I bought this lens for portraits on my DX D7500 body. It really is the only good portrait option for a Nikon crop sensor body. On test shots I found the lens to be just a bit soft wide open. By 2.8, the lens is very sharp. I was hoping for better. The lens will likely work very well for me for portraits and certainly at higher f-stops for everything else, and I expect the lens to be a valuable part of my tool kit. The wide open sharpness seems about the same as the much cheeper 35mm f1.8. Again, I was hoping for better from a lens of this price point. Please note: I did pixel peep, and no-one but me is going to notice any issue, it is a very good quality match for the number of pixels on my D7500 DX sensor. The noise is kind of a Shhh sound like it is unlubricated plastic on plastic. Makes it feel a little cheep. Also not a show stopper as long as it doesn't get worse or cause some other problem over time.Overall, considering this is still a relatively inexpensive lens, It's a very good lens.

Overall this lens didn't meet my expectations. My assessments are all done on a focus calibrated D810. Wide open contrast is average and sharpness is below average, both improve quickly when stopping down. Focus is the biggest disappointment, it's a little slow but it's not accurate at all - it tends to back focus if the subject is closer than 3 meters. I've seen this behavior with other fast Nikon primes and I believe the reason has to do with bokeh characteristics and how the AF sensor judges when something is in focus - the bokeh transition on this lens is so gradual and smooth the AF sensor misses. Bokeh on this lens is really nice for portraits and would be a top reason to have it. Overall if you don't mind working with this lens to get great results then you ... MoreOverall this lens didn't meet my expectations. My assessments are all done on a focus calibrated D810. I own several 50mm 1.4 lens purchased over time and what makes this special is that I can get almost instant focus shots that are razor sharp! The pros: 1) Focus is internal so focus doesn't alter polarizing settings 2) I can grab the lens to change the focus easily if I want to. (The previous design 50mm f 1.4 AF-D required you to switch the ring to manual focus) 3) It has great bokeh is very good (as it is on previous 1.4 lenses) 4) Fast, accurate AF-S autofocus is giving me a lot more keeper shots that are sharp. 5) Great keep-on-camera lens for walking around. 6) Well thought out placement of controls make the lens feel like I have used it for years. I was very hesitant about this lens as I had read many mixed reviews on it, but I can safely say this lens has become one of my absolute favorites - and that's saying a lot as I have some of Nikon's and Sigma's finest glass they make (Nikon 24-70G, Nikon 85 1.8g, Sigma 70-200, etc). The one oddity I noticed with this lens when shooting it wide open (at 1.4) was that it did terribly on paper (calibration paper tests) but as soon as I started running test shots on people, specifically their eyes, it's TACK sharp. I can honestly say that I've not had a lens perform so poorly with the calibration chart but then blow me away with actual in-person tests! 100% crops I have no issues at all making out all the individual eyelash details (and then some). And the raw files that come out with this lens are to die for! Just love everything about this little guy.....oh and on that topic....this thing is so compact it's actually a joy to carry around, unlike some of my other 6 pound lenses. This is a lens that you will absolutely love after you give it some time and practice. One item of caution - it does have terrible chromatic aberration when wide open, but for the most part, that's fixable in post. Can't say enough good things about this lens. I've attached a landscape shot I took with it the other week.
Before you ask, yes, I DO own the f 1.2 manual lens. I used it on my beloved F4's, and YES, it is an excellent lens. BUT...The newer f 1.4 G with the Silent Wave Motor is FAST, SMOOTH, and ideal for street shooting from very bright to very dim light. The new lens has eight elements rather than seven and they are all encased in a NON-MOVING focus barrel. If you ever used a "D" series 50, you will appreciate what that gives a shooter focusing in a hurry, or tweaking the autofocus.I bought mine (like everything else) from Adorama during the ($) rebate. Total price ($) The f 1.2 AI-S manual lens is ($), has the same design as the first one made in 1981 and offers only 1/2 stop of extra light gathering. Should be a no-brainer to look closely at the G-series AF ... MoreBefore you ask, yes, I DO own the f 1.2 manual lens. I used it on my beloved F4's, and YES, it is an excellent lens. Should be a no-brainer to look closely at the G-series AF lens.It is NOT all joy in Muddville, however. The new lens uses 58mm filters instead of 52mm that we all have MANY copies of. Not sure why Nikon chose the larger size. One caveat about the deal from Adorama...The picture of the "bundle" shows a 3-filter set ( UV, PL, ND2)included with the lens. All I got was the UV. Not sure if this is an oversight or the picture of the bundle is incorrect. It certainly is NOT a dealbreaker, but if you EXPECT something from Adorama, they usually deliver. Unfortunately, not in this case.Final verdict: Exceptional lens for the money. Will become your camera's new best friend and improve your shooting by making you MOVE rather than ZOOM. MY D750 with this lens attached seems like a point and shoot when I use the 50 rather than the 70-200 f 2.8 AND it gives me FOUR times the ISO range over the zoom.Remember, Henry Cartier-Bresson, the "Godfather of Street Photography" used ONLY a 50mm lens for his entire portfolio of "everyday" photographs capturing the "decisive moment" in a scene.
I was nervous about buying a 50mm for my crop sensor Nikon d500 but I have had it for a few weeks now and have not taken it off my camera! Sure, I probably would be unhappy in a small room but all in all, it does a beautiful job! My other favorite lens is the 35mm f/1.8 so I wanted to give this 50mm with the f/1.4 a chance especially since the price of a prime lens is so nice. I did my first photoshoot with it and the pictures are absolutely fantastic! There was talk of the pictures being "soft" in some other reviews and I have not seen that. To the recent photoshoot (it was a family and maternity shoot), I brought other lenses along - the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8, Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8, and the Sigma 50-150mm f2.8. But I never took the 50mm off! I am very pleased.
Very disappointed in this lens. Also extremely disappointed that I just got an email saying a hood was missing! I never took a hood out and it should not be missing. I double and triple checked that package before returning. If this is a way to get $35 more from me after i did not get my equipment on Friday as scheduled and spending 2 hours tracking it down Saturday, I will not stand for it.
Checking photo gallery websites sites, you can still find this lens being used on high end current Nikon cameras, as well as the historical ones. From DSLRs (like D700) thru mirro-less bodies like Z6, Z7 - the output looks great across the spectrum. If you're on the fence about this one, just buy it. It's quite nice and holding its own against the third party manufacturers. I really appreciate the prompt service from BH Photo!

I went straight for f1.4 and there was just enough DOF to cover her face and her shirt and enough of her hair. The one thing I did notice is that I have some green fringing in some of the softer but not mushy areas like the hair and one shoulder and a little bit on the rock right behind her. I'm not worried about it. It's a forest shot but it is worth keeping an eye on. I've only had this out the once, but I really look forward to using it some more.
Pros: Very easy to use, access to the controls falls under my fingers. The eyepiece viewer is very clear and I like that it is placed on the left hand side not the centre. The camera is one of the most affordable. I am very pleased with the quality of the photos using the lens it is supplied with.Cons: While it feels solid it doesn't feel rugged. I will have to get a protective case.
