After much study and agonizing over what to buy to replace my aging Apple Airport wi-fi router I decided on the Orbi AX6000, router only, no satellites. Partly because I like the looks (some other routers would scare small children and wives 😀) and partly because my daughter is happy with her Netgear router at home (she is IT Director of a nearby company). My house is 2000sq ft and I am pleased that the Orbi gives me a strong signal throughout the house. No need for a satellite mesh for my situation. Setup went pretty smoothly, the only small glitch was that I thought I had changed the password to access the Orbi network, but it didn’t get changed. Probably something I failed to do. Got that resolved on my own without a great deal of difficulty. Using the app is mostly for initial setup but you will need to access the web interface for customized setting such as changing the Subnet (if desired), IP reservations, port configurations and wifi broadcast options. The interface is a little slower to respond then my previous Netgear R6300.I used ethernet backhaul since I was already setup to do so but it also worked fine using wireless backhaul. I have a 3 story 2400sqf. house and signals are good in most portions of the house and don't have any issues with throughput. The only issue I have is with the Bryant Thermostat that I have not been able to get connected to the wifi. I have seen online where others have had this same issue so I believe it to be more of an issue with the device than the Orbi since I also had some problems over the last few months on my R6300.Ok, now for my only real complaint. At over $1K I think there should be built-in fine grained firewall options for parental and device controls without having to pay for a subscription based app that is lacking in configuration options. I find this to be just a money grab for continued revenue steam. I have a couple of internal services I run that use port forwarding and with all the port scanners out on the internet they obviously hit and get sent into the device. Thankfully they are secure connections which get rejected but would like to have the ability to block inbound IP's before they even hit my devices or have a list of approved IP's for the service. There are no options for that so you have to relay one the Orbi's "PAID" Security Interface. If it does find an attack, it merely states an attack was found an blocked but only shows you the IP and no info on what kind of attack it was.Overall I am pleased with the Orbi RBR960 and would recommend it. I am taking one star away due to the lack of built-in controls at this price point.

Easy setup with superb performance
3 March 2023

Installing this system is a snap and was enjoying speeds of 500mbps up/down within 15 min of opening the box. The Orbi app provides easy management of your network settings. It’s security service is great, automatically scanning every device that hits the network, but it is an expensive service. Finally, the hardware is second to none. Each device can be hidden from view in a cabinet without sacrificing performance, which is great because the devices are quite large. The system is expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Great Coverage, Solid Router Setup Was Tricky

I have used the Amplifi Alien router and that is less expensive and seems to work just as well, with a much easier to use app. Also, for the price while it has a 10 gbs incoming connection the outgoing ethernet ports should probably be at lease 2.5 gbs.Am I satisfied, yes, it works well in my situation, but the setup with the app could be much better.

Meets my expectations
28 February 2023

My previous Orbi was getting quite old. I wanted better speed and coverage. This isn't the current top of the line with Netgear but it is what Netgear recommended for my conditions and considerably cheaper. I have a 1400 square foot home with a finished basement. The router gave me very good coverage everywhere in my home on it's own. 600 to 800mps average. One satellite extended good coverage with average of 600mps coverage to my patio and at least 50' into my backyard. I only got about 40mps in my outbuilding 35' behind the house which I believe is because of it's aluminum backed insulation board. I was concerned the signal was to weak to sync the other satellite. I have 7 items wired to the main router. 4 directly and 3 through a splitter and about 6 items regularly using wireless. All the speeds listed were wireless using my Iphone to run the speed tests. I have 1G service. I am quite satisfied with this purchase. Plus I got 15% of the purchase price back by recycling my old Orbi through Best Buy!

The 860 series is a beast! My condo is all concrete and cinder block walls. I originally had a RBK53. I added some new devices over the past month and the RBK53 couldn't keep up. I thought I'd save some money and try two units instead of three. Great decision! The 860 2-pack completely blew away my expectations. I get 800-900 Megs down throughout the unit. The RBK53 was only giving me 200 max on a good day. My service is 1G. I'm sure I could write forever about this.

Super Fast Wi-Fi
17 June 2023

This is an excellent and fast router but the automation does have a downfall. The auto-assignment of which band a device is connected to, makes it very difficult to connect a system like Sonos. Sonos needs all speakers and devices on the same band in order for them to work together. The Orbi will assign the band IT thinks is the best and it will probably be on different bands so the system won’t see the different components and won’t work. And there is no way to manually alter the assignment that I could find. Unless you are very skilled in IT and router set-up, think twice about an Orbi system.

Works Well, Support Poor
14 December 2022

Installed ok and to be fair it does run well. Speed and coverage is very good.However. Netgear charge for technical support after 3 months. So, my case after an automatic firmware update it stopped working every 24 hours. It's to do with IP license renewal which should be automatic and invisible to the user and just happens in the background of every system. Netgear didn't want to know unless I paid an expensive subscription. They wouldn't be able to fix it anyway. Further firmware update made it worse.Bottom line is their tech support is expensive and patchy.

not compatible with RBS850 satellite
18 December 2022

This router was a huge fail. It is NOT compatible with the RBS850 satellite as advertised on the Netgear website. The satellite will appear to sync (solid blue light), but does not show up in the Orbi app or the web admin panel. Other issues: WiFi printers and Sonos devices are not recognized on the network. WiFi signal also intermittently drops.Summary: BRICKEDOutcome: returned it and replaced with the RBR850, which works flawlessly (none of the above issues)
