I relied on Milwaukee for a new utility knife as the Fastback Folding Utility Knife(48-22-1500) has been my all time favorite knife to use ever since it was released, it worked well for the job until I lost it. I looked into the self retracting model as this time I would be dealing with a lot of of boxes ,opening/cutting along with pallet film wrap and those pallet straps.I really like the ease of access to replace the blade(no need for a screwdriver like other knifes out there) you just unscrew the middle part and it opens, giving you access to change the blade and continue with the job. As for grip design, I wish it had the overmold grip like the Side Sliding model(48-22-1510) and the blade angle of the Fixed Blade model(48-22-1513). The blade extend a good amount to where it will make a good cut, feels very sturdy in hand and doesn't rattle like other self retracting knifes, maybe it has to do with me filling the blade compartment to the max. As for the sliding part I did notice that my thumb has gotten a cramp after opening a lot of boxes , maybe they can have a model where the sliding mechanism is on the side of the knife instead of the top(but that's just me) It has been dropped from about 4 feet and I dont worry about it opening letting all the blades fall out although the middle screw does come lose but you just have to tighten it . I look forward to Milwaukee improving this knife as I think consumers can benefit from it. Hopefully they do because I'd would be willing to buy it.

I found this knife because I was looking specifically for one with a tool-less access for blade changes. I had one with this feature through art school and beyond and I was absolutely in love with it. I think it's still in my possession somewhere but I haven't seen it in a while and wanted to have a couple anyway: one for the tool tote, one for the junk drawer, etc. This knife has a great fit for your hand with the way it's shaped. It doesn't feel cheap. I actually wouldn't mind if it had a little more heft to it, but that is 100% a personal weirdo preference and doesn't actually come with any tangible benefits that I can think of. The blade is rounded (safety!) and of course it retracts automatically (more safety!!!). That might not have worked for me in my art ... MoreI found this knife because I was looking specifically for one with a tool-less access for blade changes. That might not have worked for me in my art school days when I needed to make nice sharp cuts with a pointy blade, but it's great for my current needs of opening boxes and whatnot. In summation, I am VERY HAPPY with this purchase! I bought two and I might buy a third!

This knife is for the glue eaters in your elementary school. After so many adults cut their hand to the point of needing stitches because of their low brain activity, the good tools get banned in the workplace. That’s where this knife comes in to play. It’s an alright knife if you don’t have other choices. I have the fast back too and it’s by far the best utility blade available to humans. This thing beats the safety blades my job supplies but doesn’t even come close to the greatness of the fastback. Some people suck. Don’t be that guy.

I do a lot of recycling and this knife is absolutely perfect for cutting up cardboard. See the two pictures below one with a knife retracted and one with the blade extended. The spring loaded blade is very easy to push with your thumb and retracts quickly and safely once you release it.It is great for recycling and would probably work great on sheet rock as well.I like the fact that the blade retracts because then you don’t have to worry about inadvertent slicing of material or body parts :-)
Milwaukee Self-Retracting Utility KnifeThe Milwaukee Self-Retracting Utility Knife is a great knife to have around in the garage for use of cutting up cardboard or like materials for the recycling bin, or for keeping in the kitchen to open packages. The awesome feature is the safety feature of the self retracting blade. In order to use the knife, you extend the lever forward which exposes the blade. When you release it, whether outright or controlled, the blade automatically retracts into the knife blade. The housing has a lanyard hole for a chord attachment. The knife comes with a limited lifetime warranty. The knife is made in China.I'm very satisfied with Milwaukee Tools and their knives. They are very well made, and work flawlessly.I rate this knife 5*s out of 5.Thank you Milwaukee Tools for allowing me to try your product.Thank you Home Depot Seeds for offering this item.
Sharp, sturdy, utility knife with self-retracting safety built in. We do not worry about breaking the blade of this knife by dropping it, or having it get into little hands, since the blade retracts as soon as you take your thumb off of it. We use utility knives to break down boxes for recycling, and this one does a good job. In addition, it has a second, shallower, depth setting for the blade placement, using the second notch of the blade, which allows us to open boxes without cutting deeply (see photos). The screw that holds the knife together is made so that it cannot fall out, which we appreciate. The first time we opened up the knife, we had to use pliers to turn the screw (placing a paper towel over the screw head to protect it from the metal of the pliers). ... MoreSharp, sturdy, utility knife with self-retracting safety built in. The screw that holds the knife together is made so that it cannot fall out, which we appreciate. The first time we opened up the knife, we had to use pliers to turn the screw (placing a paper towel over the screw head to protect it from the metal of the pliers). But after that first time, the screw turned by hand. Extra blades can be stored inside the handle of the knife. This is a nicely designed, well made, safe, utility knife.
The construction of this utility knife is very good. The case, button, sliding tray, spring and even the thumb screw that holes the two halves together are all metal. The blade will only stay extended while you keep the button slid forward. Once you let go of the button the spring pulls the blade back in the handle for safety. This is a good idea and can help prevent cuts. The blades are easy to change. No tools needed. The screw can be removed with fingers. Right out of the package the screw was very tight but since then it's been easy to access.
The self-retracting feature might be good in some situations, I can see it as being an advantage for safety reasons, or perhaps when allowing a child to use it, but frankly I don't like it. I expected a detent or similar feature that would hold the blade locked out but no, you must hold the blade out with your thumb on the blade slide control. Other than that complaint; it is well made, a plastic body, so nice and light. It has a lanyard or hanging hole. Despite my complain I will keep it handy and use it as a box cutter. The package stays it stores 5 blades, and it does, but it also comes with the five blades included, the package does not make that clear.
This is my go to apron knife. I like it for a lot of reasons. Mostly because I can't forget to close it before quickly shoving it back in my pocket. It does require a bit of getting used to, but for opening boxes and cutting cardboard, it works great. I also really like the 2 blade positions to limit the depth of cut.The knife is comfortable for me to use and I am left handed. It's easy to store and change blades as well. It's all metal and pretty tough. I'd definitely buy another one of these ASAP if I lost it
This retractable utility knife by Milwaukee is the best! It has a solid feel to it, the surface is matted to aid the grip, and it feels good in hand. The blade will only come out when you slide the button conveniently located at the top of the knife and will retract when you let go. It does take some getting used to, at times you’d use your thumb or your index finger to push the slider, but it’s doable. Still the best utility knife I’ve ever had.The retractable blade is a great safety feature because you sure don't want the blade sticking out when you carry this knife around with you. It has lanyard opening at the other end, so I just carry it with me and easily use when needed. Just used it to turn a cardboard box inside out to return an item I had purchased online. The Milwaukee utility knife is holding up just fine and will no doubt last a long time. It even stores 5 spare blades for the added convenience and flexibility of use. What can I say, it's Milwaukee! Another awesome tool by this brand. I own a few Milwaukee tools, have a high confidence in this brand and this utility knife won't disappoint. It’s a must have in a toolbox. Highly recommended.
