I'm not an expert so keep that in mind. More than likely I have no business owning this lens but having the best who I am.There's certainly a learning curve with this lens. Using it for a portrait session at f1.2 with studio lights is one example. I need to figure out of a need ND filter to reduce the light or I'm going to try strobes that will let me lower output to 1/512. Yes you'll need that to make it work...at least that is what I think.I find it interesting that some reviews ding it for weight and size. Get over it. That was not an issue for me. If it is too heavy for you, then get the f1.8 and with the money you save get a gym membership or get ready for assisted living.Lots to learn about taking the most advantage of the DOF. Just an incredible lens that provide the results you would expect from the Nikkor prime with an F 1.2 max aperture. Pairs nicely with my Z7ii with MD-N11 grip, along with a smallrig cage custom designed for the body and grip. My only gripe is with the size; (I thought my old 28-70 2.8D was large. But you should get use to it after several uses. I have kept this lens on my d7ii as the main lens over the 28-75 2.8.

This lens has helped me produce some stunning images. The optical quality paired with that razor thin DoF of f/1.2 has really brought my visions for shots to life. You will not be disappointed. From the moment I snapped it on my camera I was in love with it. I've shot a multitude of genre with it. All a pleasure. Though I will say, it being an older lens in the lineup, its focusing is a tad slower than the newer lenses. Not too slow, though. I have shot several live music events and have captured amazing action shots. If funds allow, any of the super fast primes will make a perfect addition to your kit.

This is in my opinion the best street photography lens I had.I have 50mm F/1.8 S as well. And I don't like super crispy sharp images from it.But this one due to F/1.2 S aperture is much much better as for me.F/1.8 S is much lighter and 4 times less expensive.Yes. It is big and heavy. But when people on the street see that you are making pictures of them on 1.2 S they are smiling to you when they see a huge lens. It's like WOW effect. Wow - it's a big heavy (and possibly expensive lens). Let's pose :)When people on the street see that you are making pictures of them on 1.8 S small lens - there is no any WOW effect :)It's like some ordinary guy with ordinary lens. Is he spying? :)
This was my first time renting from a business other than my local camera shop. (At my local shop, I can hold in my hands the lens I planned to rent and have confidence in what I was renting). My experience with Lensrentals was superb! The lens was received in a soft case placed inside a sturdy Pelican case, inside a shipping box. Also inside was a return label ready to go, and tape to re-seal the shipping box. I had to look hard to tell the lens wasn't brand new, and it performed flawlessly. Lensrentals is THE way to go.
I own the smaller and lighter Z 50mm f/1.8S lens. Prior to the arrival of the Z 50mm f/1.2S, it was the only native Z mount 50mm available. And quite frankly, the f/1.8S is perhaps the sharpest 50mm lens I've ever used on a camera over the 20 years or so I've been shooting with Nikon gear.At first I balked at the idea of the f/1.2 for two reasons. The price was one of them. While I have no qualms about purchasing lens that cost over US$2,000 (I own quite a few), the idea of a 50mm at this price seemed ridiculous. The second reason was the feedback from those who own this lens stating it's very large and very heavy. Again, I have other lenses that weigh more than the 50mm f/1.2. But they are zoom lenses that provide arguably greater versatility (e.g. Z 70-200 f/2.8S).However, as I read and followed a number of photographers who purchased the lens, including several who owned its smaller f/1.8S sibling, I finally succumbed to the self-imposed pressure and bought it. I can say without equivocation, I have no regrets.Certain lenses have a unique quality-a unique characteristic-that is heard to verbalize, but easy to demonstrate. Such is the case with the 50mm f/1.2S. Yes, it's light transmission is clearly greater than its sibling. I suspect this has to do with technical design issues such as the elements in the lens. It's autofocus is, in my view, noticeably faster than its sibling. Moreover, there is an optical quality that makes this lens stand out from its smaller sibling and several of the other Z mount lenses. My clients may never know that I am using a 50mm f/1.2S over another lens. But I know once I capture the image, it offers me something with just a little more of that special sauce, if you will, as I create images for clients. Can you do just fine without it? Of course you can. But if you are a demanding photographer with an affinity for the best of the 50mm focal range, I recommend this lens.
I held off buying the 50mm f/1.8 z-lens to wait for this one. i have used for years the most recent Nikon f-mount 50mm f/1.4. That lens has seen somewhat limited use due to being fairly soft and having no stabilization on my D-SLR bodies. This new 1.2 z lens is only slightly shorter than my 70-200, and it's heavy. It also dwarfs my Nikon f-mount 105 f/1.4--although less so when taking into account having to add the FTZ adapter to the 105.Optical performance is spectacular. Maximum in-body image stabilization with this native z-glass is fantastic. I had no trouble getting tack sharp results down to 1/5 second handheld. 1/5 second at f/1.2 equates to a setup that can practically see in the dark.Detailed side-by-side comparison reviews of this to the Z-mount 50mm ... The f/1.2 is slightly sharper toward the edges of the frame. As is true for most of the z-mount f/1.8 primes, they tend to be more useful than their f-mount f/1.4 counterparts, since they are all considerably sharper wide open AND get better in-body image stabilization. That is, a 1.8 z-lens is typically sharper wide open than a comparable f-mount 1.4 lens that is stopped down to f/1.8 or f/2.0. All that is to say that you have to really want the extra stop of light to pay 3x more for optical performance that is only ever so slightly better than the z-mount 50mm f/1.8. And you'll pay a price in weight and precious real estate in your camera bag if you pack this lens.My initial experience with this lens is very positive, and the image quality is spectacular--as it should be at this price.
I did a ton of research before purchasing this lens. Starting with the obvious, it is a big and heavy lens. It feels too big on my Z6II, but feels well balanced on my Z9. I like this lens a lot. I got it specifically for portraits and street photography, but I am finding I like it a lot for any subject I put in front of it. Not a usual application, but I shot a cityscape from the 21st floor of a building and absolutely everything was sharp. When shot at closer range at f/1.2 it melts the backgrounds and creates lovely separation for my subjects. It is a success on all counts and I highly recommend it (despite the weight, size, and cost).
My first 50mm was a Canon f1.8 paired with a 5D Mark 1. It quickly became my favorite lens because it was very sharp and rendered colors beautifully. When I made the jump from DSLR to mirrorless, I decided to go with the Nikon Z9. The first lens that was a must have for me was the Nikkor 50mm f1.2. The combination of the Nikon Z9 and the 50mm f1.2 is off the charts!!!The build quality is excellent and the balance with the Z9 is perfect. Yes, it is heavy but it feels like high quality equipment. The images this lens produces are stunning! I have captured everything from portraits to fashion to landscapes and the results are all outstanding! This is easily the best, sharpest and highest quality lens you can get, you won’t be disappointed.
My favorite prime lens is a 50 mm. Over the years I have owned three along with a close cousin, a Micro-Nikkor 55 mm f/3.5K. Good lenses all, but hands down the Z 50 mm f/1.2 S is tops. And not just tops among my 50s; it is far and away the best Nikkor I own.The Z 50 mm f/1.2 S quickly became my go-to lens. It is solid and it easily earned my trust to deliver what I ask it to. Coupled with a Z 7II, the 50/1.2 renders gorgeous colors, especially at ISO 64.In my experience as a stills photographer there is one knock on this lens: the control ring moves too freely to prevent unintended input. I set the control ring for ISO control (can also control aperture and exposure compensation) but, even trying consciously not to, I was constantly changing my original setting when hand-holding the lens. This became frustrating to the point I reset the control ring to have no function. However, videographers probably praise this easy movement because they can adjust aperture so very smoothly.
