Excellent, solid, professional lens

This is an extreme wide angle (when used on full frame) and a wide angle on cropped sensor. The lens is of really high quality, solid, metal. It can be used for "proper" manual focus (e.g, on a non-Nikon digital camera) with a nicely damped proper focusing ring (the AF is fine too). Overall, a stunning lens. Some examples of what this lens can do with its super-wide field of view.

Bought the lens just before a trip to the Bolivian Salt Flats and then the Amazon River. Amazing lens for landscape shots and perspective shots. Extremely sharp. Allows for increased creativity. Depth of field is amazing. Great for putting either a person or object of interest super up close and personal with a beautiful landscape background, with both being in perfect focus.

I have always enjoyed using very wide lenses in conventional photography and 3D. For several years I have been using a Korean 8mm DX fisheye but it didn't always do the job. This lens works well on both my film cameras and DSLRs. This lens is large but still fits in my camera case. So far the weakest point is the "sock" that protects the front elements. It is a little awkward to use. A better designed lens cap is not impossible. The ability to use filters is very limited to a gel slot at the rear of the lens. Brand new this lens is very expensive (for my budget).

Good Price & quality for used Nikon 14mm
18 March 2014

Just got the lens. Product arrived well packed from Adorama and even though shipment was by the cheapest method, I got the lens in plenty of time. Lens quality was rated at N and it seemed almost spotless and fully functional. The glass was clean. So very happy with the description and quality. It came with lens caps but no manual or original box. Got the manual off Nikon website. I discovered later that it was a used Gray Market lens (maybe missed it in the details of the ad) Overall would recommend buying from Adorama for used lens and their rating system. If I got the original box and manual, I would have given it a high 5 instead of a low 5, but the system does not allow me to get that granular or split hairs. Not sure yet if it will be super sharp but the first picture looked good.

Hate not givign it 5 stars.

I hate to not give this lens 5 stars but it doesn't earn all 5. If i could give it a 4.5 i would but alas i can't.I bought this lens to replace my 28 f1.8 on my infrared DX camera (hot spot issues). I wanted this lens because it is a super wide prime which are my favorite for what i shoot, Infrared landscapes. This lens works perfectly for infrared. The light tranmission is a stop and a third slower than most other lenses i use but i contributed that to the coatings and that i'm not using it for it's intended purpose. My sample doesn't perfectly match the focus scale to the infinity stop but this has no effect on the focus accuracy the scale just reads a bit off, no big deal i'm not goign to set my focus with a tape measure.Mounted on my FX camera this thing is ... MoreI hate to not give this lens 5 stars but it doesn't earn all 5. Though it is larger and heaviter it might replace my fisheye my previous favorite lens. I haven't compared sharpness between the two primarily because the fisheye cheats.I would give it half a star off because the distoration/softness on the corners was a bit more than i was expecting working with subjects other than nature (people). Again this is outside the intended use for this lens.

Lens had blueish purple flair issue
13 January 2022

The 14 mm lens I rented caused a blueish purple flair on images. I put on my other lenses I own to test and it was not an issue til I put back on the 14 mm. Please make sure I do NOT get this serial number lens for my rental at the end of this month and please test out what you give me before I pick it up as it is a commercial shoot in Dallas and I cannot have a problematic lens. Thank you!

An excellent improvement to the already sought after 15mm Ultrawide Rectilinear design. It is sharper at all apertures, has less flare issues when light hits the front element and is great for indoor architecture due to its Ultrawide Rectilinear design. The rectilinaer design greatly minimizes the distortion you get from standard wide angle or fishey lenses and saves you from having to free transform or "fix" in Photoshop. You can use Gel Filters on the back of the lens, but it is not necessary if you are shooting digital. This lens is meant to be used with a Nikon FX Digital or 35mm Camera. If you have a DX lens, get the Excellent 12-24mm instead. Some Full frame Canon users remove or cut the Diaphragm Adjusting Plate on the back and use an adapter for a superior 14mm wideangle. Others use this lens as a great Video or Movie lens on Nikon mount cameras or using a Cine mount adapter. If you come across one of these "converted" lenses that is missing the Diaphragm Adjusting Plate, it is an easy fix to get it back to normal. Order part number 1K 611-857 from Nikon (costs around $2.00) and replace the Diaphragm Adjusting Plate. Then run a few aperture tests to make sure you have set the plate properly for exposure control, if you care to do it yourself. Otherwise send it in to Nikon and they will replace it and calibrate it for a MUCH higher price. If you want SUPERIOR Ultrawide Glass and can afford it, get the twice as expensive 14 to 24mm FX Lens instead. It is a slight improvement in optical design over the 14mm 2.8, but be prepared to lug around a Large Heavy lens. I sold my 15mm 3.5 to upgrade to the 14mm 2.8 and I am extremely satisfied with this addition to my lens arsenal. The 14mm is one of the older lenses that has better dust seals, real f/stops and a solid , less-plastic build. It can be used with every Nikon camera made since the late 70s except for the consumer grade digitals that only use AF-S or AF- I lenses. There is no need to put this lens on any DX camera anyway, as it is overkill. Great Lens for FX Users!

Nikon AF Nikkor 14mm F2.8
3 January 2017

I have missed the older Nikon lenses for the mere fact they were more durable than these new expensive plastic lenses we have on the market today. I have the Nikon 14-24 F2.8 and it is back to the shop again for repairs. First it rolled off my bag and dropped less that a 30cm which caused barrel issues. The is second time is the aperture is sticking and one side of the focal plane is off. I am a working pro who does a ton of architecture photography and real estate. This lens is tack sharp and durable as hell! Great aspherical addition to your camera bag!

Sharp in center.
29 April 2018

This is a well built, professional lens that was one of the first ultra-wides available. The lens was in good mechanical conditions with clean optics. Although the center of the image is very sharp, I found that the image degraded rapidly about half way across the image with the corners being very dark when fully open. Stopping down to f/8 or more improved the edges somewhat, but they never came close to the center resolution.

lighter & more compact than 14-24mm, no AF-S to break
5 May 2021

Buying new, 14mm prime doesn't make sense to me as it is less flexible than 14-24mm zoom but more expensive or similar price. Getting a good used copy at half the price of a used 14-24mm is a different story. When I use the 14-24mm zoom, I often stick with the wide end anyway and 14mm is more portable. Occasionally, the extra flexibility of zoom is desirable. When I was at Lulworth Cove, Dorset last summer where there is little margin to move forward or backward. My mighty 17-35mm 2.8 was sadly not sufficient, wish I had the 14-24mm or even the Sigma 12-24mm. Now that I just bought the Sigma recently, might sell both the Nikon prime and zoom if image quality proves satisfactory.
