It fits perfect in your hands and just feels right.. The only problem I found is now I'm walking around looking for reasons to use my Fastback. The blade change is a serious breakthrough in box cutter technology and the clip on the side is very strong. If you work in shipping you are truly missing out if you don't own this. I recommend this to everyone because even if you don't work with box cutters daily, you WILL need this. For the price you can't afford not to buy this one....

The latch secures the blade in the open or closed position. The left side of the blade holder is provided with a notch to cooperate with the hook on a tape measure to allow for accurate scoring of material. Operation of the latch release is easily accomplished with one’s thumb allowing for one handed opening and use. Once the release button is depressed, a flick of the wrist will open the blade to the full-open position. While this is convenient (when the other hand is busy holding the material to be cut) it may result in the knife being considered a “gravity” knife, in some jurisdictions. A formed wire belt-clip is provided that should stand up to the rigors of on-the-job use. It actually may be a little too robust if one is in the habit of clipping their knife to their pocket rather than their belt. With an overall (opened) length of 6 ¼ inches and a folded length of 4 inches it does not take up too much space in one’s pocket, yet, due to the comfortably configured handle, allows for a solid grip when cutting or scoring. A metal loop is provided for attaching a lanyard, especially convenient if working aloft. A welcome addition to the tool bag.

Dangerous and Fussy little utility knife.
13 April 2024

The knife arrived ahead of schedule, and in perfect condition, but the design creates some problems with usability. The blade was very dull due to dragging across burrs inside the poorly finished blade channel of the metal frame / handle. Opening and closing is very difficult, and creates a severe risk of cutting oneself. I cured some of this with very careful filing and finishing. It is now better. The latching system is part of the frame / handle, and is not made of a stainless steel with enough spring memory to tolerate the adjustments necessary to make the latching / unlatching safe. Once I realized it was not going to be generally useful, I gave up on improving the handle, and tossed the knife into a seldom used "go bag" under one of the car seats.

Great knife, but not all brands of blades lock in
4 March 2021

I love this knife, had it for over a year and keep one clipped in my pocket at all times. Around the farm it is fantastic and in the workshop it's so useful. To start with I love the side-clip, it is the perfect amount of tension to clip onto my pants' pocket without either falling out or being too hard to pull out when I need it (even with winter gloves on). The hinge allows a nice wrist flick to open and lock the knife every time. The handle fits my large hands easily and provides a safe and steady grasp when cutting. The bead-blasted surface leaves a nice grip even when your hands are wet. The lock mechanism works easily to lock and with a quick press of my thumb I get it unlocked. My only con for this knife is that some brands of razor blades don't quite fit ... MoreI love this knife, had it for over a year and keep one clipped in my pocket at all times. The lock mechanism works easily to lock and with a quick press of my thumb I get it unlocked. My only con for this knife is that some brands of razor blades don't quite fit (thickness wise) and unfortunately Milwaukee chose to use a spring friction fit rather than the slots at the top of the blade to lock the blade into the knife. So one of the brands Home Depot sells won't stay in reliably as it a few tenths too thin. But that's easy enough to fix either by adding something on top of the blade or just buy the Milwaukee brand replacement blades which are the right thickness. But in general you won't go wrong with this knife. Oh, and put your name on it in sharpie since all your buds will have the exact same knife! (one day I noticed I had spilled paint on my knife (except I hadn't painted) and realized it was neighbor's...)

Great little brother to the bigger ones!
23 May 2024

This was the first MKE utility knife I ever bought back in 2020. Back then I didn't have an extreme need for it beyond cutting cardboard on the job and minor things here and there. It was the cheaper option at the time and I just decided to roll with it for then. It was a great first box cutter. I gave it 4 stars bc it lacks some of the features that bigger ones have like blade storage, and the bigger ones fit my hands much better, and suit my uses more these days.

Inefficient Design
19 August 2023

There is no way to store replacement blades. The spring pocket retainer is outrageously stiff and virtually unusable. There is no way of adjusting blade protrusion needed for more precise cutting, as with conventional knives of this type. $9.00 is a ridiculously high price for this underperformer. This product is not that much smaller nor more convenient to carry around than a conventional box cutter knife of this type. Milwaukee has a disappointment here.

The Milwaukee model 48-22-1500 "fastback" utility knife uses the usual utility knife blades; one blade comes with the knife, but there are no spares included. You'll want to grab a pack of spares if you don't already have some in your toolbox. The knife blade folds into the handle, much like a pocketknife, and there's even a wire clip to keep the blade within easy reach when it's in your pocket. There's a push button release that allows the blade to swing out of the handle and once the blade is locked in place the button must be pushed again to fold the knife up. I've found that, in practice, the blade locks well and there doesn't appear to be much chance that the blade will unexpectedly close (YMMV).There's a small release button for changing the blade (see ... MoreThe Milwaukee model 48-22-1500 "fastback" utility knife uses the usual utility knife blades; one blade comes with the knife, but there are no spares included. Blade changes are fast and tool free.I use the 1500 mostly for breaking down cardboard boxes, cutting twine and shipping tape, and not so much for scoring linoleum, etc. Our recycling bin (one of those big jobs on wheels) is outside, so when I'm cutting up boxes out there this has become my 'go to' knife. I have one of the Milwaukee "sliding" blade utility knives and like it very much, but this folding model takes up less room in my jeans pocket. Unlike the Milwaukee sliding blade knife, there's no on-board storage for spare blades with the folding model. The knife offers a comfortable grip and I've had no problems using it outdoors with cotton work gloves. I haven't tried it yet with heavy winter gloves. The knife works as advertised, fit and finish are good, the price is competitive, and it saves wear and tear on my pocketknife - what's not to like? Milwaukee offers a lifetime warranty on the knife and Home Depot has their 90-day return policy as well.HTHRegards,Jim

This Milwaukee fastback compact folding utility knife is interesting. It is like the other fastback utility knives except it is compact and lightweight. It has a metal frame but with plastic grips for durability and light weight, a clip for your belt or pocket, and flips open and closed easily and has a quick change blade feature as well as a lanyard hole in case you require one. The fir and finish and material quality seems decent. The only issue I have with it is that, being compact, the handle is small. I have an average-sized hand, but certainly not a large hand like many guys who might use this knife. I can "choke up" on the handle and hold my index finger near the blade, but it feels wildly unsafe to hold it that way and there is no pronounced recessed finger groove to keep my finger away from the very sharp blade. For that reason I consider this a light duty utility knife for non-continuous use.

The small size of this knife puts the release button in the way of the grip and it takes very little pressure to release the blade. In addition, this is the blind side of the knife which often strikes the cardboard, etc that is being cut. What results...is that in the middle of the cut, the blade releases...and disappears. This happens A LOT. It might take 3 blades to cut up one box. This is in spite of knowing that the release button is a delicate mechanism and an effort is needed to stay away from it.A utility knife should be much more reliable that this...a blade should last until it is dull. It should not take 3 blades to make one cut on a cardboard box...It is unacceptable to have to carry around a case of 50 replacement blades to ensure that you have enough blades to get though an hours worth of work. For this reason this knife is going into the pile "of broken toys".I would recommend that any utility knife of any quality would be a better choice that this knife until significant upgrades are made.
