Amazing idea which falls flat on its face

You can only output audio which has been piped through Alexa. In case this isn’t obvious, because it wasn’t at all, to me, this means that you can **only** play radio stations/music streaming services which are capable of interacting with Alexa. This leads to the next problem… 2b. You have to download Alexa onto a phone-like device in order to integrate Alexa into the Orbi, i.e. you have to download Alexa onto your phone to use the speaker: The entire point of buying this device. 2b. Privacy. Having 4 far-field mics which can only be “turned-off” with a capacitive touch on the top of the Orbi voice, and whose staying on means Amazon potentially has a front seat view into your entire life, is a violation of privacy. As much as we all would love for Amazon, and every brilliant and successful corporation out there to have our best interests at heart, they don’t. We cannot guarantee the integrity of the communications with respect to Alexa and those microphones. Not to mention that your Amazon account is then directly linked to the Orbi, so, everything you say in your home and every bit of data you transmit can potentially be sent to Amazon and neatly categorized under your account. [Another boring privacy rant]. 2c. Quality and user experience were deeply sacrificed for the sake of embedding Alexa into this device. It’s really unfortunate, because Harmon makes quality products, and the price was great. Netgear makes great products, as well, but this was a gimmick, at best. Solutions: 1. Add the most current version of Bluetooth (5.x at the moment). 2. Integrate the ability for Apple Airplay 2. 3. Remove all smart-assistants and either 3a. Make them an optional firmware download. 3b. Make separate physical devices available which contain either Alexa or Google assistant or whatever. I don’t want either of those anywhere near my wifi. Advice: 1. The top of the Orbi Voice should consist of actual buttons, and, if we are really at the point in time where physical buttons are proletarian, then at least provide some haptic feedback for when those capacitive buttons are touched. 2. The glossy, white plastic does not pair well with the fabric. It looks forced. Perhaps look into a silicone-type material such as those used by Google’s home products. Final: I was really excited, and now I’m sad. I never write reviews, so, maybe this provided you with some insight.

I had to contact Netgear support to walk me through the process of adding a satellite to the network. In the end, all is working. Again, the product itself is great. I do highly recommend it. I prefer to work with the router software via a computer browser. There are more granular controls in the browser interface, over the Orbi app. However, I have to give it a 4 star rating, because of the lack of instructions.

Great for small business
19 January 2022

This mesh system is great for a small business or a home if you are comfortable with networking. It was support for separate networks, VLANs, and SSIDs. It has great coverage and the components are much smaller than previous Orbi routers which makes them a lot easier to install and fit into cabinets. I am able to keep my office devices separate from our security cameras, and with VPN support built-in it is easy to access the information remotely. It has great coverage our office is about 2500 sqft and we have great signal all around. Netgear mobile app is not the best but it is handy to troubleshoot issues when a computer is not nearby. I strongly recommend it, especially when on sale. I bought another set for my house and is much better than our previous Orbi.

I bought this system to provide wifi for our small church. We have roughly 5000 sq. ft. of space, so I purchased the 2 satellite version, but one may have been enough. I was getting pretty good coverage before plugging in the second unit. Setup is not complicated, but it is helpful to read the instructions to understand how the system is designed. The units all look the same. The router is identifiable only by the stickers on it. Each unit has its own set of LAN ports. By default, it comes with profiles for each of the 4 SSIDs that indicate how each might be used: Administration, employee devices, Internet of Things (IOT), and guest. The guest setup assumes you will want to obtain and agreement for terms of use before proceeding. The network shows as unsecured. The guest setup assumes you will want to obtain and agreement for terms of use before proceeding. The network shows as unsecured. The password you set it taken as part of the agreement process. There does not seem to be a way to change this behavior, but it may be that I missed it. The Virtual LAN (VLAN) profiles can be changed for each SSID, and that determines the level of access each client has and whether it can see other clients on the network. Since I did not want to use the agreement process at this time and we don't really need a separate employee network, I applied the guest profile to the employee SSID to create the standard wifi password connection I was looking for. The routers interface is easy enough to use, but one should be aware that when configuring the wifi profiles changes must be applied before leaving the tab for that network, and the process of saving the changes seems to take much longer than it should, apparently due to the way that the router shares it's configuration with the satellites. The router does have features for virtual DNS and remote management if desired, as well as facility for creating a DMZ for Internet facing servers. We have not yet put any real stress on the network, but throughput seems to be good. I may need to update this after we've had more time with it, but so far it seems like a solid system. I will be considering a Netgear product the next time I need a new router for my home.

I've been putting off getting a mesh system for a while. But flaky internet in spaces like my garage (where I added an Aladdin wifi capable opener and an alexa for music) and in my bedroom led me to finally try it. Wow, Alexa enabled lights that were unreliable (and just a few feet away from a T-link router) my Simplisafe webcam (again, just a few feet away from the router) that were super flaky before just started working. I have an alexa light switch that every other day would lose connection. No more. Same thing with the garage door opener. It would take sometimes as long as 20 seconds to respond to an open or close request...so long that I hardly ever used alexa or the app to operate it. Now, its instantaneous, even with alexa. Major signal stability issues
30 August 2020

Purchased and set up the Orbi mesh system in August 2020 based on good reviews and Netgear's good reputation. Soon after setup, I started noticing internet disconnects and major slowdowns on a fairly regular basis. At first, I thought it was my actual internet service but ruled that out after troubleshooting. The router itself was inexplicably disconnecting from the internet, sometimes as often as once per hour. Since I work from home, this was absolutely unacceptable. After exploring Netgear's online forums, I discovered that this is a fairly common problem that hasn't been satisfactorily addressed for several years. After exploring Netgear's online forums, I discovered that this is a fairly common problem that hasn't been satisfactorily addressed for several years. I did try all the suggestions on those forums, but nothing helped. One particular article suggested reducing the power output for the wifi bands because the system is actually very powerful and the signals from the satellites and base can conflict with each other (this is a very powerful system, so it is somewhat plausible). I tried this as well and even went so far as to completely shut down the satellites to isolate the base. Within a couple hours, it had dropped the internet signal again, and that is when I took the whole system down and returned it. Since turning my old Asus router back on, I've had zero issues, which is the final proof that the issue lies with the Orbi. In summary, I would advise staying away from this product. Furthermore, I suggest analyzing whether you actually need a mesh system or if a very powerful router will do the trick. In the process of troubleshooting all this, I discovered that I probably don't need a mesh system despite having a large (5000 sqft) house. The base of the Orbi covered that by itself without the satellites, so I'm just going to get a more powerful single router and see if that does the trick.

Wi-Fi performance (read speed) which should be more than good throughout my house. 4. Non messy Wi-Fi solution. 5. Scalable solution for future expansion as and when needed. Wi-Fi performance (read speed) which should be more than good throughout my house. 4. Non messy Wi-Fi solution. 5. Scalable solution for future expansion as and when needed. Guess what OBRI RBK50 Mesh Solution clicks all the above points. Prior to using Netgear ORBI, I had purchased Asus GT2900 high end wireless router which claimed very lager coverage but unfortunately that was not the case and the claimed Wi-Fi coverage was only when the router was placed in open area. The penetrative power of Wi-Fi signals was pretty low inspite of 4 external antennas. I had to return the router after 3 days of testing as it was not giving the required performance. Next I started searching for Wi-Fi solution which will cover the above mentioned points and after comparing multiple Wi-Fi solutions from Linksys to TP Link and Asus's own Mesh Wi-Fi solution I finally opted for Netgear ORBI Mesh solution. I have purchased 1 1 (one router and one satellite) to ensure the required Wi-Fi coverage. Its been a week I am using the Wi-Fi system and I am very much pleased with performance. My house has thick walls and the three bedrooms are located in 3 corners of the house. Due to constrains the main router can be place only in one of the corner room and the satellite part of the system placed in another bedroom. Inspite of this the backend connection between the router and satellite is very strong (shows as GOOD in Orbi App) thanks to additional dedicated band for back haul link. I have 100Mbps fiber connection and from any room I get 85 to 95Mbps consistent speed although I have 19 devices (6 laptops /mac, 4 Smart TV, 8 Smart Phones, multiple IoT devices, couple of outdoor security camera etc) connected to the Wi-Fi network at any given point of time. Apart from this there is decent Wi-Fi coverage on my terrace above but the signal struggles in parking area. So overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase and would recommend this product to anyone who need robust Mesh Wi-Fi solution for their home or office. Some Drawbacks 1. ORBI app yo manage the devices is very basic and need improvements in multiple areas. 2. There are different models of Mesh Wi-Fi systems available from Netgear and none of these would work seamlessly with each other (for eg. RBK10 won't work seamlessly with RBK 50) and there are limitations like no single SSID, no direct Wi-Fi connectivity to main router etc. So anyone buying this solution should avoid having 2 different Mesh systems (although I did figure some work around to this using wired connection). 3. ORBI system comes with Bitdefender Anti Virus Ani Malware software built-in the device and can protect devices connected to the network. But the drawback is the system is free for one month after which wr have to pay around 5K per year for Bitdefender services. But by paying 4K we can have all our mobile and laptops covered with bitdefender solution without paying additional charges for each of them. 4. The parental control system via

Outstanding mesh, ok speaker
27 May 2020

There’s a reason the Orbi is at the top of all reviewers speed tests...it’s because it truly is fast! I utilize the wireless backhaul with the router and Orbi Voice satellite ~60ft apart, and I get consistent 300Mbps speeds throughout my entire 2400 sq ft home. Many areas are 400+, with some at 500+ (e.g., within 15ft of the router _or_ satellite). My garage was a dead zone with my previous single R7000 router (which in its own right was and still is a very good router), now I get 300Mbps. Close to zero in my backyard from my faraday cage of a home previously, I now get 200 to 300 easy. As a cute additional feature, the satellite is an Alexa speaker. Bass is like tapping ... MoreThere’s a reason the Orbi is at the top of all reviewers speed tests...it’s because it truly is fast! To my semi-audiophile ear, the speaker is very muddy. Highs are unclear and voices are muffled. Bass is like tapping a hollow tissue box. The thing is it feels like the speaker is _capable_ of sounding really good, but the EQ controls only give treble and bass and really don’t affect the sound much. The controls in the Alexa app tease you into thinking you can adjust the treble, mid, and bass of the Orbi Voice, but modifying those settings yields zero difference. Also disappointing is the fact that as of this writing, you can’t use the speaker as part of Amazon’s multi-room music feature. However, if you think of the speaker as a large echo dot that can tell you the weather or read you the news, with the amazing side effect of carrying your Wi-Fi signal well beyond your dreams, then the speaker is great! A plus about the speaker is that it looks really good, thus makes it easy to leave it out in a more conspicuous place, where it can be heard, but more importantly where better Wi-Fi signals can be sent/received. Another thing I like about the Orbi system is most of the simple setup and configuration is done in the app, but there is the option to configure more advanced options in the web GUI (e.g., assigning static IP addresses to devices, setup port forwarding). The Circle and Armor add ons are nice perks. Circle will be essential as the kids get older for jailing of their privileges if they have chosen to forgo parental law. I didn’t buy this set for the speaker, I bought it for the mesh and this set was $200 great Black Friday deal... $80 cheaper than the typical 2-pack Orbi RB50K. If you need 4 vs 2 LAN ports on the satellite, or 5000 sq ft vs 4500 sq ft of coverage, or have more devices than me streaming at same time and need the 1.7Gb backhaul vs 866Mb, then you need the RB50K. I will enjoy my excellent mesh For the foreseeable future and wait for Wi-Fi 6 mesh systems to come down in price (currently $500 more for Orbi Wi-Fi 6 mesh...Ouch).

Random loose screw inside
18 February 2023

The satellite I received has a loose screw inside. It rattles around and you can see it through the bottom vents. The satellite connected fine, and there do not seem to be any issues with it. Because of that and I cannot hear or see any other parts loose inside, I think it must be an extra screw that somehow made it’s way in during assembly, and not a necessary screw that has come loose. Of course, I can’t be sure. I opted to avoid the hassle of returning it, and hope I don’t have a problem to surface in the future. I emailed this with a pic to customer support and did not receive a response.
