like Cortana (which arguably evolved to CoPilot anyway) maybe it will grow to be useful and I can be glad the dedicated key exists. There's no native way to remap the keys, but you probably can using third party software.The touchpad is large enough and glass, which feels great, but it doesn't have haptic feedback because there isn't the motor for it. That's reserved for the more expensive Flex keyboard model.There is a pen storage well placed above the keys and now left exposed for easy access to the Slim Pen 2 whenever you need it. Not only does it hold the Slim Pen 2 magnetically, it charges it as well.The Slim Pen 2 has a flat design, which I'm not the biggest fan of. Through online research, I found out this design is that of a carpenter's pencil. The thing is, one wouldn't use a carpenter's pencil to write or draw if they had the choice. So it seems like they chose this design so it's flat enough to conceal within the type cover. I can get used to it, but it's not my preference. I also found the button a bit hard to press, but that can be a good thing because I won't accidentally press it while I'm using the pen.Pressure sensitivity is nice but I'm not an artist nor do I draw. I don't know how to elaborate in a meaningful way for artists that would use the Slim Pen 2 to draw unfortunately. But it does ink at variable thickness based on the amount of pressure you use while writing/drawing with it.The top end of the pen serves as a digital eraser, which is nice and feels intuitive.The cool thing about the Slim Pen 2 is its haptic feedback. Previously people would suggest using a textured screen protector to simulate the pen on paper feel, but I never liked how those change the look of the screen just for the sake of that. With the haptic feedback, the pen feels like there's friction while writing/drawing with it, which just enhances the user experience.I can comfortably recommend it to Surface Pro users who type on-the-go, and have a need to use the pen a lot. But as a reminder, if that doesn't fit your profile, you don't HAVE TO spend that much. If you don't see yourself using the pen much or at all, don't get this. Get the cheaper model with just the keyboard. If you use the Surface Pro as a tablet most of the time and don't see yourself using a physical keyboard, or more comfortable using a bluetooth keyboard with better key travel. Otherwise the Surface Pro keyboard with Surface Slim Pen was made for the Surface Pro, especially the 11th edition. Literally.

There are two buttons on the pen which function similar to mouse buttons and also allow pairing the pen via Bluetooth with other devices. The pen tips last a good while and are replaceable if or when they wear down. The tip doesn’t seem harsh on the Surface Pro glass, which is good because I’m having a hard time finding quality paper style protectors like I use on my other tablet. The pen charges wirelessly via the cavity on the Surface keyboard but does not have a dedicated charger.Overall, the Surface slim pen and keyboard cover are indispensable if using the Surface as a true 2-in-1. They don’t add much bulk or weight and work seamlessly with the Surface. The cover also helps keep the Surface screen protected when not in use. The keyboard is also available in matching colors for the Surface. The pen however only comes in black.

The top row of keys defaults to the device controls such as brightness, volume, mute, keyboard backlight, et cetera; but pressing the Fn key makes the row act as function keys - and they continue to act that way unless you press the Fn key again to switch back. There's a little light on the key to indicate which one is currently active, although if you aren't actively typing the light will turn off after a bit and then it can get a bit confusing.The trackpad is rather small, it seems as though there's some space they could still make use of to increase the size at least a bit. It functions well, though. Pretty hefty click, a bit odd feeling but not an issue.As for the pen, I can't say too much about it as I'm planning to use it to take notes for the upcoming semester and haven't had much time to use it, but I do have a bit to say. It feels alright in the hand, the weird oval shape doesn't feel super great but it's fine. Haptics are an interesting feature, unless you're an artist (honestly maybe even then) it's a bit gimmicky, although pretty cool. Buttons function great. One complaint I have is that there's a sticker with all the regulatory info on the side, and when holding the pen the edge of the sticker makes my hand itch. Can easily be removed, but it shouldn't have to be.The alcantera material feels pretty good, but I am a bit worried about if it'll start to "fray" or something after using it for awhile, and how quickly it'll get dirty. So far so good but it hasn't been that long.
